Do you feel the scratchiness of a sore throat coming on? Here's a highly favored pantry item that usually fixes our sore throats.

Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in an eight-ounce glass of warm water. Take a mouthful, gargle with it, and spit it out, then swallow a mouthful. Again, gargle a mouthful, spit it out and swallow a mouthful. Notice a pattern? Do this until there's no liquid left in the glass.

Dose: Repeat the process once an hour. By the third or fourth hour, the sore throat is usually gone. (This remedy works for us every time.)

Oh, and get plenty of rest, watch what you eat, and stay away from coffee, cigarettes and alcohol...but you knew that! www.householdmagicdailytips.com/inde

Spices to Fix Bad Breath: While no one ever dies from bad breath, it sure can kill a relationship. Here are two kitchen-cabinet remedies to fix a sour mouth...

Suck on a piece of cinnamon bark to sweeten your breath. Cinnamon bark comes in stick or quill form and is sold in jars in the spice section of your market or loose at some specialty-food shops. Besides fixing occasional bad breath, cinnamon sticks can also satisfy the craving for a sweet treat or a cigarette.

Here's another way to make yourself kissable—gingerly chew on a whole clove (gingerly because cloves are strong and spiky). This is an ancient breath freshener that also can help remove the cravings for a cookie or a smoke. www.householdmagicdailytips.com/inde

Is your belt making a “bump” under your shirt? Sometimes wearing a belt around your jeans or other pants can make an unsightly “bump” underneath your shirt, right near your belly button. That never looks good. My solution? Instead of wearing the belt buckle right in the middle, move the belt so that the buckle is off to the side. Bye-bye bump

Shaving my bikini line always causes a rash. Help!

Thin skin and a razor are a recipe for irritation. Plus, a blade can push bacteria into your skin through nicks, creating pimplelike bumps. Try these tweaks.

--Prep: Hang out in the shower for three minutes, the time it takes hairs to thoroughly soften, says Kenneth Beer, M.D., a dermatologist in Palm Beach, Florida. Wash bikini-line skin with antibacterial soap.

--Proceed: Apply shaving gel, not cream. "Gel creates a thicker barrier between skin and the blade," Dr. Beer says. Use a fresh razor with at least three blades. Shave with the grain to reduce ingrown hairs.

--Protect: Once dry, apply antibacterial ointment (such as Neosporin, $6), then talcum powder to soak up moisture, a common rash causer, says Arsi Tavitian, skin therapist at Rita Hazan Salon in New York City. www.self.com/beauty/2008/07/best-advice-ev

Try Dry-Brushing for an Immune Boost

It's generally not nice to give someone the "brush-off” but when it's your own body you're brushing, you do yourself good, I heard from Mao Shing Ni, PhD, DOM, LAc, author of Secrets of Longevity. Dr. Mao was referring to dry-brushing, a technique used to strengthen the body's immune system and encourage removal of toxins. Though scientific evidence is limited, common sense and experience support its use. Here's why...

The lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system, helps clean the body's tissues and maintain its balance of fluids. It includes lymph vessels that carry lymph fluid through the body... plus lymph nodes that filter out waste, toxins and pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. But because its pumping system is not very efficient, lymph fluid”and the toxins it carries”can get stuck and accumulate in nearby tissues, causing swelling, impairing blood flow and increasing infection risk. As Dr. Mao explained, dry-brushing your skin stimulates the surface nerve endings, activating movement in the lymph vessels and pushing lymph fluid onward toward the lymph nodes, where toxins can be eliminated. Bonus: It also improves skin health and appearance by increasing blood flow and exfoliating dead skin cells.

What you need: Buy a long-handled body brush with natural bristles at a spa, cosmetics supply store or online (about $7). Avoid nylon or plastic bristles, which generate static electricity.

What to do: Perform the five-minute dry-brushing routine described below at least twice weekly, preferably in the morning, Dr. Mao recommended, because it is invigorating and because the lymph system is most active then. Using long, smooth strokes, brush your bare skin firmly enough to make it flush a bit but not so hard that it causes discomfort. Dry-brushing generally is safe for everyone except people who bruise very easily or have extremely fragile skin, Dr. Mao said.

