How to Organize a Baby Shower

Tips and Tricks

To add a fun aspect to your party, ask each guest to bring a baby photo of herself to the party. Attach the photos to a bulletin board, assigning each photo a number. Then give each guest a piece of paper and a pencil and let them guess which photo belongs to which guest. Have them drop their papers into a basket. After gifts are opened, announce the person who guessed the most correct baby photos as the winner. If you'll be playing games, you can use the table centerpiece for a prize, or plan to purchase a few small gift items such as a manicure set, a pampering bath basket, or some fragrant candles to give to game winners.

Choosing the Gifts - New Moms

If the guest of honor is pregnant with her first child, she will more than likely have registered for baby items in advance. This makes gift giving simple for guests.

As a fun twist, you might have each guest purchase gifts for baby that revolve around a theme. Some examples might be to have one guest bring gifts around a "bath time" theme, while another chooses a "meal time" theme and yet another might choose a "play time" theme. Suggest guests use creative containers to hold the assortment of gifts they purchase, such as a baby bath tub, a diaper bag or a small toy chest. They could wrap the gifts in cloth diapers, or just use pretty baskets that mom can later use to transport items from room to room at home.

Don't forget that when a new baby enters the picture, it's often hard to plan meals around a new schedule. Casserole showers are a fun way to exchange recipes and stock the expectant parents' freezer for those first few difficult months. Before you host a casserole shower, be sure that there is a second freezer available, or that the present freezer has plenty of room to spare. Another option if you're hosting a large gathering is to have several guests chip in together and buy the new parents a second freezer for their basement or garage.

Choosing the Gifts - Experienced Moms

If the mom-to-be already has children, she probably has most of the baby items she needs, with a possible few exceptions, such as if she already has a son and she is expecting a daughter. In this instance, she may want to register for baby girl items such as feminine bed linens, diapers for girls, hair and other baby girl accessories, new bedroom decor and clothing. Anything the new mom needs for her baby daughter will be appreciated of course, and let the new mom and her registry be your guide.
