Sandra's Small Success of the Week

Getting up at 5:00 a.m. to exercise!

What's your overall goal? 

For weight, I am aiming to reach between 126-130 pounds. For non-scale goals, I want to be able to run/walk a 10K and to be and feel stronger overall. I also want to make my diet at least 80 percent whole foods. 
How is SparkPeople helping you get there? 

Keeping track of what I eat, my water intake and my exercises definitely helps me stay focused on my goals--but interacting with the community has been the biggest help. Reading other members' daily posts, seeing their victories or helping them get through their setbacks with a few words of encouragement really helps me keep going. 

What's your biggest challenge right now? 

I really want to eat more whole foods and less processed foods, but it can sometimes be difficult to do that, since where I live fresh food (especially produce) is expensive. 

What advice do you have for someone who just joined SparkPeople? 

Start small by tracking your regular eating to gauge where you need to improve. Don’t try to do everything all at once, or you’ll burn out and become frustrated. Definitely interact with other members by joining a team or doing a Spark Challenge.

Kudos to you. I know it is hard for many people to be committed to this so I admire those who can do it.
I get up at 4:00 everyday. (Use to be 3:00 before I retired) to get in my first workout. Exercise is my relaxation and enjoyment-it is my "Me" time. As I have gotten older I have altered my exercises to my body and have been able to maintain my weight between 105-110 pounds. The best thing I did was alter my thinking and lifestyle to fit eating healthy as a way of life. It has created so many positive change in many aspects of my life. Report

When children were young, I got up earlier than anyone to work out with the TV....Kept me sane. When I was working, hubby and I got up by 5 every morning so we could get to the gym by 5:40. I loved the classes and getting it done before 7 so I could shower and get to work by 8:30. After retirement, I got up by 6:15 and to the gym at 7 or 8. With COVID, I walk at 6:30 if it's hot, or 7:00 if it's not... Exercise keeps me positive and healthy!

5 am to do exercises, good for you, I hope this sets up a "forever" mentality in you that exercise is so worth it!! I remember doing that at your age, and I am so NOT a morning person, but it was the only time guaranteed to be available all the time given work and babies. Since then, whenever I am not motivated to exercise, I remember those years and how much better I felt after exercising, both physically and mentally. I think exercise kept me sane and hopefully a good person to be around. Keep yourself exercising!! Report

I remember doing exercises at 5 am back when ESPN had exercise shows on tv, one show after another. Was sort of fun, until the kids came. Good luck! Report
