Nothing brings you out of a good night's sleep quicker than leg cramps. Although the exact cause is unknown, research has linked these muscle pains to excessive phosphorus and a lack of calcium and potassium in the diet. If you are experiencing leg cramps you may want to try the following suggestions:
- Limit soda to one can a day or less.
- Include 3 - 4 servings of milk or dairy products each day.
- Consume fruits and vegetables that are high in potassium, such as bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, oranges, and peaches.
- Limit processed foods such as lunchmeats, hot dogs, ham, and bacon. They're high in sodium.
- Do not stand for long periods of time.
- Rest on your side as often as possible.
- Gently stretch the calf muscle. Flex your foot by pointing your toe toward your knee.
- You may also add a heating pad on the cramped area, but do not use it for longer than 15 minutes at a time.