Important: You must brush in the proper order and direction to keep lymph fluid moving toward the major lymph nodes (which are in the armpits, groin, neck and collarbone area) and the heart (so toxins can be eliminated via the circulatory system). For each area below, give three to five strokes. Do not brush your face because facial skin is delicate. Also skip any area where you have skin irritation or injury, such as a rash, cut, infection or patch of eczema or psoriasis.

Brush in this order...

Along the inside of each arm from fingertips to armpit... then along the outside from fingertips to shoulder.
Along the inside of each leg from toes to groin... then along the outside from toes to hip.
From the crown of the head down the back of the head to the base of your neck... then from the crown down each side of the head, behind each ear.
From beneath your chin down each side of your neck (not the front of the throat) to your collarbone.
On the entire front of the torso, stroking down from the navel area to the crotch... then stroking up from the navel to the collarbone.
On each side of the torso, brushing down from the waist and over the hips... then up from the waist to the armpit.
On the back of the torso, stroking down from the mid-back to the bottom of the buttocks... then stroking up from mid-back to the shoulder area, until the entire back has been brushed.

Use Elmers Glue As a Face Mask: You're going to think I'm crazy, but this idea really works for beautiful skin! Take plain Elmer's glue (you can buy it at Walmart) and rub it all over your face. Keep away from eyes and mouth. Let dry completely. Gently pull off all of the glue OR use a warm wash cloth and gently scrub it free from your skin. Your skin will feel so soft. Do once or twice a week.

Get More Out of Your Skin Care Products
You know that proper skin care is essential for a vibrant, healthy complexion. With that in mind, consider removing your makeup as soon as you get home each day instead of waiting until you go to bed. It will give your skin care products additional time to work. Also, by removing your makeup as soon as you get home, you'll avoid being too tired to do it later.

Instead of using cotton balls or pads that you throw away to clean your face, buy cheap washcloths by the dozen to clean off the makeup from your face. They are cheaper and better for the environment because they can be washed and reused.

Pantyhose in the Shower: Put worn-out pantyhose to good use! If your skin is too sensitive for other exfoliants, cut off a large enough piece to cover your hands and use it in the shower. The fine texture exfoliates without being harsh. You can also cut a small piece of pantyhose to cover the drain. This allows water to seep through, and when you're done showering you can pick up the pantyhose and throw it away ... no more clogged shower drains!

How to Keep Your Skin Healthy in Winter
From the editors at Everwell.com

Almost everyone's skin dries out in winter. Here are five ways to keep your skin from cracking and peeling in the cold.

--Moisturize. The combination of dry heat inside and cold, dry air outside can be tough on your skin. Apply an oil-based moisturizer. It will provide a protective layer on the skin.

--Wear sunscreen. The bright winter sun can burn your skin just as easily—and faster if it's reflecting off the snow.

--Put on gloves. Protect your hands' thin skin with cotton or leather gloves.

--Skip the hot bath. Hot showers and baths can strip oils off your skin. Take shorter, cooler showers.

--Add some humidity. A humidifier can make dry indoor air more skin-soothing.

Before Shaving: Before you shave your legs, use an exfoliating scrub to soften the skin -- and remember to rinse it off first. Your legs will feel smoother, and your shave will last longer.

I also use conditioner as my shaving lotion for my legs. It works great and is much cheaper.

Baking Soda Facial Scrub: If you have sensitive skin and can't use a store-bought facial scrub, add one teaspoon of baking soda to your regular facial cleanser. This smooths away rough patches and exfoliates without being too harsh on your skin. www.arcamax.com/women/s-136167-106248

Vitamin E for Dry Skin: A daily Vitamin E supplement will help with dry skin, but consider actually using it on your skin, too. Rub a little on your face right after you get out of the shower and your skin is still moist. Scrubbing your face beforehand makes this even more effective. www.arcamax.com/women/s-138319-946118

Unclogging Pores: After you shower, run some hot water into the sink and lean over it with a towel over your head, so that your face is nearly touching the water. This will open and unclog pores, which helps to prevent blemishes.

