SparkPeople: A (5-Minute) History

95SHARES
This short video clip from Fox News Chicago does a great job sharing a brief history of SparkPeople. Our Founder, Chris "SparkGuy" Downie, reached his own goals by co-founding eBay's leading competitor and selling that company to eBay as their first acquisition.

Chris first developed the SparkPeople program to overcome his own social anxiety. A co-worker named Pat then used the same program and lost 50 pounds, which changed his life. Pat then went on to start a walking group and motivate many people. Seeing Pat's transformation made Chris understand that our daily actions and words impact more people than we realize.

Chris then decided to start a new company with the mission to SPARK millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to reach milestones in all areas of life (yes, this is where our name came from). Now, Chris considers himself to be just a small part of the SparkPeople team--and that team includes our millions of members supporting each other to reach goals.

Our team loves seeing real people reaching life-changing goals on the site every day--like those featured in this video. Thanks for your support, and have fun reaching your goals!

  • I'm grateful that someone who became wealthy didn't forget those who struggle. Thanks for investing in people, for thinking of others.

  • Nice video. I totally realized that this is a great site if you put in the effort and commitment and time that you need on your own. So grateful that it's totally free.

  • Chris, bless you for your powerful message to the world. Hope, support and love are contagious! :) - 7/19/2015 6:44:41 AM
  • One more thing...thanks to Chris....I do believe that if there is a way to really help people there is no price you can/should put on doing that for others. I do hope Zappos et al brings some profit to Chris...and that we SP can send our business to the sponsors. thanks again.

  • I hate to admit it, but FREE is a big plus for me. I got tired of paying and never quite reaching my goal...hence just paying a paying while others with much less to lose could gain lifetime membership. It began to turn me off. Here I find much of the same support and a chance to have the support of SP who are on the same journey. I;ve been checking into SP for a few years now, but this is the first time I am really committing to participating on all levels. Plus I'm trying to figure out how it all works (the community, blogs, emails etc etc. Practice makes perfect. Onward and upward! AdaComstock - 7/17/2015 10:55:16 PM
  • A big thank you to Chris and to all of the SparkPeople participants. I'm just starting out with a goal to lose 87 pounds. This site seems to be a huge hurdle breaker to this endeavor. - 7/16/2015 3:50:03 PM
  • Thank you Chris for making this FREE and for all the hard work you put in to making Spark. I only want for my family & friends to support and not ask "why do you want to lose weight?" "is there something wrong (medically) with you?" I'm looking for words of encouragement and just maybe I will succeed in being a health weight and change food intake. - 7/16/2015 10:54:48 AM
  • Thank you SO MUCH Chris Downie. You have been a life saver for so many people and you should be commended for it. I know your website works. I was away from it for eight years and out of control but now I'm back. It's working for me again. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. - 7/16/2015 9:16:23 AM

  • Broke my cell phone, needed another nutrition, exercise - low tech for my old smart cell phone demand. My last app would not work on my recycled old phone. I found this app that is fully supported on my computer as well. Cool. - 7/9/2015 5:51:11 PM
