Salads For Lunch Save Money And Calories

I usually take a big mixed salad to work for my lunch break; iceberg and other lettuces are cheap and low in calories. To spice it all up I add sesame or sunflower seeds, some veggies or fruit like pineapple, cantaloupe. For a dressing I go with oil & vinegar, walnut-, sesame-, or pumpkinseedoil.

  • I do the same thing! On Sunday night, I pack five salads, one for each day of the week. I throw in romaine, purple onions, peppers and cucumbers and a little bit of low fat cheese for protein. All I have to do in the morning is grab a salad on my way out the door. It's so much healthier than buying lunch at the local deli.

And I'm glad to get the advice on the iceberg lettuce! - by JAR711
Be sure not to use too much of the Iceberg lettuce in your salads. They are low in calories, but they are also very low in nutritional value. Many pet stores put up signs with their reptiles telling potential buyers NEVER to feed them Iceberg lettuce because their new pet can actually starve to death while eating it. Instead, choose something romaine or fresh spinach which is also low in calories but high in nutritional value. - by MYINNERDIVA
