Wednesday-Whould you rather visit an art museum or a zoo? Museum Try a new recipe or food today-Protein shakes. What was your favorite food as a kid? Mac&cheese. Do you still like it? Don't eat as much anymore. When you are really pressed for time, what is your favorite grab and go meal? Protein bars-fruits-vegie's. Thursday walked 37 min. and also ate yellow and orange bellpepper in a stir fry on Friday. Starting on Friday I'll be gone for a week, on the road and out of state. I'll try to keep in touch somehow. This morning, our dog began yipping and his right leg appeared hurt. We took him to the emergency vet. His right knee had slipped out if joint but had worked it's way back into position so he was placing weight lightly on it. Got an injection and some anti-inflammatory meds. We have to take him outside in his crate to walk him. We are to keep him on limited mobility/rest. That is easier said than dine as he lives to run and play and jump.

Terri, awesome job getting those steps in!

Kathy, congratulations on winning the Fitbit! I love mine. If I'm not wearing pockets, I put it in my bra under the arm. No one can see it and I haven't lost it yet. It does come with a clip though, so you should be able to wear it necklace style too.

Tamara, I'm sure it's just water weight from your stomach issues. I hope you feel better soon.

Lori, I hope your stomach is feeling better soon too.

Katigi Thanks! I love my Fitbit. I also like it that Sparkpeople can read my fitbit so I don't have to put in my exercise programs. One less thing to do on my busy days. It is easy to miss place if your not careful but they do have a clip you can use to put it just about anywhere. I don't know what I would do without mine. Good luck with yours. If you fine you don't care for it go back to the other one. We need all the motivation we can get.

Tamara keep at it. Our bodies sometimes don't do what we want them to do and that can be very depressing. I agree with what everyone else wrote. Hang in there!! Things will come around.

Well I have a little more time than I thought. Husband is still working and won't be home until 1. Boy that place really knows how to mess things up but that's another story.

Officially I lost .8 lbs this week but I didn't stop gaining fluid until Wednesday. I was really getting concerned about this especially when a friend noticed my face was puffing up. So Tuesday I went to my doctor to try and see him and found out he was on vacation. They said I could go to the emergency room. Don't want to go there. Anyway it was up to 285. So I thought I would give it one more day. Wednesday it starting going in the other direction. It had to. I got up about 5 times that night. I made sure I drank all my water and watched my salt intake. Plus exercised. It worked. From Tuesday morning to today I lost 5.2 lbs. I'm just so happy the fluid is leaving and I hope it stays gone. Now to get back to where I was the end of the last challenge. 5 more to go before I'm back to where I was. So in 3 days I gained 10.2 lbs of fluid. Oh well that's life with all it's ups and downs. This is a life long journey not a race. I will get to my goal. It's just going to take me a little longer than planned.

I'm making Red Potato Casserole with dinner tonight. It looks so good and I can't wait to try it. I'm also going to go and walk for 40 minutes today. I stayed within my calorie range today with the meals I planned. I will also have 5 servings of fruits and veggies today. Even though I have gained weight since my last weigh-in, I'm very proud of myself for getting back on track! emoticon

Terri, congratulations on the walking. Great job. Coastal, thank you for the lovely goodie and words of encouragement. Lori, thank you for all you do and your words of encouragement. Tamara, Lori is right. You could not have gained that much, it must be fluid. I agree with Lori, when you read clean, Paleo style diet, your body behaves. I don't have Celiac, but don't tolerate gluten well anymore since being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I try to eat as few carbs as possible. When I eat too many, I gain rapidly. Just watch what you eat over the next few days. You will see, the weightt will come back off.

there is no way you physically gained that many pounds in fat emoticon
It is inflamation and water retention.
If your stomach is doing crazy stuff then my guess is the gain is from a reaction to foods/chemicals and stress.
I go through this
I have to eat super clean. Cooking from scratch
fruits, veggies, meats, some rice, pasta, and cheese.
when I stray and have processed stuff I definately have a gut reaction.
Which I am having this week from a cup of Kraft dinner. emoticon
I made it as a quick side for my sons on night and I had a measured cupo worth as a 'treat" now I am paying the price.

Lori, The meals part of my back to school routine is going well, but I cannot say the plan is fully working as my week has been very topsy turvy. I was home 1 night this week when bedtime rolled around, but that is going to change & fast. I cannot be staying up 15-20 hours and function properly. Mom got a new pc yesterday & we will pick it up this morning so she should be good to go except for having to learn a newer version of Windows. Her pc was toast after a worm hit it believed to have come via facebook. 2 of my nights were messed up having to go see about the old pc & then go back to help her get the wireless mouse working on her laptop. She should be in good shape once I pick up the new pc & get it hooked up at her house. They were loading her software on it including virus protection program and she purchased the 24/7 tech support, accidental handling insurance, and double protection virus plan (ALL for 1 year, renewable after that). We will see. I gotta run get ready to go get her now as she stayed at 1 of my sisters' last night after we went to see the Odd Couple play in another town.

