My report for the week - walking equivalent of 12 miles. Five fruits and/or veggies every day except one but to make up for that, I have had six or more servings for at least 3 days. My new food this week was avocados. I put them on my egg sandwich, in my smoothie and on my taco. I think it was best on my taco. I hope everyone has a good weekend. emoticon

Reporting in for the week. I walked my miles, ate five serving of fruits and veggies per day and found a new food to try which was smoked guoda cheese. I loved it!

Happy Memorial Day everyone! Here is my Saturday report. I exercised an equivalent of 11 miles this week and was able to eat at least five servings of fruits and/or veggies this week. For my new food, I tried squash. Now, even though I ate squash as a kid, I don't grow it or buy it in the store. So, I tried this bag of butternut squash that you can steam and it was pretty good! I also tried a packet of ranch flavored tuna on my salad. It wasn't too bad. I hope everyone has a great weekend! emoticon

Checking in today, I will be reporting on Mondays. I was able to pull off this challenge this week, yay! I did have a new food in my fridge already and didn't even think of it until I went to eat them. I tried purple radishes I haven't had them before. I only had red white and pink in the past. I got in my 10 miles and ate my 5 servings of fruits and veggies each day. I lost 1.4 pounds this week too! Must have been from all those veggies. emoticon

Saw that snow out my patio door. I am wondering if my calendar is on the right month.
I got to the gym today so that is good.

Good for you. I have done well only on the exercise end of this.
Did try a new recipe and experimented a bit with the instructions.
Not sure about that. My real goal was to try and pick up a tomatillo and do something with it.

Hello Team ND! I have walked/run/exercised an equivalent of 13+ miles this week. I have had five servings of freggies each day, except today and today isn't over yet! I did try asparagus this week. It wasn't too bad. I hope everyone else is having a good week!

I actually got in 2 fruits and 2 vegetables yesterday, and I tried a new food. I got Tilapia at a restaurant. Now I know that's not a big deal, but I'm not that fond of fish, so I gave it a shot just for this challenge. It was very good, and I think I'll add more fish to our menus now. emoticon emoticon

Plus an orange and zucchini and sweet potato.

Jicama is one of those things I have tried. I even made a salad for a weight loss group I was part of with it. I don't remember what all else it had in it but hot pepper of some sort was in the mix and dressing and it was way spicy.
Have had Daikon and Kohlrabi too.
I am thinking some of the variety melons they put out in the spring.
If you haven't tried spelt that a possibility. Tried that. I have to say the faro was much better.
Made 4 miles today which puts me at 7 so far this week.
Great job on the 10 K.
My daughter ran a 5 k Saturday in Sioux Falls. Her personal best time. Still slow but she is progressing.

Great job on the race & raising money rightwithshadow!

I am laughing reading what you wrote about your sister buying some jicama the other day because the school serves it and her kids wanted it...because I was at Walmart the other day and they actually had about 6 jicamas and I was so happy to find two really good ones, and the others were so so. Well this lady walks up behind me and says 'that is what I was actually looking for'. She then said but I don't know how to tell if one is good. She said her kids wanted them because they were served them at school! Haha. So I showed her how to tell, and gave her my best big one from my cart and she was so happy I gave it to her and that I showed her how to tell which were good. Lol.

I have had frozen sweet potatoes, but they were too watery for me.

As for those frozen organic pomegranate seeds...I cooked them down and created a pomegranate orange sauce for my chicken. It was really tasty. I had an organic orange in the fridge so got some zest from it and squeezed half of the orange into juice for the sauce and added some turbinado sugar to it.

P.S. canned asparagus is icky to me. I tried it like 15 years ago and never ate asparagus again until a couple years ago because I thought it was gross, but it was only bad because it was canned. It taste like soggy metal to me then.

I agree that Target has some different frozen fruit/veggie blends that my regular grocery store. My sister-in-law purchased jicama (pronounced hick-a-ma) from Cash Wise the other day. Apparently her daughters' school offers it with lunch. That's one somebody could try if they haven't already. I had to do some research online to see what to do with it. I don't know if I will try it or not... emoticon

Think I'll have to try groceries at Target. They have fruit and veg blends (frozen) that our regular grocery stores don't usually carry. I cracked up at the report on pomegranate. I love pomegranate, but fresh, can't imagine frozen. It is absolutely the messiest thing ever, so I don't buy it, but in the past, I'd pop the little jewels in my mouth to get the juice, and swallow the seeds. There's always pomegranate juice!

Hey Toni the idea is 5 total servings of either.
For the record Asparagus is supper easy.
I have never used canned. This time of year it is at it's best fresh.
I just wash it break off the woody stems and steam it a little.
Sometimes I eat it plain. Sometimes with lemon pepper.
It also makes a great frittata with tomatoes.
I get the whole no new foods to try. I have had faro to. That was one of the better experiment.
I also have every color shape and size of rice around here.
I am sort of thinking about seasonings personally. Also will probably see if there is any new fruit or veggie at the market.
If we are the ones working on this maybe it should be a recipe with something healthy in it?

