See More: recipes,
Today is Eggnog Day! Creamy, sweet and delicious, homemade eggnog is a real treat at the holidays. Spiked with a dash of rum or whiskey, it's a cocktail and dessert rolled into one. Unfortunately but not shockingly, eggnog is also pretty high in fat and calories. After all, it is essentially a rich custard mixed with whole milk and egg whites.

Cook with skim milk instead of whole or 2% milk. Your nog will be just as creamy, and you’ll save up to 70 calories.

Lactose intolerant? Swap rice or soy milk for the regular milk. The nog won't be as creamy, but it will still be delicious.

Traditional eggnog has 226 calories and 13 g fat. Serving size=3/4 cup (6 ounces or about the size of a hockey puck)

These eggnog recipes have fewer than 100 calories per serving.

Find more healthy desserts and sides here.

Eggnog or egg not? What do you think? Are you an eggnog fan? My boyfriend, Fred, is a HUGE fan and makes the creamy stuff for every party we throw. I'm not a milk drinker, so I buy the Silk brand nog.

I love it but its very thick and rich I take 1/4 cup and add 3/4 cup of skim milk and have it for 2 servings that way I get the flavor and not so many cal......no whiskey either....it's a treat I have only twice during the holiday season and I love it.

I absolutely love Eggnog... and I love the eggnog creamer you can get this time of year even better, because it gives you the taste, without as much calories! It's actually the only time of year I drink coffee... during the winter season I brew decaf coffee a lot and use a little eggnog creamer to flavor it and that way I get to enjoy the flavor without nearly as many calories as if I was drinking the real thing! Yummo!!! - 12/28/2008   2:44:45 AM

I used to love egg nog. Since I've started noticing the tastes of food more, eggnog doesn't send me as much. Now chocolate, that's another story! - 12/27/2008   11:07:17 PM

The last thing on earth I would ever drink! I am a purist: Give me a hot cup of tea any day!!! I love eggs and milk, vanilla, but will chill my milk, cook my eggs,,, you all can have my share of it. - 12/27/2008   1:19:53 PM

Easy to pass the Egg Nog. I haven't had it in YEARS. Wish chocolate was that easy... - 12/27/2008   11:41:43 AM

I don't like eggnog at all. I just don't see what the fuss is about. Maybe that is a blessing! - 12/26/2008   11:46:47 PM

I love eggnog but haven't had any this season. I prefer the full-calorie version at the store so just avoid it. The light version at the store just doesn't do the "trick." I am interested in trying some of the SP recipes, though. Not long ago, there was a recipe that required some cooking and I think this may be the best one for me to try. Perhaps New Years Eve will be the time I'll try this. I won't skimp beyond that, though. I'll put a real shot of brandy in it. Yum! Sometimes we have to celebrate. - 12/26/2008   9:17:19 PM

I LOVE eggnog. I have made it from scratch and have also tried the lowfat varieties available in the supermarkets. Love to bake with it too - 'cause I'm the only one who drinks it in my house. Have a favorite eggnog muffin recipe that is terrific. Will have to try SisterDoe's Eggnog Cookie recipe as it also sounds very yummy. - 12/26/2008   12:12:42 PM

Ha! I'm not really sure what I had! When I looked in my moms fridge, I think she had bought a carton of regular, carton of soy light, and a carton of regular light and mixed them all! I had a serving. It was pretty good without being the sickening sweet stuff I have had before. Kudos, mom! - 12/26/2008   6:54:19 AM

I love Silk Nog. I think it tastes great and it has less calories and fat than eggnog. It still should be used sparingly but is a great way to enjoy a holiday treat - 12/26/2008   12:09:40 AM

I've been having heated rice milk with cinnamon and a touch of vanilla extract- it feels tasty & festivive. I love eggnog, but since I'm flying solo, I haven't felt like buying a whole thing of it just for me.
I do buy Horchata now and then--- total yum. - 12/26/2008   12:04:22 AM