Terri, those steps are inspiring! I won a Fitbit at work and will pick it up next week, but I love my current pedometer. I bought it on Amazon for $20--I forget its name, but it's a yellow rectangle worn on a cord around the neck. I wear it all the time and love the motivation it gives me. I'm still working up to 10k, but for those of us who are sedentary, even a switch to 5K can make weight drop off. It's fun! I don't usually wear pockets a nd I hear people often lose their fit its--going to see if I can rig mine to my "necklace"

emoticon 105 spark points today!! Also walked 20000+ steps one day and 15000+ another day. Every day I have had over 12000 steps!! For me this is great. Now if I can keep this up. Love my fitbit. There for awhile I was only getting 3000 to 5000 daily and that's not going to take the weight off. Need to keep this going for my health.

Hey Kinksycat, I saw from your post that you like to grab a protein shake for on the go as well. I saw you said the Atkins type - you should try the Premium Brand from Costco. Atkins number one ingredient is oil based in order to keep the carbs low. The Premium Nutrition brand from Costco is a much healthier option. You can also get them at some of the Sam's stores. My doctor looked over the nutrition and gave them a thumbs up except for the artificial sweetner. But since my body doesn't process protein correctly, I have to consume more protein than the normal person, and that is the only way I can get enough in. I use them for my snacks or when I am on the run.

Hi, I am working on getting back on track like you. I stopped using a pedometer because I kept losing them, they keep failing/ falling off/ kids want to play w/ them & lose them.. etc, etc, etc, etc. I found on Spark people the "Map My Route" in the "Fitness Tracker" area. I can save different routes that I walk, share them if I want, don't have to AND it calculates the calories I burned just by plugging in my weight & time it took to do the walk And, can add it automatically to my tracking. I don't think it calculates steps. But, if you are walking a route like outside, this might be something you are interested in using and save some $$$. I was not aware of it for along time. So, just thought I would share. But, You may already be aware of this option.

Q of & grab & go meal for me - fruit: apples, bananas, grapes, a little PNut butter on a whole wheat tortilla w/ a smear of jelly, or some cheese melted on one w/ some lettuce, or hard boiled egg chopped on bed of lettuce in whole wheat tortilla w/ salsa.

Now, I'm hungary. Better go fix one of those grab & goes & get going. I did get my walking done today... Wooohoo!!! :)

My go to quick bite is a protein shake. Always have one or more chilled in ice box. Low calorie (under 180), high protein (15-30) and multiple vitamins. Lots of great flavors.

Mine is Fruit. I always have fruit on hand and there is always cut fruit in the fridge, mellons or cantaloupe etc. Sometimes it is my pecan nut crackers and a bit of cheese or cashew butter.

Weekly streak: Not doing so well there. I haven't really been walking a lot lately. I plan to take a 30 minute walk today. I will be getting a (reliable) pedometer in a week or so I can track of my steps.

Heidi, Your catsup sandwiches brought back memories of a few sandwiches I was once very fond of. 1) salt & pepper (nothing else) on very fresh soft white bread ***Haven't had one in years, but I no longer eat salt unless it is already in my food, don't add to anything. 2) mustard or mayonnaise on fresh bread, but no longer eat these either 3) potato chip on fresh bread (my sister still eats these) ***no longer eat these but do like to add potato chips or fritos to a bologna & cheese sandwich

Strange looking back of some of things we ate as kids, but money was tight, much as it is now, and back then bread was a small fraction of the cost it is now.

What was your favorite food as a kid? Do you still like it?


Hmm, this is tough, S.O.S. (creamed chipped beef on toast) and Grandma A. fried chicken were probably my favorites. Both were usually made by my grandmas although mom made S.O.S. too and yes I still love the stuff, but have never been able to do much when it comes to made from scratch gravy. Grandmas are both gone & mom didn't eat it she cooked it because dad wanted it, but every now & then with a tad bit of bribery & a lot of begging I can get one of my sisters (she is good at the gravy stuff) to make it for us.

Another favorite is peanut butter and mashed banana & I do still eat this from time to time.

What was your favorite food as a kid? Do you still like it?
Probably my grandpa's fried eggs. At least that's what I remember. I'll have to ask my Mom though, because I'm sure it's something like hotdogs or something. My grandpa has passed away, but he always was able to make a mean egg. So, if he were around, I'd say yes i do.

Thursday QOTD: What was your favorite food as a kid? Do you still like it?

