If you never encounter a few bumps in the road your life will be so boring and you will not have met any challenges to conquer. Too bad for you.

This reminds me of several others I have seen (here): one picturing life as a grindstone, with the potential for "polishing" us; another by ZZigler about life being easier for us if we are hard on ourselves. Inspiration to strive for growth and achievement and persevere to finish.

One morning when I was 34, my supervisor tasked me with ensuring that a small contractor group completed a job that day exactly to our specifications. I arrived at the job site to find six men ready to get to work. A very young man approached me and identified himself as the crew foreman. I described the job, physically pointing out critical location details, encouraging him to ask questions, and pointing out where I would be located if he needed anything else. He asked several questions, and then
proceeded to make it happen.

I relocated to watch from a distance, and was amazed at how smoothly the work progressed. When they had finished, I looked over the job critically, looking for anything that would require additional work to get it right. Finding nothing (to my surprise), I congratulated and thanked all of them for a good job. As the workers picked up tools and excess material and litter, I asked the young foreman how he had managed to acquire the skill set to do what I had just witnessed at such a young age. His answer was emotional, respectful, humble, "My dad helped me from a very young age to get ready for real life, and I will always be grateful to him for that."

It's truly a blessing in disguise to have rough seas early in life, or any time.

As a retired Sailor, I like this one a lot. On an aircraft carrier I didn't experience too much in the way of rough seas, but there were certainly plenty of challenges on board, and I grew with each one. Somehow it seems the challenges with weight loss are not as easy to overcome!