There's some Christmas treats that I'm having small amounts of, and my homemade eggnog is one. No light substitutes, just a little of the real thing. - 12/25/2008   11:11:14 PM

I buy Hood's lite egg nog, pour about 1/2 cup in a glass, then add skim milk. (About 3/4 to 1 cup) Tastes just as good with less calories! - 12/25/2008   6:04:23 PM

I have always liked eggnog...I used to get the Bordens Eggnog in the can that can last for awhile and even used it in recipes like bread pudding. That was long ago. Now I am aware of calories and fat so I don't do it now. Sometimes I get the quart size as a treat...Silk makes a nice soy egg nog. - 12/25/2008   2:37:56 PM

I've never made it through a serving of it. It just doesn't appeal to me. (another thing...why do they always seem to show it served in a cup that holds atleast 3 servings?) - 12/25/2008   12:46:39 PM

I have a dairy allergy and was so thrilled to find the Silk brand soy eggnog. I just have to be sure to limit buying it to 1 or 2 times during the season. - 12/25/2008   10:39:39 AM

I LOVE eggnog but don't like the fat and calories, so I have been buying Silk brand Soy Nog. It is DELICIOUS (and good for you!) without all the guilt! My husband loves it, too. I wish it were available all year long. Silk used to have a spiced single serve soy drink out as well, but I haven't been able to find it any where recently and I haven't seen it in their product list. - 12/25/2008   2:39:56 AM

I love eggnog too much. It is hard for me to control so I have only had one cup of it all season long. That's pretty good for me. I will keep in mind the tips above for lowering the fat and maylbe make it next year. - 12/25/2008   1:25:09 AM

Eggnog is a "trigger" food for me. I love it so much, I just can't make myself have a small portion. So, I choose to consume a different treat, one I do have control over. - 12/24/2008   10:43:19 PM

I love egg nog at this time of year, but I haven't hade any because of all the colories and fat. So ith the recepies we can have egg nog but with less calories. We still would have it but just not as much - 12/24/2008   3:06:32 PM

My holiday nemesis is eggnog lattes at Starbucks! Urrrrrrrrrrg! I have them use nonfat milk but still should be more of a treat than a daily staple... - 12/24/2008   2:46:18 PM

So far, I have just taken a sip of my husbands. It's so rich. I like it if I water it down with milk. Homemade sounds interesting! - 12/24/2008   2:16:24 PM

Love it. I have avoided buying it for the last couple of years. Favorite is the Swiss Valley Nog & have only found one local store that carries it. Good thing that store is on the other side of town. Will probably try to make it in '09, at least then my weight will be closer to where I want it. To those of you who get some this year, enjoy. Merry Christmas. - 12/24/2008   1:29:06 PM

I'm not a fan either. t's always tasted kind of bland to me. I can understand why people would want to spike it. But I don't drink, so that isn't an option for me. Just as well. I didn't realize how bad it could be for me. - 12/24/2008   12:14:24 PM

I'm so glad that I do not like egg nog and it's just one more temptation I don't have to worry about! - 12/24/2008   12:08:09 PM

i love the real thing SO MUCH....and have avoided buying it at the store all week. If i can only hold out until after the first, that will be a really good thing! first sip can easily turn into my drinking the entire container....it is one of the few things I have no self control with at all.
I do have a wonderful way of making it less calorieful for large crouds, mix eggnog with diet ginger ale for a great holiday punch. - 12/24/2008   12:05:03 PM

Eggnog is definitely my favorite Christmas drink. I have planned to make some homemade today. But for the taste without the calories I got some Green Mountain Eggnog flavored coffee. Really strong taste (my husband even finds it too strong and prefers to brew a mix with regular coffee) that does the trick without the guilt.

    HAPPY EGGNOG DAY EVERYONE! ♥ - 12/24/2008   12:03:59 PM

Love the eggnog! Lots of nutmeg!

Maybe we should put an Obesity Tax on the Nog.

Oh yeah, there is one. It's sitting on my hips. - 12/24/2008   11:27:06 AM