Wow - I had to think hard about this - but I loved polenta in the many different ways that it was served when I was really little - say below the age of 6 or 7. Usually with sliced avocado or steak or pork chunks on the side. I still make it from time to time and enjoy it very much!!

Another childhood favorite, from ages 6-7 up was Galician stew which is a white bean soup dish from Spain. That dish is too complex and I won't attempt it, but I love finding a good one at a Spanish restaurant!

YUMMM, Linda, that soup DOES sound comforting. My mom made pea soup with and without ham. Hers was different from other pea soup because she use a combo of both whole and split dried peas and added hominy for texture at the end. I actually made some 2 weeks ago. Nice memory.

My favorite meal growing up had to include crepes. I am Franco-American and that was normal in my house to have breakfast crepes and sometimes dinner crepes. emoticon

When I was a child, I would have told you hot dogs. Now as an adult I realize that the one I really liked was when mom cooked a large pot of navy beans and ham and baked fresh rolls and even made cinnamon rolls for dessert. Those smells wafting through the house would have you salivating like Pavlov's dog. It was a simple meal but in my mind fit for royalty as it was so tastey.

Sorry, did not try any new dishes yesterday. Spent part of the day at the hospital visiting a neighbor.

Good morning everyone. It's great to see so many people checking in this morning.

Thursday QOTD: What was your favorite food as a kid? Mac N Cheese and Hot dogs. My mom would cut up the hot dogs or use those little Vienna Sausages and put them in the mac n cheese. On an rare occasion when I make this for the kids, I will eat a little, but I can't do breads and pastas much anymore. Stomach doesn't like it. I have developed some gluten intolerance as I have gotten older. That's pretty strange considering I practically lived on pasta when I lived in Italy. You have it usually twice each day.

Myrmen, great way to start the day!

There's something invigorating about September, isn't there? Maybe it's the back to school buzz. In any case, it makes me want to examine mt hopes and dreams and plan for them! Hope you all are balancing the busy with a chance to think about change, too. It helps reinforce my team goals, too.

emoticon otd -- my favorite food as a kid was my mom's spaghetti and meat sauce. All three of us loved it, but I'm the only one who learned how to make it. My mom doesn't cook anymore, and I'm happy to be able to make it for her and for them when I'm home. She always used very lean ground beef, as I do, and lots of spices--no sugar! I just use less spaghetti now, and have been using barilla white. Tastes the same, but has added fiber and nutrients. Still my favorite food.

Haven't gone yet, but I'll be walking to the drugstore this pretty day. I think the distance is about 1.5 miles round trip, but my pedometer will verify! Last year I would have said it was too far. emoticon

The walk will also allow me to check off my exercise streak, but I want to check my new tv hookup and see if the DVD works with it. What better time to try--even briefly--one of coach Nicole's videos I got free for joining Sparkcoach? emoticon

The real exercise will be getting some interminable putting-away tasks done. Sigh. But I can tell its a good day, and it will get me closer to a few goals!

What was your favorite food as a kid? Do you still like it?

#1 Kraft Dinner.
#2 Pasta with tomato soup and a bit of cheese on top.

I still enjoy these meals once in a while. emoticon

What was your favorite food as a kid? Do you still like it?

Heidi wrote - I used to eat ketchup sandwiches. Just ketchup on white bread. I still love ketchup, but I don't think I could eat a ketchup sandwich again, at least not on a regular basis.

I nearly laughed out loud at that.
I used to eat mustard sandwiches. Mustard with margarine on white bread. Sometimes if we had it I would put on iceberg lettuce to fancy it up.
I have no desire to do this again emoticon


Thursday - Challenge

Get out and go for a walk today.
this I will do!
I did 2 miles yesterday for the first time in ages, and it felt great to do it

This was very hard for me, but I thought I would share it anyway because of the creativity in the riddle.
I will post the answer tomorrow

--- Sound of Fitness---
I'm a ten-letter word, but when I am heard,
It is a surprise, but I'm half that size.

My first sound is found when half isn't around.
When a pair is amiss, the other is called this.

The second has one where normally two form a pair.
You will get the nod if you look in a pod.

Together, my fifth and third hold music that is heard.
A pair you are seeking, alphabetically speaking.

And the fourth sound, it will be found
If you look where I send, in the middle of end.

What word am I?

HINT :

There are five letters that sound just like a word of ten letters. The word
means fitness or appropriateness to the purpose at hand.



Answer
Expediency (XPDNC)

The five letters, XPDNC, sound just like the ten-letter word expediency.

After a divorce (a couple is amiss), the former partner is called an ex (X).

Normally there are two peas in a pod, but here we just want one pea (P).

C and D are beside each other in the alphabet, and together hold music as a CD.

In the middle of END is the letter N.
