Kathy,
I'm sorry to hear about your mom but I'm glad that you are now putting yourself first. I've met a lot of folks on Spark who are the main caregivers for an ailing family member. Do you think that could be part of the weight and health issues these folks face? Do the children who don't help out, the helpless ones as you said, do they experience these same health problems or are they more likely to be fit and healthy (besides being selfish and thankless)? Just wondering..........

Take care

Pat,
I hope they are at least able to keep your mom out of pain. My dad died in 1992. Hard to believe it's been that long. He had bladder cancer, at least that is what the death certificate said. His doctor was an idiot though. He was 79 when he died. Too young.

My mom, however, is 88 and a little dynamo despite having sever kyphosis, EXTREMELY poor hearing, and loss of most of the sight in one eye. She comes from people who lived into their 90's and beyond so, as stubborn as she is, she may be with us for a long time. She is a pip but she is adorable and I love her so much.

I'm glad we can help you focus more on yourself so you find the time to take care of you. It's a pleasure and an honor to help out one's friends.

I'm having a great day, just passed another exam and now need to pack for a wee trip. Wee as in little, not as in pee. And you are right, that IS gross!

Enjoy your weekend; I'm not sure if I'll be able to get online until Monday.

Thanks Kathy!
It sounds like you went through quite a bit with your mom - I know that even though you took care of her out of love for her, it was still hard on you.

I completely understand the sibling thing. I have a sister, but her focus in life is her business and money. It's just a case of different priorities. She has paid to have a housekeeper come in every 2 weeks which helps me because I don't have to spend so much time cleaning mom's house.

I think some of us are just "caretakers", and we don't put ourselves into the postition of being taken care of - so we ignore us and take care of everyone else. It's something I'm trying to learn to do. I hope you have accomplished the IMPORTANT task of taking care of you!

Let's all have a great day today!

Pat, Cathi is so right about you have to take care of yourself too!!!

When my Mom was 91 she had to have a colostomy, and since my 2 older siblings are pretty useless (looooooong story there....) as usual, everything fell to me, and my family. When she died 3 years ago I had trouble knowing what to do with my long, empty days, because I had spent so much time focused on Mom. I had forgotten all about looking after me, and it sure was hard to even think about doing things just for ME.

I hope your Mother feels better soon!!

Hey Cathi - Thanks for letting me be the pee in your pants???? emoticon Gross! :)

Yea - it's hard seeing mom go through all the treatments. She had radiation first - then they went in and deadened some nerves to stop some of the pain because they couldn't do surgery to remove the tumor. She's been going through chemo for a while and they've been increasing the dosage. We bought her a wig, but she hasn't lost her hair yet. Surprising, but good. That will be hard for her. She's 80 but looks and acts much younger - and she's a tad bit vain! emoticon

Is your dad still living? Where was his cancer?

I'm trying to learn to take care of myself, too - it's a matter of finding the time. But SP is helping me with that - and my new friends here! Thanks for caring! emoticon

I'm going to hit the sack for tonight - have grandkids early in the morning. Hope you have a good day tomorrow.
Thanks, friend!

Hi Pat,
I like Pat much better than Lastchance, no offense.

The T-shirt? No lie. It even went on to say, "Thank for being the pee in my pants." What are friends for, right?

It sounds like you have a lot of family responsibility right now. While you're taking care of everyone else, make sure to take care of you. I hope your mom gets to feeling better soon. My dad couldn't take chemo but he did have radiation in his late 70's and it was very hard on him. It's hard to see someone we love in pain.

Take care my friend.

Cathi - you HAVE to be kidding!!! I love the quote, but don't think I'd want to WEAR it!!! But I'll make you a deal......... when we both lose our weight, I'll buy one of those t-shirts and wear it with pride! emoticon

Been so busy today - took care of grandkids, then had to take care of mom. We put her in the hospital today - I got her laundry caught up, made sure dad ate something. I'm sure she's just suffering the after-effects of her chemo treatment on Monday, but she was getting dehydrated. Dr said her anti-nausea meds weren't working on the new chemo they used. Mom is 80, so I imagine chemo is hard on her. I can't check on her everyday because she lives about 45 minutes from me, so I just do the best I can.

Diet wise - I think I did okay today. Haven't entered my food into my log today - so better go do that!

Hope everyone had a great day!

Hi Team Friends & Family: I am so glad to read all the posts today. I wish that I could respond to each and every one of you but I'll be totally honest... I am pooped! I got a lot of exercise in today and am going to have to get up early in the morning to make it to my water aerobic class that begins at 9am. We are also expecting a guy to be here to work on the pipe that's leaking and he said he'd be here around 7:30am. I hope that you'll all have a great night. Keep sparking my friends. I love you. Bright blessings my dear friends. You are my inspiration! Love, Dawn emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi all! Took me a few moments to understand what an uglyghan was...lol, we call them whatnot creations...you know what I find amazing? In the past I could always find time to work on my craft projects....but couldn't find time to take care of me....and now...with my new found energy...somehow I am trying to manage both...anyway, it's kind of funny....I'm glad people are going to start trying some activities on your own, once you try it...you will be amazed at how empowered you feel....so good luck!

Kathy, I can relate to the de-cluttering issue. I've not gotten to it most days. Today I couldn't find my calculator and there it was, under a pile of paper next to my computer.

I think this stuff multiplies all by itself.

Never called them uglyghans but I've been using up left-over yarns that way for years. I usually do stipes of double or single crochet - something simple - and when one color runs out, I start another. They are really quite pretty though it will depend on the yarn you have left.

Currently I'm crocheting scarves for soldiers. And another lady on Spark crochets for HAP.org (wish I could remember now who she is) - they crochet afghan blocks and send them off to be pieced into an afghan - again for service folk.

