Good afternoon, SparkPeople!
I hope you are enjoying this spring weather as much as we are here in Cincinnati! I love the changing seasons because it always inspires me to change lots of things in life: my wardrobe, my attitude and even my workouts.
If you're looking to change up your exercise routine, I've got some great news for you! Read More ›
Short on time but still want to squeeze in a good sweat session? You're not alone. "Lack of time" is the No. 1 reason people cite for not exercising regularly. It's easy to think that if you don't have an hour or more to dedicate to exercise, then what's the point. But quite honestly, short workouts really do have a big impact on your health and your workout—and that is especially true when you do the right types of workouts.
When you need an efficient workout to make the most of your time, that's where smart training techniques like interval training, circuit training and multi-joint exercises come in. All of these approaches help people get better results even when they're short on time.
I've put together a workout that combines all three of those fitness techniques in an 18-minute workout that'll give you a cardio boost and a head-to-toe strength training workout in one. And while that might sound ultra-intense, it's appropriate even for beginners. Read More ›
I'm excited to share some news that we've been keeping under wraps for months: This January, Walmart stores across the country are stocking SparkPeople's critically acclaimed 28 Day Boot Camp workout DVD at an everyday low price! You'll find it in the fitness section of the store (not with other media and DVDs). This is a major highlight for me personally, and another great milestone for SparkPeople since so many more people will be exposed to our healthy and sane approach to fitness and weight loss thanks to this. To celebrate, we're offering a great deal to people who purchase the DVD at a Walmart store! Read More ›
Twice the workouts. Two times the fun. Double the results? You be the judge!
Positive reviews continue to roll in for our workout DVDs Total Body Sculpting and 28 Day Boot Camp. (Thank you for that!) Although both of these DVDs feature very different workouts, I designed both of them with one thing in common: to help you maximize your results by combining compound exercises that work multiple muscle groups with calorie-blasting cardio into a single, super-efficient workout . (Phew, that was a mouthful.) And because each DVD has three or four individual workouts that you can mix and match, each one comes with its own workout plan that you can follow to ensure you're using them to get the best results in a safe and progressive way.
But one of the questions I hear most from people following one or both of these DVDs is how to use them together. This is a great question without a simple answer. The best workout plan will work your body in a variety of ways, include both challenging and easier days, and also allow for rest and recovery so you can get stronger and fitter (and stay sane). So I developed a new workout plan that combines the routines from both of our popular DVDs into an effective and easy-to-follow program.
If you have both of these DVDs, you are in luck! Start using this plan now and reap the results! If you have only one of these DVDs, then consider this a kick in the butt to finally go out and get the second title you've been missing. (Here's where to purchase Total Body Sculpting or 28 Day Boot Camp). With a brand new plan to follow, you'll be well on your way to your fittest self yet—just in time for summer. Are you ready for the plan? Read More ›
Some of you know my story by now. I once yo-yoed from extreme weight loss to major weight gain for years, and eventually settled in to what I call my "happy" weight, a figure that I'm able to maintain with a healthy attitude toward food and exercise—one that includes rest days and hard days and healthy days and even ice cream dinners.
I exercise because it feels good and keeps me healthy, and what you see when you look at me is the direct result of how much I exercise (or don't) and what I eat. I'm happy with my approach to both: no obsession, no deprivation, no self-punishment.
As a trainer, I try to deliver the same healthy, balanced approach to students in my classes and followers of my workout videos, whether you have a lot of weight to lose or simply want to exercise regularly for the benefits it provides. I don't look ripped. I don't have a six pack or bulging muscles. In the fitness world, what I represent usually isn't very marketable. Fitness trainers have to look the part (buff) and deliver the goods (workouts that make you beg for mercy) to make it in this world. I'm not (and don't do) any of those things.
But for one day, yours truly, an unassuming trainer from Ohio who was once told that she didn't look toned enough to have a fitness DVD, had an exceptional moment. Read More ›
When SparkPeople approached me about creating the 28 Day Boot Camp DVD you’ve been hearing so much about lately, I was excited of course! I love creating workouts (with you in mind!) and shooting videos for the SparkPeople.com. It’s one of the highlights of my job and such and enjoyable experience. When you work so hard on a project like this, you fall in love with it and you hope that others will love it, too. How couldn’t they? Don’t they know how much time and effort was involved and that you think it’s great?
