I think food and eating have so many emotions associated with them that we don't even realize. Think of all the mothers who felt that cooking/baking all day was a sign of love for their family. Yes, it takes time to prep healthy food also, but we aren't 'programmed' to look at food in its natural state and appreciate the time. Watch cooking programs on tv and they have the mindset that butter and bacon, etc., make everything taste better. And, like the other responder said, there's so much money spent by food companies promoting their products. It will take a lot of time to change people's ideas about food and health.

I think the answer is complex, and centers around our capitalist system, where large companies with lots of advertising dollars make it simpler to eat junk. I travel a lot. Rest areas tend to have McDonald's in them, or pizza joints. Every time I watch tv I see ads for high calorie, highly processed foods. It's easy. And in a complex world, people go for easy. Add in the addictive properties of those junk foods (some of them intentional by the food industries) and we're doomed unless we make a conscious effort.

I truly wish that the government worked FOR the people, and helped eliminate misleading advertising, and stopped subsidizing unhealthy products and companies. If we had a watchdog helping to guide the people toward health, instead of addiction, we'd be far better off.

Instead, each of us as an individual (or in this case, as a group) has to educate themself, fight the advertising, fight the addiction, and do it on our own. It can be hard. Note all the people who have to begin again. Just when we're doing well, we go to a wedding or party or just out for the evening and are faced with junk everywhere we look.

Last week I played Dungeons & Dragons with friends. I brought my own food. Everybody but me ate ONLY chips and pastries for the full eight hours we played. This week I told them I'm bringing organic cauliflower, carrots, and dip. When I bring it, people eat it and love it. But it takes time to wash, cut, and present. More time then opening a bag of chips.

I feel really committed to this. I also know that in the past I've felt committed to eating well and then slipped into bad habits. It's insidious.

That's what I love about teams like this. We can help remind each other how great we feel when we stick to our healthy food.
