No week 3 for any of the teams. I am sure we will see one later.
I am all over the place with my eating and it is not good. I hate that I have gained so much back.
I am glad I won't have Thanksgiving food all over the place. We are eating at a restaurant this year.We had a weak moment and bought a huge apple/cranberry pie.It was too good.We did eat half of it and I ate most of that.I sent it home with Angel.

Checking into the nest. Snowshoes sound like fun. I hope it does not snow here until aftern the new year. Our drive is clay and was really messed up when the new water line was installed. Afraid we would have a real mess if it got slick. Waiting to put in asphalt until we are sure the leak is stopped.

Are we in week 3 now? I do not see a link yet. That's ok.

Audra- I would call that a successful weekend.

Denise- congrats on those snowshoes. aahh motivating factor.

I had a good Saturday and ate way too much popcorn at Harry Potter movie yesterday. I know salt intake through the roof since we had hot dogs and sausages boiled dinner style for dinner. Back on the wagon today.

Good morning, Hawks!

I had to come in and share my exciting news with you all...I ordered my snowshoes today! I took a step in faith in myself and ordered the size who's max. weight is meant to be 200 lbs..just where I've been sitting for months. With added clothes and boots I'll be over that amount so I need to really buckle down and get off at least another 10 to have them at their best performance. I'm so excited! Now, let it

Hi Hawks!

Was busy, busy, busy again today. Got up and hit the ground running. Picked up my room and vacuumed the upstairs. Organized out in the garage (Christmas and candle stuff), vacuumed part of the downstairs, did laundry, decluttered the kitchen counters and the table... then I stopped for lunch... and when I got back up, my back let me know that it was very unhappy with me - I think from vacuuming. I love the Dyson... but it's not self-propelled - and my back doesn't seem to like that chore very much... I had to take a break after I cleaned up the kitchen and my mom came over and finished vacuuming my family room for me (she so good to me) and then did paperwork, had a good dinner and then here I am again! Busy day!

I stayed on track with food, and while I didn't to any "formal" exercise, I was on my feet working around the house for hours! So I'm calling the weekend a success!

Have a great week, Hawks!

Joann - I know that money is tight, and that's so stressful, but I'm sure you're right - it will be worth the peace of mind to know that Dave is safe and being monitored when you can't be with him. I hope it will ease your mind and allow you to have some restful time away to recharge as well. Caregiving is very hard, exhausting work!

Dee - I dno't know if I was the first to say "Progress, not perfection" in the nest - but we use it all the time at work with people in recovery. I actually think it originated as an AA slogan.

It's great to see you again, Audra. I've missed you in the nest. I like the perspective you've taken on your setback. I've gone up and down a few times in the past few years, too, but I'm still here. Keep coming back. We're not the same people we were 5 years ago; we've learned new skills and ways to cope. We know what to do to get things moving again, and we can do it!

Well, it's been a crazy and hectic weekend, and heading into a crazier and more hectic week! Yesterday I baked 7 different things, and froze them. I'm taking orders for Christmas baking as a fundraiser for my trip to Africa in April. I struggled quite a bit with nibbling as I was working, but I did better when I put gum in my mouth. Although it's a good fundraiser, I'm not sure it was a good idea to surround myself with massive amounts of yummy treats and expect myself to resist. I'm trying my best! Need to get back to my regular exercise routine. That makes everything run more smoothly.

If anyone wants to follow my journey as I prepare and go to Uganda, feel free to check out my blog at www.arlenemason.blogspot.com

Have a great week everyone!

Oh, P.S.! I maintained this week. Still at 306.

I weighed in this morning, as I was off and running yesterday and completely forgot. I stayed the same, at 248.2. Not that I expected to lose much for the week. It's been pretty emotional for me. I've hired a caregiver to be here with Dave while I HAVE to be out. The peace of mind is well worth the monetary cost. But we're already living on a shoestring, and the additional cost is really taking a toll. Oh, well. "Ya gotta do what ya gotta do" is something that I've heard all my life, so I guess this is just one of those things I've gotta do.

