I do believe they understand one another because my twin girls who are now 17 yrs old. They spoke their own language as well sounded like Chinese but I'd catch them talking like that and ask them what they were doing and they would start laughing at me and then continue again. It was the cutest thing I'd ever seen.

I have identical twin boys - they are 33 now and live quite a ways apart from each other. One is married, one is not. But they can still communicate like this - it still brings me pleasure to watch them together.

I have twin cousins, 5 years younger than me, and they did have their own language. It was so cool to see them interact and then listen to them when they thought we were out of their room,,,

Years ago, I witness two toddler having a conversation similar to this. I was so in awe of them and the fact that they have their own language that only they understand.

As a twin, they are definitely having a conversation. Friends say my twin (who has passed) and I would have conversations that they could not follow because we never would finish a sentence or just say a couple of words before the other would respond.
