SparkPeople: A (5-Minute) History

92SHARES
This short video clip from Fox News Chicago does a great job sharing a brief history of SparkPeople. Our Founder, Chris "SparkGuy" Downie, reached his own goals by co-founding eBay's leading competitor and selling that company to eBay as their first acquisition.

Chris first developed the SparkPeople program to overcome his own social anxiety. A co-worker named Pat then used the same program and lost 50 pounds, which changed his life. Pat then went on to start a walking group and motivate many people. Seeing Pat's transformation made Chris understand that our daily actions and words impact more people than we realize.

Chris then decided to start a new company with the mission to SPARK millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to reach milestones in all areas of life (yes, this is where our name came from). Now, Chris considers himself to be just a small part of the SparkPeople team--and that team includes our millions of members supporting each other to reach goals.

Our team loves seeing real people reaching life-changing goals on the site every day--like those featured in this video. Thanks for your support, and have fun reaching your goals!

  • I am so excited. I joined Planet Fitness online a few hours and now find this to work with it. I've gained 25 lbs in the last months and I'm miserable like this. I knew I was going to have to make a decision to lose this weight and I would have to do it in a healthy manner, no fad diets. I believe this is my answer! - 1/19/2015 4:59:03 AM
  • Wow! I never knew where the site came from. Thank you! This site works. I lost 30 pounds using it before. The problem, I didn't stay with what I learned an now, 5 years later, I am back and need to lose at least 50.

  • Here I am a type 2 diabetic and not over weight. I could afford to loose 5 or so lbs. though. My blood sugar readings are not too high but high enough to make my doctor and me worry. I don't have any physical problems but arthritis in my knees. I do have hight cholestral and need to get that down and I am hoping I can be able to manage all of t his without medications. I am taking metformin twice a day. I walk 6 days a week and try to eat low carb but its hard when you live with someone who isn't a diabetic and wants ice cream and desserts. So I would like to know if there is some folks here who I can become friends with and help each other overcome obstacles with their help. Thank you so much for this opportunity. Hope to join in real soon. - 1/17/2015 7:13:44 PM

  • I found this site back in Dec 2009. I met some of my goals with this wonderful site, then I stopped. I got distracted, stopped exercising and gained some weight back. I am very thankful for this site, because I know if I stay focused, I CAN DO THIS. Thank you so very much Chris for what you have done to help so many people. :) - 1/15/2015 1:42:26 PM