Hugs to all,
Joann

Hooray! a pretty good week for a lot of us. I don't know who was the first to use the phrase "progress, not perfection", but I know I learned it in this nest. It comforts me to say it and remember it in my journey.

Kate- I did not have a plateau that early in my journey here. Could be a sodium thing going on. Could just be that next week you will have a whopper of a weight loss. Don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you arebuilding a lot of muscle this week, the scale may not reflect. Muscle also burns fat more efficiently though, so you should start seeing good results soon.

Audra- so good to see you've got a second wind. Having a good weekend is HUGE!

I am also making progress with weekend behavior adjustment. I ate properly yesterday and walked with my DD(13) and grandson(6)at the zoo.

Hello Hawks!!!
Swooping in to say hi to my high flying friends!

After a super challenging week during what was your week 1 of the challenge... I've been back on track this week... I did something to reaggrivate my low back about two weeks ago and it just really took me to a bad place - physically and mentally both.

But this past Monday, I managed to pick myself up again and start moving forward again... and by Tuesday I could stand up straight again! emoticon
And by Wednesday I was feeling a lot better...
Thursay I was off work, but went to work and did our company's annual holiday/vendor fair (I sell Gold Canyon Candles) and that was fun. Took it easy the rest of the day as I knew Friday was going to be a big day as Mom and I were heading to the big craft fair at Cal Expo.

Friday - Harvest Festival - FUN. Ran about 1/4 mile to the car in the rain - WOOT! Zumba without a knee brace for the first time in 3 months - YAY! Shopping with Sionne and Angie (mostly browsing in Macy's) - FUN! And then dinner at Applebee's where I kept my calories under 500 for dinner and around 1500 for the day - YAY ME!

Saturday - Nice family breakfast, YUM! Local craft fair with mom - got this fab handmade scarf for $20 - SCORE! Workout with Kurt - didn't cry - WOO! Came home and took a nice nap with my pups after having a nice lunch - AHHH! And then worked around the house and had a good dinner!

Off 3 days so far and so far on track! Usually I fall apart on the weekends - so this is a huge success so far! emoticon

I've obviously been here a while now... and even through the "bad times" this year... SparkPeople has kept me at least looking forward. This site and the people here are simply amazing.

I've have struggled this year... with injury and losing Cameron... I've perfected emotional eating and falling off the wagon... but I'm getting better and better at getting back ON the wagon. And what I've done this past few days has given me some positve momentum for a change... I am struggling with fears - of failing, of getting hurt, of going backwards... I am struggling with the frustration of being injured and limited in what I can do... I'm struggling with feeling like I've failed since I've gone backwards some this year... BUT...

I am trying to remember what I CAN do. I'm trying to remember to forgive myself for past actions - as you can't change the past, you can just make choices in the pressent that will change your future. I'm trying to remember that I'm super blessed, even with the challenges I've had this year. I'm trying to remember that my body is strong and fragile - at the same time. I'm trying to remember that I spent 20ish years morbidly obese - so I might be ending 2010 a little heavier than I ended 2009, but it's a hell of a lot lighter than I ended 1991 to 2008! I'm trying to remember that this isn't a race or a competition but a change - and that I'm still figuring all this out. And I'm trying to remember that I need to find balance and evaluate my priorities - at home, at work, and at play!

Well, my discouragement caused me to miss my first challenge yesterday--the "walk 10 extra minutes," but I did stay within my eating limits and danced for 25.

Have already done my abslides today, and am modestly upping them and breaking them into sets.

Had not gone through the spark diet steps, so have gone back to read/begin stage two, and am measuring everything, just to be sure that wasn't an issue.

Did anyone else hit an early no-budging without cause during a previous period? How did you get moving?

