Motivated to Move: Top 3 Quotes from 'Vanilla Sky'

By: , SparkPeople Blogger

Cameron Crowe’s 2001 film ”Vanilla Sky” is one of my all-time favorite movies. (No, it’s not because I’m head over heels for Tom Cruise.) It’s because the psychological thriller is full of twists, and it poses interesting philosophical questions for the characters and the viewers—questions about life, love and true happiness. But another reason I love the movie is because some of its lines really stick with me, long after the credits roll. This movie is one of many unexpected sources of motivational quotes that can apply to many things, including your own healthy lifestyle. Here are my favorites.

1. “Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.”

I love this quote and think of it often. How many times have you fallen off the wagon, only to continue stepping backwards instead of learning from your mistakes and moving on? (I’m raising my hand, too.) If it were easy to get back up and keep going, most of us wouldn’t struggle with our weight or with making exercise a habit. So when times are tough, I like to think about these words. There is no reason to wait until tomorrow, next week or next year to start over when you can turn it all around in a moment.

2. “Just remember, the sweet is never as sweet without the sour.”

How true! Applied to your own healthy lifestyle journey, these words hold a lot of weight. Sure you might be struggling to stay motivated when your weight loss plateaus for what feels like forever. But those low or “sour” points help you to appreciative of the highs or “sweet” rewards you’ll get in the end. The depth of human emotion really is amazing, isn’t it? If you think about it, we could never truly experience the joys of if we didn’t also know the pain of sadness and sorrow.

3. “Most of us live our whole lives…without any real adventure to call our own. What is any life without the pursuit of a dream?”

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut in your day-to-day life or even your fitness routine. But it’s only boring if you make it that way! Who says it can’t be more fun and adventurous? Who says you can’t run a marathon, climb a mountain or finally learn to snowboard? Those sound like pretty adventurous ways to reach a lifelong dream if you ask me. Remember that staying fit and healthy is one surefire way to help yourself reach any goal you might have.

I've never seen the movie, but now I DEFINITELY! want to. I love movies that have deep truths...thanks for sharing.

And, to BusbyBottom, your quote from Waterworld. "Why are you talking to me?" and how useful you've found it (when negative people are talking to you) - wow, that's great. Me thinks I'll "borrow" it and make use of it too! - 2/11/2009   1:52:23 PM

Thanks for the quotes... I didn't care for Vanilla Sky though.

My latest inspiration is from Urgent by Foreigner... the first few lines:
You're not shy, you get around
You wanna fly, don't want your feet on the ground
You stay up, you won't come down
You wanna live, you wanna move to the sound
Got fire, in your veins, burnin' hot, but you don't feel the pain
Your desire, is insane, you can't stop, until you do it again - 10/12/2008   4:11:59 PM

The band Rascal Flatts inspires me in many of their songs. Here's one:

    It Feels Like Today
    I Woke up this morning
With this feeling inside me that I can't explain
like a weight that I've carried
    Been carried away, away

But I know something is coming
I don't know what it is
But I know it's amazing, you save me
    My time is coming
And I'll find my way out of this longest drought...

It feels like today I know
It feels like today I'm sure
It's the one thing that's missin'
    The one thing I'm wishin'
    Life's sacred blessin' and then
    It feels like today
    Feels like today

You treat life like a picture
But it's not a moment thats frozen in time
    It's not gonna wait
Til you make up your mind, at all

So while this storm is breaking
While there's light at the end of the tunnel
    Keep running towards it
Releasing the pressure, that's my heartache
    Soon this dam will break

And it feels like today I know,
it feels like today, I'm sure
It's the one thing that's missin'
    The one thing you're wishin'
    Life's sacred blessin' and then,
    It feels like today

Feels like, feels like your life changes
Feels like, feels like your life changes

It's the one thing that's missin'
    The one thing you're wishin'
    Life's sacred blessin' and then,
    It feels like today

Feels like, feels like your life changes
Feels like, feels like your life changes

This song is both written and sung beautifully!

I've never seen "Vanilla Sky" because I'm not much of a movie person, but I might have to change that for this movie. Thanks for telling us about it. I love great quotes. I have a little notebook that I call my "I wish I had said that!" book. These quotes will fit in quite nicely. Thanks. - 10/12/2008   9:38:01 AM

I now also have to see the movie. I thought the movie with the female boxer from a couple years ago had a great quote as well, something about, "the only difference between winners and losers, is that winners never gave up..." Anyone have the exact quote?? - 10/11/2008   6:05:31 PM

I agree that we can get motivation from anything. I'm constantly amazed that whatever I happen to be reading for school often contains just the message I need to hear at the moment. It's cool how the universe works like that if you look for it and let it! - 10/11/2008   11:15:43 AM
