The Best Songs to Sweat to This Summer

Summer is in full swing, and if you're suffering from the heat wave that has been affecting so many regions, the thought of sweating through your workouts may be hard to bear. You can do a lot to stay cool in the summer heat (exercising in the shade, putting an ice pack in your sports bra or under your hat, and wearing moisture-wicking workout clothes), but you can only do so much to motivate yourself to get going. If you need help putting a pep in your step, start with your music. It makes such a difference in motivating you to get out the door and keeping your going!

There are so many great songs out right now that I'm having a hard time adding them to my own workout playlists fast enough. To make it easier for you, here are the sweet 16 songs I'm sweating to (and loving it) so far this summer.

(Links go to for mp3 purchases.)

Calvin Harris ft. Ne-Yo – Let's Go

David Guetta ft. Sia – Titanium (This is my jam! I listen to it on repeat during my runs.)

Ellie Goulding – Lights

Imagine Dragons – It's Time (only $0.25 on!)

Japandroids – The House That Heaven Built

The Killers – Runaways
(Starts off slow, but the chorus rocks.)

Linkin Park – Burn It Down

Maroon 5 – Payphone

Neon Trees – Everybody Talks (Everything on this album rocks.)

Owl City ft. Carly Rae Jepsen – Good Time

P!nk – Blow Me (One Last Kiss)

Pitbull – Back In Time

Rihanna – Where Have You Been

Train – Drive By

Usher - Scream

Walk The Moon – Anna Sun (currently a free download on!)

Thanks so much, Nicole. I've been working out to music for 30 years (I'm 58) and I always appreciate the strong beat (as in these songs) that keeps me moving. I hadn't heard of many of them but they'll be on my IPod today. - 7/22/2012   9:37:20 AM

I agree with PEACH1981 that I've not heard of any of these songs, but then I'm 62 and like real music that has lyrics you can understand rather than screaming. - 7/22/2012   3:42:21 AM
  • 29

I guess I am a minority--I do not use an iPod or anything else--I just work out, walk, run, whatever. I don't even like the loud music they play during the gym classes. - 7/21/2012   3:21:52 PM
  • 25
I must say these tunes are not of my age or culture group. But if you play some Irish Tunes. Then I'm down the trail and moving on.

I love Japandroids! Unfortunately, when I follow the link, it says it's $0.99 - not free. - 7/20/2012   12:37:04 PM

Hip hop, electro-pop, dance, and alt-pop tend to have the strong beats some folks look for when they're working out. I listen to everything, and this list covers just about everything for anyone. As for those that don't like any of these genres, keep an open mind - believe me, when I said I hated Taylor Swift five years ago, I didn't bet on having all of her music on my iPhone today. - 7/20/2012   9:33:18 AM

You're not alone, PEACH1981 -- I don't like current top 40 music either. I can't stand the sound of auto-tune, for one thing. But I hope these songs motivate lots of people, and I will make my own high-energy playlist with the types of music I prefer. - 7/20/2012   9:23:06 AM

Am I the only person who has never heard of any of these? There's just something about 21st century Top 40 that turns me right off. - 7/20/2012   9:12:35 AM

Great! Thanks for sharing. You've made it so easy to preview these songs and update our workout playlists. I usually listen to positive music during my runs. The lyrics do matter to me. My favorite is Let's Go. I like the music of Lights and Titanium seems to have ok lyrics but the music video is kind of disturbing. - 7/20/2012   9:09:43 AM

Okay, is it just me, or does anyone else prefer to listen to music with positive lyrics rather than these Kesha songs about partying? Seriously. Have you listened to the lyrics of some of these songs, like the Usher one, for example? Every time that song comes on the radio, I feel bad for listening to it and wonder how radio stations can even legally play the song. - 7/20/2012   9:06:51 AM
Wrong 16 songs for this 58-year-old. Exercise music doesn't have to be boring - yours is. Here are mine...You won't hear any of these songs on the radio, or MTV, VH1, CMT, BET, but it's better than ANYTHING you'll hear on those outlets...

    Mood Ring - Paul Torn
Everybody looks good at the starting line - Paul Thorn
Road Scholar - Lee Roy Parnell
South by Southwest - Lee Roy Parnell
Takes What it Takes - Lee Roy Parnell
Squeeze Me In - Lee Roy Parnell
Bull Mountain Bridge - Paul Thorn
Take My Love With You - Paul Thorn
Mission Temple Fireworks Stand - Paul Thorn
Take the Money - Brother Williams
    Big V8 - Brother Williams
Now and Then - Sleepy Joe Lee
    Bubba's Blues - Watermelon Slim
    Caterpillar Whine - Watermelon Slim
    Hey Mister - Stacie Collins
Carry Me Away - Stacie Collins
I won't Do Ya Like That - Stacie Collins
It Ain't Love - Stacie Collins
    Mind if I Smoke? - Todd Sharp - 7/20/2012   8:55:28 AM
