Secrets of Success

I Was Sooooooooooo Out Of Shape!

When I started actively trying to lose weight and get back in shape last year (right about the time I first joined SparkPeople), I weighed 251, was having sciatica attacks, and could barely move around. I was so out of shape, I had trouble going on an actual walk, so I bought a Wii, along with Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus, and started with those. After two months, I was twenty pounds lighter and could then start a walking regimen. If you can't walk, Wii, but move! emoticon

More Information:

After two months, I started walking once or twice around our small rural farm. My husband finally mowed for me a walking course, so I wouldn't get bored doing the same path all the time. That progressed to jog/walking on our rural road. I quit for winter,(bad idea!) so starting again! emoticon

  • There have been several studies lately advocating the value of Wii exercises for older adults and children. It may not be as active as the actual sport, but it does burn calories. The Wii dance and boxing games are two of the higher calorie burners--Wii Active provides good structured workouts. I have gone through the Wii Active 30 Day Challenge twice and plan to do it again at a higher intensity (although the music gets on my nerves). - by BENDIEB
  • Awesome! I thought I was reading about me for a minnute there!
I can identify with each and every point. I too started to have sciatic nerve attacks and it was becoming increasingly irritating that I was seeing the chiropractor more than my husband!
So I obviously needed to lose weight. No question there but I soon started to work out on Wii. I have regained my love for a childhood activity that even my grown children did not know about!Tennis.
I play Wii tennis, best of 5, for 5 games straight then do the same with Wii bowling and finish with 3 fights of Wii boxing!!
I appreciate someone going through the exact same problems as me!
Have a great day and enjoy the Wii!

  • sounds like a Wii might be a good investment-I don't have children, but I know a lot of Nursing Homes have them for resident exercise programs. - by DVGIRL3
  • I love my wii (actually got it for the kids but think I get just as much out of it). Love the dance games, have zumba which is okay, EA sports active is good, currently using Biggest Loser Challenge which I really like and is a very good workout.

Good for you in knowing what you need to do and keep up the great work. - by NETTYDAWG

  • I have the Wii Zumba that I just started, I am sure I do not do the moves like the girl on the Wii but I am close enough they let me keep going. Regardless, I started with 30 minutes, constant moving/dancing and afterward feel great. - by PROUDGRAMMA
  • You are proof that all you have to do is get started exactly where you are able!

  • I did the same thing with the Wii. Then we got an XBox 360 with Kinect and that works really well too. I've been doing a lot of walking lately, but I think I need to get back to using my Wii and XBox too. - by ROBB1N

  • Great Blog, Thanks for sharing!! So true too! I have an xbox with the kinect so I don't have to hold anything and I absolutely love it. The Your Shape "games" are awesome and when I first started the personal trainer program I could not walk for 3 days after. Really a great workout and they have several choices as well as Jillian Michaels, The Biggest Loser and the new Nike Kinect which I cannot not wait to get. Keep up the good work!! - by FROGSNFLOWERS

  • I just started my journey in January - and I live where winter prohibits safe outdoor walking also. I found Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home dvd and started walking in my living room and I can feel the difference, and can't wait to walk around the lake this spring. It's a nice alternative when you want to change up your winter workout. Your back on track - keep with it and keep moving! You Can Do It! emoticon - by MXRSGRL
  • that wii sounds like a great tool! Don't beat yourself up, you know what you need to do now, and you are on the right track. I don't have a wii, but during the bad weather days I jog in a circle in my living room for 30 minutes while watching tv. Come on Spring!! - by MISHKIN
