See More: recipes, SparkRecipes,
Thanks to all those who entered the SparkRecipes Un-Chained Recipe Contest. The contest ended on Monday night, but the fun is just beginning!

We had more than 40 entries, from fast food and casual restaurants. Fast food breakfast meals and casual dining salad monstrosities were among the more popular foods to be made over. We can't wait to get started and try these dishes.

But first, we need your help.

Much of my day has been spent going through each recipe and starting to choose semi-finalists. With so many great entries, it's a tough job!

While the SparkPeople team will make the final decision on the winners, we need you to aid us in our mission by voting on the ones you like. All you have to do is head over to SparkRecipes and rate the recipes. (Use this link to see all the entries.) You have until Nov. 13 to vote.

Usually, we request that you make recipes before rating them on SparkRecipes. This time, we know you don't have time to try them all. Read through them, and decide which ones look best. Vote as one--or more. (If you do try them, let us know!) Did they capture the essence of the original recipe? Leave out a key ingredient? Forget a step in the directions or include an ingredient you can't find near you? Let us (and them) know in the comments. Be nice, but be honest.

The 10 semifinalists will get $25 to spend on SparkPeople merchandise in the SparkPeoplestore. Two lucky winners (one each in fast food and casual dining) will get a Vita-Mix 5200 blender, worth $450.

Thanks for helping us choose the winners of the SparkRecipes Un-Chained Recipe Contest. We've had plenty of fun planning and executing this contest, and we'd like to sponsor more contests in the future. SparkPeople employees can't enter or win (our prize is working here), so we'd like to hear from you: What types of recipe contests would you like to see on SparkRecipes and the dailySpark? What could we do to improve the contests? What prizes would you like to win?

Good luck to everyone who entered! I don't have the gift of creating them, but with directions, I can make them well! - 11/10/2009   9:19:34 AM

I did vote for all of them, I sorted the recipes alphabetically then went down the list. My fave being the red pepper shrimp pasta which is all around a very healthy meal. I did notice those further down the list had hardly any votes seems kinda unfair. Best way is to be able to look at every recipe. and sort alphabetically i think - 11/6/2009   5:55:51 PM

Has anyone noticed the further down on the page the recipe is that there are less votes???

Also, this has always been a pet peeve of mine......if you are going to alter someone's recipe.....do not give them a bad rating. That only makes sense, right??? - 11/5/2009   1:59:34 PM

I didn't know you had extended the entry deadline! Crud!!!

If I upload my recipe now (it's good and I would rather share it and maybe have someone love and enjoy it), will it be able to "count" for the next contest (should you have one)?

I know the rules said it needed to be new and not posted previously . . . - 11/5/2009   9:50:17 AM

Why are some recipes with great reviews showing up as BAD or NO RATING? I would hate to think someone wouldn't look at the recipe because what's showing on the list page is incorrect. Those Pancakes are going to be the first of these recipes that I try!!!! - 11/4/2009   4:01:14 PM

How about a healthy Christmas cookie or goodie recipe contest? - 11/4/2009   3:04:42 PM

A great contest for my family would be to make over the prepackaged food you buy at the store! Like hamburger helper, frozen pizza or mac and cheese!! I try to get my family to eat healthy but my husband can't live without pizza!!!! - 11/4/2009   2:03:09 PM

Unfortunately I missed the contest and cannot vote at this time, but in the future I will make sure I am aware and have some imput into the contest. I have been enjoying many of SparkPeople's healthy reciepes and would have enjoyed being a part of this contest. - 11/4/2009   1:55:30 PM

You can still vote! Not to worry. We're not basing our decision on the number of ratings a recipe receives. :) - 11/4/2009   11:26:36 AM