Also, how do you put a signature at the end of your posts? I'm Aqua Hawk, darn it, but don't know how to make that and/or a quote automatic.

Good luck to all as we soar into this week!

AOTD Friday- I am inspired when I read the messages here. It is comforting to know others are having similar struggles and exciting to see successes like Audra's.

I hope she knows we love her and still admire her even though she has been gaining some back. She is still checking in and is a good role model. The journey is not over even when you lose the 100 pounds. The journey is gets a little more interseting when we get to the mental place where we recognise the lifestyle that we embrace is going to help us to live healthier lives. Progress in that journey, where ever we are in it, is worthy of recognition. Progress, not perfection.

Good Morning Hawks -

Today was my WID:

SW - 258.8
LW - 257
CW - 256.6

So, I've lost a total of 2.2 lbs this time around. I'm happy to have it be a loss two weeks in a row, so I'm not going to complain. Also, I haven't been doing much in the way of exercise, so I'm going to step that up this week and see what happens. I also haven't been doing the challenges, so I'm going to try to step up my game...

Katigie - Don't be too discouraged. If you keep on doing what you're doing, I have no doubt you will have an impressive loss next weigh-in.

Congrats to those of you have had such great losses this week, and good luck to all of us in the coming week (especially since we have Thanksgiving coming up)!

QUESTION OF THE DAY - Friday:

Who is someone you find motivational in your weight loss journey?

AOTD: Like many my Spark Friends. Especially Audra. I had my DH read her page and he gave me a hug and said "You can do it."

I'm keeping up with the daily challenge YEAH. Doing them between work and classes. Breaks up the wait from my work and clears my mind after class and writing my papers.

Hi, I am not home tonight in fact I am in a small town ( Cheboygan) in upper lower Michigan, so that tomorrow we can go to a good friend sisters memorial in the morning. This is one of the people that we visited last year when we were in Florida. It is 35 degrees outside and we might get some snow in the early hours of tomorrow. I will not get back in the nest until late tomorrow night. I will weigh in tomorrow night.

You new friends are my best assistance, because your progress encourages me--and boy, do I need it today!

This was my first full weigh-in, because I shifted days, and I have been a loyal drinker, a tracking eater in my limits, and have really stepped up the physicality -- so I was excited at the possibilities!

BUT

No change. 250, and even half an inch up on the waist.

It's kind of discouraging.

I didn't do Thursday challenge, not sure I saw it yesterday, but am seeing today's.

Would love to see some sparkfriends visit Hawaii!!

We have lived here so long and I can count on 1 hand how many folks have taken advantage of the offer to visit. There's a lot of inexpensive fun things to do here.

Love to stay and talk story but gotta fly again this morning.

Good Morning Hawks-

Joann- I did get reduced travel in the early days (was a lot less as airlines dropped left and right). I was in my early 20's when I started and had friends in L.A. and New Orleans, so I was in one of those two cities almost every weekend for a couple of years. As far as I would write, probably non-fiction of some sort. I used to love to write poetry many years ago, maybe I would do some of that. Not sure...

QOTD Thurs. - The last book I read was "Tweak" by Nic Sheff. It's a memoir about a young man who was a meth (and just about every other drug) addict. It was assigned for one of my courses, but I enjoyed it (nice change of pace from textbooks).

QOTD Fri. - I am really inspired by many on Sparkpeople.

Have a great weekend Hawks!

Finished my 3 sets of 12 bicep curls--somewhere in the closet are long forgotten little weights, but decluttering was not an assignment...lol

Thanksgiving research is a tough one, as I am not a fan of thanksgiving food anyway! I like white meat turkey, rolls and celery--nothing else on table I like, pie included (I have never eaten a single piece of any type!). So my strategy has to be avoiding appetizers--chips, dip, crackers, etc, and limiting the rolls. More raw veggies and the dip made with reduced fat sour cream. Lunch and a 4 o'clock fruit snack so I don't feel hungry and deprived. And take along a tiny midnight milky way bite--limited calories with the feeling of a treat.

