Healthier Ways to Think Outside the Basket

Vegetables aren’t the only thing your little bunnies should be eating this Easter! Dried fruit is a great way to meet your daily fruit quota. For ease, purchase it at the store, but be sure to read ingredients labels and avoid items with added sugar. You can also use a dehydrator at home to make your own dried fruit. Try apricots, mangos, apples, banana slices, cherries, and pear slices. When you dry your fruit at home, you don’t have to add any sugar and it tastes great! It can also be a fun project for kids to do with you.

Hop to Health
Who says an Easter basket should only contain edible surprises? You can include creative items that promote movement and aerobic activity, too. A jump rope packs easily into a grass-filled basket and can be used year-round. Hop to heart health with this great calorie burning, muscle-building, and fun activity. Get a rope long enough and three or four people can partake, double-dutch style.

Rev up a game of hopscotch outside by packing a box of sidewalk chalk into your child's basket. It’s a simple way to get them outside and active, and to teach them to play games without cords and controllers. Enrich their minds and bodies with this idea! In addition, don't forget about balls, which are inexpensive and can entice kids of all ages to play outdoors.

Brain Treats
Books are a great non-food gift for a loved one of any age. Slip the latest tween fiction series, a copy of the traditional Easter Bunny tales, or the most recent non-fiction best seller.

Other ways to pop some fun into your gifts baskets are to add playing cards and a small book of card games. This addition can provide good old-fashioned family fun. Small and portable travel games are always useful, as are packets of crossword or math puzzles. Pair these gifts with sets of colored pens or pencils and it’ll be a sure hit.

Reach your 10,000 Steps
Increase your activity on Easter morning and help your family reach the recommended goal of 10,000 steps a day by encouraging additional activity to help offset some of the candy and sweets you'll be eating. Hide your healthy Easter baskets in a discrete spot in the house or yard and put together a scavenger hunt to lead your kids and friends to them with multiple clues and stops. At each station, leave a physical activity assignment (have your scavengers perform jumping jacks, frog leaps, push-ups or other silly tasks) along with the clue for the next location on the hunt. Make sure to follow the group around as they search to help get your steps in, too!

Enjoy your sweet treats in moderation and get creative to include some healthier items in your celebration! Encouraging your children, friends and family members to find alternate ways to celebrate Easter that don't always involve candy can keep your traditions alive and set a positive example for health living.   • Fruits and Vegetables? You force feed that into your kid all year. Easter is once a year and so let them have a little candy. I bet you treat yourself sometimes too. And feeding them sugar free stuff? Seriously? You know that's dangerous; right?

  • Great article! But I dont have any kids to make baskets for. The only kid who gets one is ME (BIGGG kid.) And it is from family and usually filled with chocolates and sugar peeps. I am going to resist it and bring it to my work. Will try to eat fruit only at brunch for desert-wish me luck-I'm on day 5 of my restart!   • My grandkids are spoiled and will crab if they get anything healthy, then for the rest of the day they'll act like they're victims of the most horrible oppression, because they got cheated out of the candy they supposedly were owed, just for being kids. Can't fool them by making healthy food look good.

    Years ago a little before Easter I was on a job where someone hid plastic eggs all over for the employees to find, and inside each one was a note saying to take it to the office for something like a cash prize or paid day off. Before long the job was essentially shut down because everyone was hunting for eggs. The problem was the office didn't know anything about it. And they weren't very happy about it.   • Dollar Tree has pedometers and I agree that they would be great for older children. I have one and they are quite accurate. My son is only 20mnth, so he'll be getting his favorite healthy snacks in new snack size reusuable containers & some other Dollar Tree items...a new set of kids size ishes, some learning flashcards, a coloring book and colors, bath toys and a little bit of candy. - 3/27/2013 1:08:49 PM

  • When they were little my kids used to get a DVD of their favorite cartoon, a new toothbrush, little Easter toys, and plastic Easter eggs with coins in them. Much more fun than boiled eggs and carrots (seriously??) - 3/26/2013 10:43:52 PM
  • How about putting a pedometer in each basket ? That way when you are trying to encourage 10,000 steps a day , they can see their progress . I also think a bag of baby carrots can be incorporated into an easter basket ( maybe with a couple Hidden Valley Ranch packets ) - 3/26/2013 8:07:30 PM

  • We color code the eggs so an older child can only find the blue eggs which are hidden more stealth than the yellow eggs which are for a younger child. Then I often leave notes like "go look in the hallway closet for a surprise!" Then I will hide new flip flops or a jump rope - something that was too large for a plastic egg. This has kept my older kids continuing look for eggs with ther younger siblings since their prizes are age appropriate. (Like an iTunes giftcard). - 3/26/2013 2:22:43 PM

  • Since it's Spring, we started the habit of giving our kids a plant for Easter. One year it was one of those eggs where grass grows from it. One year it was a pepper seeds they could grow during the fall another year it was bulbs in bloom then planted in the fall to have every year. - 3/26/2013 10:27:17 AM