Voting is over, so I missed this one. Ahhh well... Next time, maybe.
I would choose tose with the lesser salt and or those with less Cholesterol.
This is my main 2 concerns for my health right now, besides quittin smoking, which I am doing now. Woo whooo for me... :) I'm on my 4th day as of today. YIPPEE!!! :) Watching a diet and quitting smoking at once is difficult, I'm getting there though. - 11/4/2009   11:23:21 AM

since I starting wtih SP and am watching way more than just calories. I just can't eat out. especially fast food. way to much sodium for me. - 11/4/2009   9:35:03 AM
  • 19
See, this is why I stopped going out to eat! When I started using the SP tracker and tracked my "healthy restaurant meals" I was shocked and ticked off at the restaurants for all the hidden sodium and fat. Most of these healthier versions of restaurant meals are still too high in sodium for me. I miss the salty, savory dishes, but I just won't eat them anymore. - 11/4/2009   9:19:55 AM

I think it is great that you had a recipe contest and agree that more in the future would be quite fun!

A couple ideas for recipe contests are maybe getting something seasonal going, like choose one or two foods that are staples during a certain season and then having people submit recipes based on those things. Another is to submit recipes based upon a food or product that was featured in an article here on SparkPeople. Also, you could do recipe make-overs for people's favorite fast food places that have been rated here on SparkPeople for their healthiest options.

One other thought: I am a vegetarian, so it is very hard for me to rate all of the recipes under this contest. I really wish I could could but cannot eat most of them! Maybe have a vegetarian contest one time so that all can enjoy :)

Good luck to all who submitted a recipe! :) - 11/4/2009   7:57:25 AM

I rated EVERY entry so nobody was left out. I do wish there was a way to lower the sodium still because it is so high in so many of them and that is a huge concern today. Maybe that can be addressed in some article how to not have so much sodium in making our own recipes. NO-SALT, or KOSHER Salt etc. - 11/4/2009   7:34:40 AM

These recipes sound great! I think my fav would be Chicken and Dumplings, which I'll be trying for sure! - 11/4/2009   7:14:26 AM

I also have another question: I noticed on some recipes that people are commenting on them with positive words but giving zero stars because I assume they don't know how to give a star rating. Because of this, some dishes are showing a low star rating.

Any ideas how to fix this? - 11/4/2009   7:12:27 AM

These are great - Wonder how long it will take me to try them all! I agree with Jas127 regarding 5 ingredient dishes . . . when it looks as if all my time will be spent getting ingredients together - I sadly move on -!!!!!!! Thanks, Meri - 11/4/2009   6:18:05 AM

Liked the recipes! They all look good. My only complaint is I could never find an entry form or place to enter a recipe! But, several times here I have run into problems and regardless, it is still the best site around and my continued loyalty. - 11/4/2009   1:22:49 AM

    I'm excited!

But, for some reason on the list that the link takes you to the list shows that my recipe (Cruchwrap Supreme) has no votes, but when you click on it, it has 4.5/5 stars.

I really hope you do this again. I had a lot of fun with it. How about a contest where we make over a processed, packaged food (think Hamburger Helper, salad dressing, canned soups, Twinkies, etc) into a healthy version using nothing but real, natural ingredients instead of the chemicals that are in most foods found in the supermarket today?

Also, I sure could use one of those fancy Kitchenaid stand mixers.....

Please check out my recipes! Sesame Chicken and Tempeh Mexican Pizza. - 11/3/2009   7:22:41 PM

I would love to see 30-minute (or less) super-nutritious recipes; and slow-cooker recipes that DON'T use canned soup or packaged food with lots of chemicals and sodium; one-pot dishes that get in two or more servings of veggies in a serving...these are recipes I would love to see.

I think your prizes are great - I LOVE my Vita-Mix. Fitness stuff, anything to help live a healthier happier life...

I look forward to checking out the recipes! - 11/3/2009   6:54:58 PM

awww, man. I'm leaving for vacation (out of the country) and won't have the opportunity to try them all. I'll definately put them on my to do list for when I return. Green beans are my fav veggie, they automatically get my vote!

best of luck to all the contestants - 11/3/2009   3:27:18 PM