Lol my real name is Kathy, Katigie (kat- tee- ghee-ay) is just a writing nickname. It sounds like a name from Benin City, Nigeria, where I've spent lots of time. I'm an African Studies prof, hence many fun years in Nigeria since age 26, doing research and spending time with friends. And many thanks for all the nice bday wishes!

QUESTION OF THE DAY - Thursday:
What's the last book you read?

AOTD: “The Study In Scarlet” – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle I’m waiting until break to get the latest Sookie Stackhouse book – “Dead In The Family”

Felicia thanks for the heads up on the Zumba for Wii. I look for it when I’m out later this week.

Denise, I use my Wii on carpet and I haven’t had a problem. Except sometimes my balance is off LOL. I normally don’t wear shoes or socks when I do the Wii which is what they suggest.

Eleni, my stepmother introduced me to Lillian Braun and I do like her books also. Mysteries are great.

I wanted to have people try a "makeover" recipe for Thanksgiving but I think most people would rather use the holiday as a cheat day. So it is probably better to "makeover" something you really like that you need to cut back on in your daily life. I would even start small and choose low sodium broth if you make soup regularly. Smaller yet, change to lowfat yogurt instead of fullfat.

1) Research a "makeover" recipe for one of your Thanksgiving favorites. Does it sound as tasty? Will you try it? If not, can you make over one of your everyday dishes and try that? The challenge part is the research. The rest was just my curiosity.

2) Do 3 sets of 12 bicep curls with or without weights. Any movement counts. Limited mobility- Spread your arms wide and do some claps.

Joann- I did not know much about the lapband either. The Dr said it is minimally invasive. There is a tube either close to the skin's surface or even open becasue he "just sticks a needle into the tube and either removes saline to loosen the band or adds saline to tighten it back up".

Joann that sounds like a great idea. Let's go to Hawaii first.
Yesterday we had a very busy day and I didn't get to the nest and today is half gone and I just made it in the nest. Last night at 11pm I thought that I could get on but found out that were doing maintenance which is good. LOL. So things are going better than yesterday. This morning we went and did the bulletins for church.
Paul (DH) had a doctors appointment yesterday and his blood sugar is under control but his BP is still high. The Doctor had some good ideas of things that he can do to help to lower it and so far he is trying to do as she said. I know it is only the second day but he has to start some where. Right?
I need to be a better example by doing my exercise and getting more sleep and keep eating right. emoticon

Oh, my! How time flies when you’re having fun! I can’t believe that it’s already been 4 days since I made my last post. So this is likely to be another long one. Sorry!

Annette – Thank you very much! And thank you for being you. You’ve brought so much energy to the nest, and I certainly appreciate all that you do for us.

Arlene – I hope your access to the internet is working by now. I know how frustrated I get when mine is down. Mine isn’t down every often (((Knocking on wood))), though.

QOTD (Monday): I’ve lived in Missouri and Georgia. I do like to travel…if I can get there by car. (I despise flying.) I’ve traveled quite a bit in the U.S., mostly by car; I think I’ve been to all the contiguous 48 states except those north of New York, Michigan, Minnesota, and South Dakota. I walked into Mexico (Tijuana), and took a ferry into Canada (Victoria, British Columbia). I don’t have any travel plans right now.

Deb – How exciting to be a travel agent! Did you get to travel at reduced rates while you were working at that job? *** One of my cousins had a place at Cabo San Luca, which I think is on the Mexican Riviera.

Christine – Sorry for the gain, but next week will probably be a big loss.

Michelle – When you mentioned before that you were planning a trip to Costa Rica, I figured you were a world traveler. My sister does a lot of traveling like you, but hers is for work, mostly. She just got back from 2 weeks in Lima, Peru, and she posted on Facebook a couple of days ago that she’s going back to Bangkok in January.

