De-Skunking Dogs - Forget The Tomato Juice And Listerine!

Mix together a quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1-2 tsp Dawn dishwashing detergent. Add warm water as needed to make enough solution to cover the whole dog. Rub it in well with a sponge and then rinse with warm water. Repeat if necessary.
Keep out of eyes (yours and dog's.)

More Information:

Skunk spray is oily - this solution is designed to break down oily substances. If the dog's eyes are very irritated from the skunk, call a vet for advice.

  • That worked the best for us ( after many gallons of tomato juice) It still took about 3 weeks until the smell was gone.

  • This works so well! My redbone coonhound got sprayed full force, and this really helped. She was a bleached blonde for a couple months, but we didn't miss our home time together because of a terrible smell. - by PAMELALANDIS
  • It makes sense, dawn is what they use on the birds effected by the oil spill. Great tip! emoticon - by SAFETYSUE
  • Hi SCOOTER4263;

    My dog was sprayed about 12 o'clock at night and I tried everything but had to go to bed. The next day I had to go to work and the only thing I could smell was skunk. After work tried everything I could think of and I think our dog thought she would never need anouther bath. She got washed so much but it just had to wear off. This was years ago and we have skunks around all the time getting hit. Hate that smell. I will write down you recipe because it sounds like it works. Thank you very much for sharing it. Stay cool and hydrated because of all the high temps. - by CHATTIEGIRL
  • This works great. We've been using it for years and it works much better than other treatments. - by ANUSCHKA9
    my dog got sprayed last year and it took forever to get rid of the smell. I will keep this solution if I ever need it again.
