See More: news, soda, video,
A day or so ago, a friends shared a video on Facebook. The preview was a photo of bears. He has kids, and I have cats, so I didn't pay much attention. Then a co-worker sent around an email about the same video. That's when I took notice. Wow!

Have you seen the video about the real bears yet? I don't want to spoil the story, but this is a must-watch video (with over 1/2 million views as of Friday morning!) for anyone who's committed to a healthier lifestyle. Take a few minutes to check out the video and then let's discuss.

So what did you think? The video was created and shared by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Their position is clear: "It wasn't so bad when soft drinks were the occasional treat. But now sugary drinks are the number one source of calories in the American diet. With one third of America overweight and another third obese, it's a wonder anyone is still swallowing what the soda companies are selling."

More food (drink?) for thought:If you liked what you watched, be sure to spread the word!
What do you think about the video's message?

Do you drink soda, and if so, how often?

I never drink soda, eat chips or the other things touted for Type II diabetes and I hate being stereotyped as being a gluton for carbohydrates and sugary food. My carbs almost all come from veggies and fruits.Once in a while I'll have an open faced sandwich or a 1 inch potato. All the women in my family for generations have had diabetes and I've been no exception. Why doesn't anybody admit there are genetic factors and environmental factors as well as gluttony component? - 10/16/2012   12:35:02 PM

Powerful!!! Should put it on all tv channels and billboards etc.
    I rarely drink soda. - 10/16/2012   9:50:57 AM

I drink a can of diet soda 1-2 x a week. But I am not particularly virtuous since I do consume artificial sweeteners, and you may be familiar with the newest controversy brewing around THAT issue! It seems artificial sweeteners can prime the brain to stimulate you to eat MORE!
Fortunately (I HOPE), I am on a low-carb diet. Fat is a substantial part of that! So I am definitely getting the calories and hopefully the fat is "neutralizing" the artificial sweetener effect! - 10/15/2012   11:10:01 PM

Sugary drinks are not a problem for me, though it wouldn't hurt to cut down on diet coke either. I get way too much sugar from chocolate and cookies though. - 10/15/2012   1:56:03 PM

Yes, I know soda pop is seriously unhealthy, and I don't drink it except on really special occasions. But now I'm puzzled. The video tells us that sugary soda pop causes diabetes. Yet a Spark People quiz said that eating sugar is not a cause of type 2 diabetes. I need more and clearer information here. - 10/15/2012   1:36:36 PM

They needed a "I drink diet and only occasionally" button! I drink MAYBE 5 or so a MONTH and only diet. Except when I'm sick, then I drink diet Vernors medicinally.

I know a LOT of people who lost all their teeth. One person admits it was from the soda (diet!) and 2 who drink it like fish drink water and claim it was ONLY because they got pregnant... it has nothing to do with those 2 2-liters they drink every day!! - 10/15/2012   10:32:25 AM

Wow, what a effective video! I remember when it was a special treat to get to walk down to the soda shop. Then I started drinking gallons, then switched to diet, and then realized that I was nuts! Now sodas have become a special treat that I have to walk to get (a small one!) and enjoy on occasion! - 10/15/2012   8:50:20 AM

A very powerful video! I would love to recommend it to anybody. I stopped drinking soda, even diet soda long ago, and I don't miss it, not that bloated feeling. - 10/15/2012   3:29:35 AM

It saddens me to see the Coca Cola bears vilified in this video.

If the Center for Science in the Public Interest wants to go after sugary drinks, how about the energy drinks too? Monster and Rockstar are two that I'm aware of. In fact, how about canned orange juice or other fruit juices? Soda is just the low hanging fruit. - 10/14/2012   6:52:12 PM

I support taxation on anything unhealthy; tobacco, alcohol, sugar. Medical expenses and diseases as a result from imbibing are epidemic now. Education has not made enough of a dent in the behaviors so maybe taxation will? - 10/14/2012   1:02:52 PM

