SparkPeople: A (5-Minute) History

This short video clip from Fox News Chicago does a great job sharing a brief history of SparkPeople. Our Founder, Chris "SparkGuy" Downie, reached his own goals by co-founding eBay's leading competitor and selling that company to eBay as their first acquisition.

Chris first developed the SparkPeople program to overcome his own social anxiety. A co-worker named Pat then used the same program and lost 50 pounds, which changed his life. Pat then went on to start a walking group and motivate many people. Seeing Pat's transformation made Chris understand that our daily actions and words impact more people than we realize.

Chris then decided to start a new company with the mission to SPARK millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to reach milestones in all areas of life (yes, this is where our name came from). Now, Chris considers himself to be just a small part of the SparkPeople team--and that team includes our millions of members supporting each other to reach goals.

Our team loves seeing real people reaching life-changing goals on the site every day--like those featured in this video. Thanks for your support, and have fun reaching your goals!

  • Wow so excited to feel like there's hope and control! The boundaries of knowing exactly how many calories needed to lose and the tracking keeps it in check! Love it! See ya weight watchers! Thank you Chris your an angel! - 7/29/2014 6:43:11 PM
  • This is my 2nd attempt using Spark People. I have realized that nothing can do this for me. I have to do this myself! Thank you Chris for doing this website. I can't afford to do all the "special" diets anymore......even Weight Watchers is quite expensive. Thanks for caring about us average people......that is hard to find these days!! - 7/29/2014 12:17:46 PM
  • I began with SparkPeople because of a suggestion from my doctor's PA. I whined and moaned and quit after 4 days only to come back about 2 wks later and GET REAL! I am so totally excited by this site!! I am already reaping the rewards of being interactive with the message boards and friends and blogs and videos! Not to mention the food and exercise trackers! I've already showed a wt loss but the important thing is I am feeling better all the way around! - 7/29/2014 8:38:18 AM

  • I used Spark People for a couple years but stopped due to a multitude of medical problems. I have been looking forward to being able to start over again. Ii still have 2 more weeks until I can put any weight on my ankle but I can get started. II have promoted Spark People to many friends and acquaintances. Here I go! Wish me the best.

  • I have been with SparkPeople from almost the beginning and have seen it grow, advance, and adapt. I can tell the Grand Puh-bahs of Spark are paying attention to our frustrations, because when I put a "why don't they....?" status update, the very thing I suggested often happens soon thereafter.
In my dream world, I would work for SparkPeople. I really want to leave this world a better place because I was here and I truly believe my calling is to help others. But in the meantime, I am going to continue to appreciate the benefits of the site and that it is truly free. - 7/28/2014 9:56:33 AM
