Beware Of Ground Turkey



Ground turkey can be rather high in fat and calories. I was about to buy my usual 96/4 ground beef to make chili, but decided instead to try to shave some calories by making turkey chili. I'm glad I read the label--the turkey was way higher in calories! The ground turkey was 85/15--that's a lot of extra fat. I did find a company that had 96/4 white meat only ground turkey--and the calories were the same as my ground beef, 140 cals. per 4 oz. serving, so I decided to stick with the beef.

Unless you have a thing against red meat or just prefer the taste of turkey chili, there's no real calorie advantage to the turkey--the important thing is reading the label and checking the lean/fat ratio.

  • There are different types of ground turkey -- the kind that I see in the frozen case next to frozen sausage is high fat, containing more that in the pork sausage next to it. In the fresh meat case, I can find ground turkey breast, that is 99% fat free. But there are other packages of ground turkey next to it that range from 7% to 15% fat. So as Lolamom2 and Stubbskid69 have pointed out, checking the label will tell you which ground turkey is best for you.

  • I got my info off the beef and turkey labels in the store. I was unable use the info provided by SP to make a comparison since "extra lean" without the specific lean/fat ratio, does not give enough info. If the extra lean beef listed by SP was 7% fat rather than the 6% fat of the 94/6 turkey listed on SparkPeople, then any comparison would automatically be invalid.
    I truly appreciate your comment since it shows how poorly I express my main point--be aware that most ground turkey on the supermarket shelf is 85/15, which is not "extra lean" and so neither is the chili made with it. If you like turkey chili and want it to be low fat and low cal, be sure to read the labels and pick one that is listed as 96/4 or else 140 calories per 4 oz serving. Chili made with 96/4 ground beef is much lower in fat, saturated fat and calories, than chili made with 85/15 ground turkey. - by LADYCALICO

  • This is interesting. I looked up the nutrition information on spark of regular ground turkey, 94% lean ground turkey, lean ground beef and extra lean ground beef. For 4 oz serving of each, the calories, fat, saturated fat and cholesterol is higher in the beef and the protein is higher in the ground turkey. I'm wondering if you might have been looking at the wrong information? - by STUBBSGMA11
