SparkPeople: A (5-Minute) History

108SHARES
This short video clip from Fox News Chicago does a great job sharing a brief history of SparkPeople. Our Founder, Chris "SparkGuy" Downie, reached his own goals by co-founding eBay's leading competitor and selling that company to eBay as their first acquisition.

Chris first developed the SparkPeople program to overcome his own social anxiety. A co-worker named Pat then used the same program and lost 50 pounds, which changed his life. Pat then went on to start a walking group and motivate many people. Seeing Pat's transformation made Chris understand that our daily actions and words impact more people than we realize.

Chris then decided to start a new company with the mission to SPARK millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to reach milestones in all areas of life (yes, this is where our name came from). Now, Chris considers himself to be just a small part of the SparkPeople team--and that team includes our millions of members supporting each other to reach goals.

Our team loves seeing real people reaching life-changing goals on the site every day--like those featured in this video. Thanks for your support, and have fun reaching your goals!

  • Since my computer does not have sound. These videos are a little hard to figure out. Is there a script that I could read? - 4/16/2016 4:36:36 PM

  • I have been using SparkPeople 6+ months now and at least once a week I discover something new in articles or exercises, never imagined I would like the challenges so much and, I love the recipes. The article that means the most to me is from a fitness instructor who wrote a dietitian saved her life pointing out that she needed to relearn when she was hungry and when she was full. I realized this was me, I would binge or I would be right on track but exercise to eat more - not the reason to exercise. I am looking forward to what I will learn about this site this week. Thank you for being everything you are - 4/12/2016 10:39:55 PM

  • I found out about Sparkpeople thru the Android app. Started to use it a little over a month ago, and I really like it. The community of users that I interact with are very helpful. Even today, I am still trying to find my way around, but it is well worth it. :) - 3/13/2016 1:17:05 PM

  • It's amazing that someone would do this for people they don't even know. It gives me encouragement that someone cares about my health and is willing to give me a chance to improve it. - 2/22/2016 1:02:04 PM