Make your own pore strips: www.petitelefant.com/how-to-pore-strips www.petitelefant.com/how-to-pore-strips www.petitelefant.com/how-to-pore-strips

Calming Blemishes: To take the red out of pimples and blemishes quickly, saturate a cotton ball with anti-redness eye drops and apply gently. This may not be a permanent fix, but it lessens the redness considerably when you have places to be!

Witch Hazel: If you suffer from blemishes on a regular basis and brand-name astringents haven't worked, use a bit of witch hazel twice a day. Witch hazel is an inexpensive and natural treatment for oily skin.

Answer to dry scalp question:

Lemon juice tip. Mom mixed it with a pitcher of water to rinse my hair. It makes your hair shiny and strips the soap residue out.

Dry scalp: Make sure you are really well hydrated. Add some olive oil to your diet and a fish oil supplement. I just use a creme rinse topically. I have also experimented with hot oil treatments. Mineral oil makes the scalp feel soft, but is too heavy on the hair. You have to wash it too many times to get it out. I want to experiment next with a light olive oil on the hair. Usually, stuff that is good for the inside of us is good for the outside too.

I don't color my hair so I'm not sure of anything. But what I do: After shampooing and rinsing, I pour a capful of antiseptic mouthwash (any generic type of Listerine works) over my head and let is set while I finish my bath. Then I rinse and condition my hair.

Run a bit of lemon juice through your hair, then sit in the sun for 15-20 minutes, for natural, subtle highlights. Be sure to condition afterwards so the lemon doesn't irritate your scalp.

Go to bed on time.

Squat down to talk to small children. It will use new muscles. They will love you for it.

Has anyone tried to touch up their hair color with coffee? I heard it is good for the hair, but have yet to experiment.

Accidentally discovered coffee grounds cut the onion smell off your hands. I had just finished chopping up a particularly smelly onion and was going somewhere. Sitting on the drainboard was an outdated can of coffee I hadn't thrown in the trash yet. It occurred to me that it might mask the odor. It was nicely abrasive and not only did it mask the odor, I think it cut it. My hands smelled good and I never did smell onion on them even later.

Long-Lasting Eyeshadow: To keep your eyeshadow looking great all day, apply a little concealer to your eyelid before brushing it on. This will make it last all day!

Open Your Eyes: To accentuate your eyes, use a little white eyeshadow just under the brow at each corner of the eye.

Choosing Eyeliner: Make sure the color of your eyeliner complements your eyes. Dark brown eyes benefit from plum shades. If you have lighter eyes, try navy and charcoal. Brown eyeliner works well no matter what color your eyes are!

Vinegar is great for many things. Unfortunately, it makes you smell like a pickle. However, if you have hard water, put a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a pitcher of water and rinse your hair after washing it. It cuts the mineral and soap residue build up and makes your hair really shiny. Be sure to rinse the vinegar out too.

Found some lovely facial "scrubbers" at the dollar store. They look like powder puffs. One side is mesh and the other is microfiber terry. Makes any simple product feel like a spa treatment. They just need a rinse after use. I set them aside to dry for next time. I save bunches compared to those facial wash cloths.

I personally use baking soda to wash my face. I find it works great as an exfoliator as well as being gentle to my face. I keep some in a cleaned out grated Parmesan cheese container in the bathroom and just shake some out into my hand. I rinse my face with a $ store antiseptic mouthwash. That's my regular "beauty routine."
As to moisturizer, I'm working right now on using up everything I've got and then I'll use castor oil.

Exfoliate! Dry, cold weather can cause dead skin cells to build up. Even if you don't usually use an exfoliator, now's a good time to start. You can also use a puff or a loofah. Use moisturizer afterwards to keep your skin soft. www.arcamax.com/women/s-126619-898291

to keep my skin clean and soft I take half a cup of milk and a table spoon of salt. I take the salt and put it in a half a cup of milk use the milk and salt as a exfoliate. rub the mixture on my face for a few minutes rinse with warm water. I end up with a smooth rosy glow to my skin.

I know this isn't really an "organizing" theme. But sometimes, we need to "pamper" us; we need to be the "best we can be." So I'm going to post tips and ideas that I find and would appreciate you sharing any you have.