It's sugar not 'just' soda's if you ask me. And wheat products, too, as two slices of bread have the same effect on the body as two tablespoons of sugar, says Dr. Davis, author of 'Wheat Belly'.
I think that the fact that it's a cartoon and about bears not humans makes it easier for people to ignore the message. On the other hand, in old age fairy tales have often been used to educate people. So who knows. - 10/14/2012   12:32:09 PM

I use to drink 3 or 4 Mt Dew a day. On October 30 it will be one year since I have had one. I think I have had 3 sodas all year long and none in months. I add mio to my water and that is what I prefer now. - 10/14/2012   10:24:54 AM

A very powerful video. I am so glad I don't drink sugary drinks. My Mom is a diabetic and it frustrates her daily. - 10/14/2012   9:43:41 AM

I agree that too much sugar is bad, but the video makes it appear sugar is THE direct cause of diabetes, which is at odds with the SP quiz on diabetes. - 10/14/2012   9:17:29 AM

Well done!!! Made me a bit sad, but I was pleased with the ending and I think it sent the message! I don't know if taxes would help. I quit drinking soda in my teens because my dentist told me I'd lose all my teeth by the time I was 30 if I didn't. I never brought it into my home except maybe sometimes for a special occasion, but my children drink it anyway :( - 10/14/2012   8:40:16 AM

I thought that drinking diet sodas would be a good swap but I gained over 20 pounds I am now drinking 1 or less regular sodas and working out trying to get rid of that 20 pounds and any more that want to go with it - 10/14/2012   8:20:21 AM

This targets soda drinks, but the theme of the song is SUGAR. Seems to me we need to take a look at all unhealthy sugar consumption and the manufacturing of, not just soft drinks! - 10/14/2012   6:06:36 AM

very powerful. Cutesy but packs a punch. More people should see this!!!

In Richmond, where I grew up, there is a vote for a sugar tax. I hope it passes. I see lots of kids, as a sub, who are too fat to sit down on the floor, who can't play for long periods of time, who aren't used to running long distances because they don't have the energy. It is really sad. - 10/13/2012   11:09:52 PM

We don't drink sugar soda. But my husband and I drink diet all the time. I enjoy it. But as more information comes out about the harmful side effects of artificial sweeteners the more I am ramping up to quit. It's easier to change my mind than to change my bad habit. But it will be done. I think this is a compelling video, it's not just about soda, it's about sugar and unhealthy lifestyle in general. I think this is just the sort of thing our society needs. Yesterday my senses were assaulted by the discovery that 5 children's hospitals across America are starting a study on 200 teenagers to determine what the impact to the adolescent body and development bariatric surgery has. At first I thought it was a bad joke, but it's not. It's real and I can't believe it. I am horrified to think about the consiquences this will have on our teens if this becomes a common place thing. We don't need to surgery the fat off our kids, we need to teach them, we need to make good nutritious foods the normal again, and we need to make it EASY to find and buy the good foods and snacks. I think educational videos on the internet, on tv, and elsewhere is a really good way to start because we are a society that really responds to our media. Anyway, Bravo! to the makers of this video. It's honest, it's real, and it drives the point home in a very non threatening way. We need more of this. - 10/13/2012   6:35:39 PM

I quit drinking soda a year ago in late Nov. I think I've had it three times since then and it was in a rootbeer float my daughter and I shared, and a couple mixed drinks at a social gathering, otherwise I haven't touched it. I just drink water or iced tea instead and I haven't missed it at all. My kids only get it as a treat on occasion but it's far from a daily thing. Now just to wean my husband off it (diet but still not great for him). - 10/13/2012   6:10:22 PM

I dumped soda from my drink list a long time ago...and have an occasional small glass now and then...water and herbal tea (without cream or sweetener) has the top position! I know have been better off for it! - 10/13/2012   5:25:25 PM

    Good video!
Sort of reminds me of the early "Sesame Street" premise that information presented in the style of a commercial will catch the viewers' attention. I hope it works, because the youngest need all the help they can get! - 10/13/2012   4:48:12 PM

I love the honesty. Very entertaining way to present it. As an RN (35 years), I can tell you all the basic information is true and not really exaggerated. Using polar bears to present the message makes it a little easier to take. My daughter (35 yr old) loves this animation. I'm also pretty sure it will upset a lot of people. Oh well! It's on You Tube, and I hope it goes "viral" !!

