Coach Nicole's Half Marathon Running Music

By , SparkPeople Blogger
I'm happy to say that even though it took a couple days, I am walking like a normal person again! Why was I ever NOT walking normally, you might ask? Well, because last Sunday I ran the Flying Pig half marathon (13.1 miles) in Cincinnati. I trained hard for this race and during every race, I set a goal and try my very hardest to reach it—I actually race myself and my past times!
That takes a lot out of my body and leaves me sore for a few days…and sometimes even during the race itself. But one thing I do to keep my energy boosted and my motivation high is to play some of my all-time favorite kick-butt running songs.
I don't normally make a playlist specifically for a race. Generally, I just shuffle through a generic "running" playlist I created. But this time, I needed the energy surge that only my favorite songs could provide.
So if you're looking for some of the best running songs to refresh your own workout playlist, look no further.

Sunday wasn't my day to meet a new PR, but I still ran a great race that I feel proud of. These tunes kept me going up all the hills and during all the times I felt so tired that I would rather walk or quit entirely. I hope you enjoy them, too!

Thanks for the playlist. I always love gathering new songs for my long runs.
I like Colyplay, Diddy (who I saw live), like Skylar Gray, Foo Foo Fighters, Florence + The Machine, Matchbox Twenty, The Offspring (my home boys). I also like Holywood Undead & Crazy Town! Report
My husband loves music, and he put a bunch of fast-paced songs on my shuffle for me. My favorites come from the New Pornographers first album. I find that when I get back to my house, if it's in the middle of a good song, I'll just keep running and go around the block again! Report
I love the idea of creating a specific playlist for a specific race. I'll be doing a 10-miler in late Sept (seriously a scary thought at this point) and I've been "trying out" different songs on my training runs/walks. Thanks for listing more options for me to try! Report
Try Love Shack by the B52s or Paradise by the Dashboard Lights by Meatloaf. They both accidentally got dumped in my running playlist but I love the, Report
I used to run with music, especially when I was just getting started and used the treadmill. But now that I'm always outside (haven't run on a treadmill since October!)... I just find it distracting. I need to be able to hear to stay aware of my surroundings -- cars, cyclists, other runners, and the occasional cat-callers -- to be safe, and to feel more in-tune with my body as well. Yeah, 2 hours is a long time to run in silence, but it just feels better to me now.

As an aside... I hoped so much to catch a glimpse of you at that race and tell you in person how much you've motivated me over the years, but I didn't. I have a feeling you were a couple corrals ahead of me! Sure was a great time, though... Report
Tom Petty's American Girl is my favorite get up and go song =) Report
My faves may change up depending on my mood, but right now, I'm loving Breathe Carolina - Blackout (cant leave an html link in the comments but it is on Amazon or iTunes)
David Guetta's mixes will keep you moving, that's for sure! Report
I did the MS 150 and, believe it or not, I was able to walk normally the next day. I drank my liquid amino acid drink after the ride each day. I had to a lot of stretching the following week because I still felt tight. I used 1/2 tsp of Bragg's liquid aminos in a tall cup of apple juice. Try it sometime. Report
