I challenge anyone to name me two HMs that are so equal that I have to resort to comparing medals to decide which to run. It's just so hard for me to believe that anyone would choose between races based on the medal when there are so many other factors that (IMO) are more important. Examples:

course (scenery, elevation, etc.)
price
food, water stops, etc.
ease of getting there
crowding/lines
friends attendance

Similar to Heather, I find I only particularly care if I'm choosing between two races with no other determining factors. Though, I have noticed that friends and family are more willing to tag along for shorter races (5Ks) if there's a medal for finishing.

I think it depends. For my recent ultramarathon, the medals were handpainted blocks of wood that were each unique and I enjoyed seeing pictures of some before the race because they were really neat and clearly a lot of time was put into them. It didn't take away from anything because on race day you could pick out which one spoke to you. But I think for some other races I dont really care to see them ahead of time. I think if you are trying to decide between races, the medal may be a decision breaker in some cases. I was trying to decide between two half marathons last year and one of them had a hideous princess crown medal and the other was more my style, so that basically helped me decide which race I wanted to run.

I never thought much about it. I HAVE seen races that show the medal beforehand, but unless it's exceptionally ugly, I don't pay much attention to it. I suppose it may be an incentive for some runners, but the medal itself would never be a deciding factor in choosing a particular race for me so I guess I don't care if I see it beforehand or not. Most times, if they weren't handing them out right at the end of the race, I would probably forget to pick mine up anyway. The age group medals, now that's a different story.I'll almost always hang around for that one, unless I'm freezing my butt off or drowning in a downpour.

One of the HMs I like posts photos of the finisher medal *before* the race. Do other people like that? Personally, I prefer the medal design to be a nice surprise at the end. If it's shown ahead of time, some of the appreciation of the design is gone.

Am I being too picky? I do a bunch of races each year that give finisher medals and none of the others post pics of their medals ahead of time.

By the way, when I say "before the race" I don't mean the week before. They post it months before in the advertisements encouraging people to sign up. "Here's the fabulous medal you'll get." And if there's any other bling (beer mug, hat, etc.), pictures of everything will be posted too.

I don't have the strongest feelings on this but it kinda spoils something which I enjoy being surprised by at other races. They try to make it cute but I'd rather skip both the spoiling and the cuteness.
