Is It Real Hunger?



Next time you crave something, stop and ask yourself: Is it real hunger or is it emotional hunger?? If you haven't eaten in 3 or 4 hours, it's probably hunger, but if you are stressed, upset, even happy about something--it's probably emotional hunger.

  • This is such an important thing to remember (thank you!). An additional tip is, when you aren't sure whether or not you're truly hungry for food, rate your hunger on a scale of 1-10. Often it just takes stopping and listening to what the body wants.

    If you thought you were food-hungry but your rating is a "4" or below so you aren't, ask yourself what you are feeling and what will help you with that feeling. Sometimes acknowledging the feeling is enough. Or maybe you realize you need a nap or you are lonely and need to call a friend.

    Awareness of needs is so important in trying to tease out physical and emotional hungers.