I didn't try anything new. I did get in my veggies but not fruit.

I won't be able to do the challenge with eating 5 fruits a day because with having Hashimoto's Disease I have to really watch my sugars and carbs even the simple sugars like fruit.

I did get in 19.17 miles.

Thanks for saving me time, money and disappointment regarding the pomegranate seeds. ! There are lots of things that I haven't tried, including the asparagus that you froze. Maybe that will be one of my new foods. What's the best way to prepare it? Is canned any good? I would bet that it is easier than fresh. My new food to try this week is sweet potatoes in the ready to steam bag.

I have some frozen pomegranate seeds in my freezer...going to tast one now BRB.

Okay they are awful. So eating one frozen the outside was good, but the seed was extra woody like bark and pokey. Then when thawed out the outside is rubbery and chewy like and the seed still woody and pokey. Best to eat them fresh on this one.

I am trying to do this challenge, but have already tried all the whole foods I can, since it can't be a recipe. I tried looking the other day when in the whole foods store but I have tried everything from mung beans, to coconut manna, to Farro and in between lol.

The only things left are packaged junk new on the market that I won't try.

If this challenge was last January I could have made it lol. I tried it all back then little by little each week. I admit it was really fun to do.

Has anyone tried frozen pomegranate seeds? I saw them at Target. The fresh ones are a lot of work. I didn't buy any, but that may be something that I try. There's also a berry mixture at Target that has berries, including cherries and pomegranate seeds that I wanted to try in smoothies. However, I didn't think my blender would like the pomegranate seeds.

I, too, agree that it would be much easier to eat the "freggies" later this summer when my garden is producing. Right now I just eat lots of the "regular freggies."

Rightwithshadow - great job on the race and raising money!

Freggies? Oh my gosh I love this word!

I feel like getting my five in will be so much easier when the garden is producing this summer. I feel like I'm constantly making trips to the grocery store and frankly I'm sick of eating stuff not in season.

Terrific, Fabulous, Wonderful! Not just the 10k, but all that money you raised . Thank you!

I, too, am looking for new foods. I've eaten almost all there is to eat available in ND. I ate eel in Chicago once long ago. Can I count that? I did get 10.85 miles in this past week. Can't seem to get all 5 freggies in daily. Gotta do better!

Hi everyone,

This is me checking in - I was only able to accomplish one of the three goals (the distance goal). I'm struggling with finding a new food to try. Does anyone have any good suggestions or something they've seen that they thought would be interesting? I feel like I've almost tried everything - from cauliflower mashed potatoes to hidden veggies in dishes that typically don't have them. So input would be great!

BTW, I completed the Fargo 10k on Saturday wearing a Mr. Potato Head costume. I decided this year I would run for a cause and chose the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I put it out there that if I hit $1k I would do the race in a potato suit. So... on Saturday I delivered. :)

So I will come up with a report here.
I have not tried anything much new this week. I try lots of new recipes but foods not as much.
Ihave done okay on the fruits and veggies except one day. Harumph. Partly because we were traveling 3 day but I could have done better.
I have gotten pretty good exercise I had to stop and count but I am over 10 miles. I test drove bikes again today.
I am going to have to find something to try at the grocery now. Maybe my freeze dried cilantro counts. That's a stretch, but I have to say it's pretty good.

I am going to aim to report on Saturdays. In the past week, I have completed walking equal to 10.88 miles and tried the frozen mangoes, as I reported a few days ago. I tried them again in a smoothie, this time adding mangoes, pineapple and peaches. It was delicious!

I think a new food. Like Quinoa which I eat a lot. I have made this hard for me because I have to work hard to find something new anymore. It's been a hobby.
I am going to try a recipe with tomatillos.

I tried a mango smoothie today. Usually when I make smoothies it's with berries of some kind. I saw a recipe that uses frozen mangos and canned pineapple in addition to the juice and yogurt (with a touch of honey). The recipe also called for carrots, but I wasn't quite that brave yet. It was tasty. I think the berry ones are more flavorful, but maybe I should have used more fruit. I will make it again someday as I still have frozen mango to use. There is my new fruit for the week.

Can a new food be a new recipe? Or does it have to be an individual food, like quinoa, for example?

Let work on overall health.
1. Continue to track your walking mile equivalents. Lets try for 10 miles per week~
2. Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day.
3 Try a new food once a week. Variety is the spice of life.
Enter how your doing on the food parts here once a week. I like Momdays but I am flexible on that.
Team goodies weekly for meeting these three things!