Great Message.I do have a diet coke about every few months but such an empty source of nutrition for the body. I know too many people who live on sodas. I've facebooked this video and hope that everyone else spreads the word too.. - 10/13/2012   10:53:56 AM

I didn't think that taxation or banning soft drinks is going to have much effect. High taxes don't seem to have done much to regulate cigarette smoking. And of course diabetes isn't caused by drinking soda. But unthinking consumption of too much food and drink can definitely contribute to devastating health consequences.
And it's a good reminder that the goal of any company is to maximize the impact of that company's product, whether it is a cold soda or a fitness drink. They don't really have a corporate mission to spread happiness. Our happiness and well being is our personal responsibility. - 10/13/2012   9:41:40 AM

I don't drink sugared soda, but once or twice a week, I will have soda that is artificially sweetened. Dr. Oz's show this week would lead us to believe artificial sugar is just as bad as it leads to metabolic syndrome and prolongs our need for that sweet taste. I am going to try to substitute water for those sodas. No health concerns there! - 10/13/2012   8:28:52 AM

That is an amazing video. Pop is not the only source of sugar, of course, but it was symbolic of the message that pop likes to send. Drink me, I'll make the world sing, I make you dance in the streets - wouldn't you like to be a pepper too? I stopped drinking diet soda with the exception of once per week when we're out to eat. The rest of the time I drink water, and I have one cup of coffee per day. I feel a lot better without tons of artificial sweetener in my system. - 10/13/2012   8:03:32 AM

I enjoyed the video but I don't think you can blame soda drinking on diabetes. I do not drink soda but I still am diabetic. Being over weight and lack of exercise is what brings on diabetes and genetics also. My brother had his leg amputated recently. He did not drink soda, he was not overweight, but he was diabetic, and for years did not pay attention to his high blood sugar readings. Unfortunately, things are just not as simple as this video tries to demonstrate. - 10/13/2012   7:30:42 AM

Now that was entertaining as well as extremely informative !! Luckily, I decided to give up soda a few years ago. Prior to that, I was a horrible Diet Coke addict. That was the one good thing about my own soda habit, I drank diet instead of regular. still, I don't even want to think about what all that diet soda did to my body back then. - 10/13/2012   6:28:09 AM

My family doesn't drink sugar, and my step-daughter understands and appreciates why, but this is a good video to show her to help reinforce our decision. Adults may be dead-set in their ways, good or bad, but I've found that kids are a lot more susceptible and open to information. I know my step-daughter brings things we tell her to school, shares them with her friends and classmates, and in that way, influences them. - 10/13/2012   3:52:00 AM

This video is brilliant. I involuntarily cringed when the bear pulled out the insulin bottle.

I honestly believe that soda is a symbol of everything WRONG with this country's food system. The soda industry relies on and profits from genetically modified and government subsidized corn products. Soda companies privatize water supplies in this country and around the globe, preventing communities from having easy access to reliable sources of clean drinking water. And, of course, the high fructose sugar content of the drinks is directly tied to insulin resistance and diabetes.

How anyone can happily suck down soda every day is beyond me. - 10/12/2012   9:23:33 PM

I've given up sodas but, this is a very scary reminder of how these things go unchecked for so long. Just because they sell it doesn't mean it's good for you. - 10/12/2012   9:23:30 PM

I'm sorry, but videos like this don't impress or influence me. Until human beings start taking "responsibility" for their lives and health, attacking or focusing on a specific fast food or food company isn't going to make a difference. They are only providing what the majority of people are asking for and continue to pay for. If you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to get it. You have to WANT to stop by bad behavior/choice. Taxing certain foods isn't the answer either. Until PEOPLE stop buying and making better choices, the vendors are going to continue to make it. It's kinda like telling a kid NOT to do something. The more you focus on them to NOT do it, the more they're GOING to want and/or try do it. - 10/12/2012   8:56:40 PM