Well, unfortunately I’ve learned that not everyone will love what you do, and some can be really negative and hurtful in their comments. When we released one of SparkPeople’s first DVDs, some people went out of their way to criticize me (not my workouts, but my appearance). And then of course I’ve seen countless comments on our YouTube workouts doing the same over the years.
28 Day Boot Camp is our biggest DVD to date—professionally produced (I got the real star treatment!), widely distributed in stores nationwide, and sent out to countless writers, reporters and bloggers in hopes they’ll write about it for the masses. It’s reaching so many more people that I’ve been bracing myself for more harsh reviews since day one of this project. I would second guess everything during the process—the exercises, my cueing, what I wore—just thinking about all the things others could find “wrong” with it. Two things really saved me from going crazy as I anticipated what others might think about the DVD (and me):
- I reminded myself that my intentions were good and pure. I was trying to help people and spread a positive and healthy message. Some people may find fault in the way it was executed, but I shouldn’t let it get to me because I did the best I could. I suppose I’d rather get some backlash by putting myself out there and going for it than never try for fear of how I might be perceived.
- I remembered the quote a member shared with me years ago that I still remember today: “If someone else has a problem with you, it’s their problem, not yours.” This is such great and comforting advice!
The reviews of 28 Day Boot Camp are starting to stream in from customers, reporters, independent bloggers and even SparkPeople members. Each time I see a new one I brace myself for the worst, but overall, they have been overwhelmingly positive. If you’re on the fence about checking out SparkPeople’s newest DVD, check out some of these honest and independent reviews first. Read More ›
The new SparkPeople: 28 Day Boot Camp DVD is on Target shelves nationwide right now. It's glossy and new and ready to whip your butt into shape if you're willing to let it. It's hard to imagine that the process of creating this DVD started almost a full year ago! Just last summer, I was on a set in New York City filming these boot camp workouts, a process that was fun, challenging and interesting to say the least.
Here are some of the good, the bad and the sweaty things I experienced during the two-day video shoot. Read More ›

Just six months ago, I was wrapping a multi-day, big-budget video shoot in New York City. I shared the behind-the-scene details in a blog when it was all fresh in my memory, and I almost couldn't contain my excitement. Then came the waiting…
During the last few months, I've helped edit and put the final touches on what is by far my best DVD to date! I've watched as this little baby of mine started as just a "spark" of an idea, progressed to a real concept, made it through rounds of exercise ideas and choreography tweaks, caused me to sweat and practice for weeks on end, and culminated into a real product that I can hold in my hands. I am so proud of this DVD and I know that you are all going to love it just as much as I do!
Now the launch of my new DVD "SparkPeople: 28 Day Boot Camp" is just a couple weeks away (Jan. 1—eek!). Soon enough, I'll be sharing more details about the workouts and where you can purchase the DVD (including several chain retailers nationwide—woohoo!), but today you can enter for a chance to win a free copy! I'm so excited to officially make this announcement: SparkPeople will be releasing a new workout DVD later this year! And this one is going to be bigger and better than ever before.
Just four years ago, my co-worker Paul and I decided to shoot a few workout videos right here in the office and upload them to YouTube. We set up an inexpensive video camera on a tripod, and I shot every video in a single take, slowly but surely building the library of fitness videos SparkPeople.com offers today.
We've come a long way, baby.
A couple weeks ago, I flew to New York City and spent a week shooting two new workout DVDs in partnership with the awesome DVD producer Acacia, a leading distributor of original and award-winning yoga and fitness DVD programming. You may have heard of some of their popular titles: exhale spa’s best-selling Core Fusion workouts; innovative yoga practices from the top female yoga teacher in the country, Shiva Rea; the leading dance and Pilates barre workout Xtend Barre; and workouts from Bethenny Frankel, Joy Bauer and Kathy Smith, to name a few.
We had a set designer, wardrobe specialist, hair and makeup, a seriously credentialed director who has worked with many of the biggest fitness "stars," including Richard Simmons. We had original music produced especially for our workouts. We even casted two background exercisers to work out in the video with me! There were at least 15 people on the set from hair and makeup to wardrobe to assistant directors, three camera operators, and production assistants. This was far bigger than anything SparkPeople has done to date.
Ever wonder what really goes into the making of a workout DVD? It's no small feat! It takes a small army of people to make it happen—and lots of sweat. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at my recent DVD shoot, plus some EXCLUSIVE details about my upcoming workout DVD! Read More ›