Dee – You’re the world traveler, too. I bet spending a year in Switzerland was wonderful! *** So sorry you sliced your finger, but I hope you’re doing better by now? My cousin’s wife spent Monday morning in the ER, too. And her cut, from a can opener mishap, took four stitches also. Hers was the index finger on her dominant hand.

Autumn – Congrats on the nice loss. Sorry your friend found them, though.

Susie – I envy your accomplishment of traveling to all 50 states. I don’t think I’ll ever make it to Hawaii, but my bucket list includes traveling to the 48 contiguous states and Alaska. I’d better get working on that, as I’m certainly not getting any younger. Maybe you and I could travel together, and your husband could watch over my husband!!! LOL

Linda – I never traveled much as a child, but I do remember the wonder of seeing the things I had heard of and studied during school. One of the memories I have is of traveling across the Rocky Mountains and realizing what a rugged trip that had to be for those folks who made the trip by covered wagon. And seeing Mt. Rushmore in person made me realize how much work went into “carving” those faces. Seeing historic areas does bring history to life for me.

Eleni – I’m sorry you didn’t get to see Greece. Does your health keep you from traveling by plane? If they’d just build a bridge across the Atlantic ocean, I’d love to see both Greece and Italy.

QOTD (Tuesday): The key for me to see downward movement on the scales is exercise! No doubt about that.

Felicia – You only eat once a day??? I can’t imagine….seems like I eat about 6 times a day. But you’re right, it would definitely help you to eat more often.

Dee – Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger! I’m constantly saying the same things, too. The trouble is…knowing what we need to do and actually doing it are so different. I have the knowledge, but obviously I don’t put it into practice.

Valorie – Your 25th anniversary trip sounds delightful. My husband went to Honduras on a mission trip in 1998, and he said that the land was just beautiful. And I love what your husband says…I do that kind of traveling, too.

Katigie – I’m intrigued about your residence in Nigeria. What took you there? And same question about Italy. You definitely ARE a world traveler. AWESOME!! *** By the way, I’ve been wondering how your name is pronounced. Could you try to explain that for me?

Jennifer – Which tropical island would you most like to go to?

Katigie – Belated happy birthday to you! I love your “designated birthday cake eater” statement. I need a “designated dessert eater.” Actually I don’t have dessert that often…when we eat out, I usually get a salad before the meal and my husband gets dessert after the meal. So I could appoint him to be my “designated dessert eater,” huh!

Sandra – I think tracking would be a really good thing for me, too. Thanks for the reminder. *** And that small gain is really minimal…I’ve read that our weights can vary considerably within just a short period of time, even with no input or outgo. You’ll see a loss next week.

QOTD (Wednesday): Yes, I love crafting, although I don’t take much time for that any more. I love to cross stitch, paint wooden ornaments, and sew. I’ve just purchased a quilling kit, but I’ve not done a thing with that. Any kind of craft is enjoyable for me. And I also love, love, love singing.

Annette – I need to purchase the new Manheim Steamroller Christmas album. I bet it’s wonderful.

Denise – I’m glad that you’ve found what works for you. I certainly hope you won’t lose contact, though. Good luck!

Jeff – Congrats on the wonderful loss! Keep up the good work.

Linda – How do you decorate a song?

Angi – Sorry you’ve been ill. Take care of yourself. I’m so glad you checked in.

Annette – That’s rather disturbing about the lap band adjustments. But I guess that’s one advantages to using that method of weight loss surgery. Doesn’t it require a surgical procedure to adjust the lap band? I tried to find something about it on the internet, but I guess I wasn’t being specific enough.

Katigie – I think meditation could easily turn into a nap if you don’t set a timer!! At least they could for me.

Valorie – I’m glad that your hubby is home for the rest of the week. Enjoy that time with him.

Denise – Couldn’t you put a board or something hard down on the carpet, then put the wii thingie on top of that? I should think that would work. I’ve done it for other things in the past that required a hard, flat surface.

