Don't just do the exercises he/she has in mind. Learn from the experts - ask questions: why is this a good exercise, what part of the body gets the most benefit, and why can't I increase/decrease the weight on this? I've learned a lot by asking. I also find it very encouraging to talk to the guy who sets my programme at the gym every 6 weeks or so. We review what I have done, change things to stop me getting bored, add or take away things that aren't working for me. He also motivates me by being encouraging and praising my achievements - something that I like to hear.
