Secrets of Success

Cleaning Up The Environment

I tuck a few plastic grocery bags in my pocket when I go for a walk. Along the way I pick up any litter I see along the road and drop it off at the trash cans at the local beach. I not only get lots of exercise, but I am enjoying nature a lot more. Bring a glove to protect your hands!

  • When I lived out in the country in TX, I'd take a couple trash bags, fill it as I walked, then tied it up & left it on the side of the road. Then when I got home, I'd get in my car, round them up & dump them in my trash. Talk about FEELING GOOD! emoticon
I always WONDERED if other people besides me did that! Good job! emoticon - by GINGERVISTA

When my nieces were little (35 to 40 years ago), my Mom would always have us pick up trash, and clean up any broken bottles along the sidewalk when we walked around our 1-mile block, so it was not only cleaner, but safer for the other older kids. We would put our bags of trash in their strollers. - by BARBVB
Good Job. Thanks for sharing. - by BANNERMAN
If everyone was so aware of the litter and would follow your hint, what a wonderful, clean area we would live in. While it is difficult to get most people to even pick up after their pets, it is really disgusting to see empty water bottles and soda cans all over the place. Keep up the good work, I greatly admire your idea. - by GOODMEMORIES

  • I do it too in the mountain where I live!! It's an excellent exercise (like sit-ups) and you're contributing to the wellness of the environment. emoticon - by PATRICIA-CR
  • I hate seeing trash on the trail, and almost always try to pick it up, even if I don't have a bag (but often I do have a bag.) A few times a year, I actually work with a group at some of our parks and have a clean-up day. emoticon emoticon - by FUZZIEBEAR3

  • Good Tip! I especially like those long plastic bags the newspaper comes in. I can just slide my whole arm into in and easily clean up what I find without an accidental touch by my hand. - by J2740LOU
  • I do this in my neighborhood. - by FITWITHIN
I've been doing this for several years. I get some rude comments and quite a few thank yous from people who like to see the world a little neater. - by LOVEBIRD48
  • I take a couple of extra bags with me everyday Titan & I take our mile or more walk.
We are on day 161 so far, trying to keep the streak going as long as we can.
I always come back with some paper trash. Some days I find cans or bottles, since Oregon has a recycle law, I make a little money too.

  • I remember when I was a small girl (about 40 years ago now!), my dad had a broomstick with a nail on the end and would pick up litter while we walked and talked. Still do it today (without the broomstick -- I really need to set myself up with one!) - by SEAWAVE

My husband and I have been doing this for several months now - it's been interesting seeing others doing the same now - and , I feel that our presence out there with our bags has limited the amount of trash to pick-up.

  • We do this every spring as stuff really accumulates over the winter. This year we took 5 bags of garbage off the 3 mile hike we do over a 2 week period. There has been much less since then. Good idea to pass along to all hikers/walkers Thanks - by 69NURSE
  • That is a nifty idea, that I will incooporate in my next hike. On my hike yesterday, I saw several pieces of litter on the trail, just indiscriminately tossed....NO respect....but I had no way to pick that up and carry it out, but this idea I will use in the future! - by SUNNYARIZONA