Deb – I think you’re not alone. A lot of aspiring writers, myself included, never find the time. What would you write about? Fiction or non-fiction?

Dee – I bet you’ll be able to get the kids off the wii long enough to do Zumba. Better rush out and buy it!!!

Arlene – How much of that book have you read? Would you recommend it to others??

QOTD (Thursday): I can’t remember for sure the last book that I read. It might have been “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks. I would definitely recommend it. It was sweet, sad, and informative.

Christine – That 51-book series…is it a continuous story divided up into 51 books? Could you read them out of order and “get it”? How interesting.

Looks like I’m all caught up once again. I hope that each of you is having a fantastic week. Even if you don’t lose weight, I hope that you gain some insight into what is keeping you from success. I think I’m so stressed right now that I can’t think straight, and that keeps me from doing things properly.

Hugs to all,
Joann

Thursday already! Where has the week gone?

Annette- I am with you on that story. How rediculous! Actually, one of the reasons that I did not seriously consider giving up on myself and having the surgery is that I want to be able to enjoy food holidays. So yeah, why bother. Someone has way too much money to spend.

Felicia- Denise is right, Audra and I love Zumba. I am soo excited that it will be coming out in Wii form. Now if I can get my kids to lay off the game console long enough for me to get a good set in...

Angi hope you are feeling better. We miss you.

QOTD Tues. - The things I need to do to see movement are drinking my water and PLAN all of my meals and snacks. When I do that, I lose weight.

QOTD Wed. - I am not really artsy or crafty. I always think that when I have more time, I will do some writing or some painting or something. But "more time" never seems to come. LOL I guess maybe my paper-writing and projects for school would qualify as my creative outlets. I do also enjoy singing and photography.

Congratulations to the Biggest Losers and the highest Challenge Point winners!!

Annette - I didn't even realize that you could have your lap band adjusted and re-adjusted. I'm with you - what's the point of doing it if you're going to cheat in between times?

Hope you all have a great day!

Good morning, Hawks.

Felicia, Audra is very big into the Zumba. I know Dee has done it as well and I took a few classes. I'd love to try the wii if it wasn't for the carpeting in my living room. hmmmm...I wonder if I could bring the system to work a few times a week and use the gym...lol.

Have a great day, Hawks!

QUESTION OF THE DAY - Wednesday:

Are you artistic or crafty? What do you use as your creative outlet?

AOTD: No I’m not really artistic or crafty, but I sing and plunk on the piano as my creative outlet. I don’t know how to actually play the piano, but I can read music and with the basics I do OK.

DH is home from Toledo and emoticon he is working in town the rest of the week.

I saw a news story yesterday that I found difficult to believe. There has been a major increase in people loosening their lapbands for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Dr said that on average people loosen their lapbands 3-4 times per year for various food based holidays or vacations. It averages $200-400 to loosen and the same to tighten. REALLY? If you are at your wit's end and have this surgery in the first place, why are you loosening it every time you want to cheat. The Dr, who obviously makes good money off of this, said it is ok because deprivation leads to more weight gain. REALLY? Because I consider myself a weightGAIN expert and it is caused by overeating! I could not believe that story. Sorry. Maybe some of you might disagree with me but that story floored me. I will get off my soapbox now.

Hi all, just flying by for a bit. Today I am taking the day to try to feel better (I have been sick since last Thursday night). I think the stress has finally got to me physically. Tomorrow's weigh in will be interesting, I have been a slug. But, today will be spent on getting in fluids, moving more, going to work tonight, and finding positive things to put into a blog tomorrow evening.

I miss you guys. Sorry that I haven't been a more productive hawk.

I enjoy many crafts but especially photography and scrapbooking. Working in administration in the human services field, I needed to do something that would be expressive and tangible.

I try to have at least one craft every two to three months for my second graders at church. Most of them really enjoy this. We have made a wreath with fall leaves. We also decorated a song they sing in October.