Lastchance, LOVE your quote!

Everyone sounds like they are having a GREAT week! Keep it up, you guys are all AWESOME!!!

I managed to hit 3 1/2 of the 5 on my list today, but have yet to put any time in decluttering my office...... it will happen one of these days, hopefully before I disappear because the 'stuff' has attacked me! hehehe

I make quilts for Project Linus - if you ever get to the point where you don't need any more uglyghans, I'm sure an organization like Project Linus would love to have them. Another advantage, it's really hard to eat when knitting, crocheting, and quilting!!!

with over 200 pounds of yarn I had to start making "uglyghans" we literally take every extra piece of yarn left from projects and wind them together into "cakes" to use. I have fun with them and the kids get to stay warm. We decided with this big drafty house they can use two or three of them.

I have started de-cluttering. I took some things to my daughter's new house. I also took a bunch of my yarn supplies , colorized them and put them in totes where I can find them easier. I took some scraps and gave them to my daughter to make "uglyghans". It was fun to see how they develop.

Hi Sharlee.. I'll try to explain as easy as possible. It took me awhile to figure it out myself and I admit that I am a bit of a computer "dummy". Go to your spark page. Click EDIT. Then scroll to the bottom of the spark page and you'll find the ticker/tracker thing. Just pick out what you want and select and then "save". Poof! You'll be all set. Love ya, Dawn

Bonnie: I am cheering for you honey! I think that your time is coming and I think you can do the 20pounds! Good luck on decluttering. I am such a pack rat that I would NEVER even TRY to do that. At least not at this point in my life! Just remember.. slow and steady wins the race my friend. Spark on!!! You're my hero! I can't tell you that enough. IT'S TRUE!!!!

Cathi: I think that you got some GREAT advice today and I am really happy that you are going to revist your calorie range. I make sure to check it everytime I change my weight. I know that it is recommended that we change it every 10 pounds, but I go ahead and change it every time I weigh in JUST IN CASE. I want to stay on target.

You know, I can't stress enough... the whole point of the challenge is NOT the NUMBER but the good health that we're trying to acheive. I know that many of us won't make our 50pounds.. but we're going to do our best and even if we lose 1 POUND.. we're winners!!!! Love ya, Dawn

Angelfire,

Wow, decluttering is my personal goal for Fall too. I've been doing it just 15 minutes at a time. Some days I manage a bit more. It is slow going but I will get it done.

My weight loss has also been slow and I even posted about it this morning asking for advice. And you know SparkPeople, you ask, you get! One thing I'm going to do is revisit my calorie range and make sure it is set correctly. Plus yesterday I started upping my cardio and followed through today also. It remains to be seen how that will effect the scale but I needed to try something.

Suffice it to say, I also will not make my 50 by 01-01-2010 but, like you, I will do my best. And as I was also reminded recently by a very wise woman, this isn't a race. Let's just do the best we can at this, at our personal challenge, and at everything else we have to do....... and give ourselves credit for all that we do accomplish.

My personal goal is to de-clutter my life and to lose 20 more pounds before Christmas. It will be ahrd as I am only losing an average of 3 pounds a month for whatever reason. I won't make my 50 by 01-01-2010 but I will do the very best that I can.

Cathi.. I live in a pretty small town too! I am going to give it a try!

Shatze: BELIEVE ME.. I work out usually for at LEAST 2 hours and often 3 per water session. I have the same issue getting out of the pool. But I will tell you this my friend... NOTHING in the world feels as good as that light weightless PAIN FREE feeling that I have when I am in the water. I just keep the cane near the ladder for when I get out so that I don't fall on my keister when I get out.

Love to you all, Dawn

Shatze, Oh my gosh! I know what you mean about feeling made of lead when you come out of the pool. My first water aerobics class was about 10 years ago and the teacher was a new friend and invited me to her class. I didn't want to disappoint so I worked really hard though it was all new to me. When it came time to get out of the pool, I thought I'd never get up the ladder and once I stepped on the poolside, I felt like my legs where magnatized to the concrete! I didn't think I'd be able to walk!

Dawn,
You are such a sweetheart. Any woman who is strongh to lose close to 80 pounds, can go out to eat alone. She can do pretty much anything! I will admit going places alone isn't always easy and in some places, like the small town I live in, people might look at me with curiosity or pity. Small minds I say. You may just want to try a burger joint or a neighborhood diner to start. Whatever you decide to do, have fun and enjoy yourself. Remember how strong you are!

Cathi: Your words are so kind and I am very touched. I admit that part of what keeps me from dining out alone is just some sort of unreasonable "fear". I don't really do much of anything alone.. except go to the Y and that is just because I DRIVE myself to go. I am so committed to getting healthy and losing this weight that NOTHING would keep me from the pool if I can help it. LOL I am going to take your advice and one day soon, maybe even this week... go out to lunch or dinner ALONE. I'll let you know how it works out for me. Gulp!

Windstar: GULP.. going to the movies alone too???!!! LOL I am so glad that you two ladies have it together enough to do these things. I can see another challenge for myself. Maybe I'll get really brave and go to lunch and a movie or vice-versa as a real treat for myself if I break the 80 pound loss mark this week. I SHOULD do it when I weigh in tomorrow. Cross your fingers.

Several years ago i took a water arobics class with the senior citizens and loved it but getting out of the pool the first time was awful. I felt like i was water logged. LOL i felt twice as heavy as i was. But after that it went great. Any kind of exercise is better than nothing at all.

Hi Windstar,
You nailed it - freedom! It is nice to just do what you prefer, when you are ready, for as long as you like, were you are comfortable. This is especially freeing if what you want to do isn't anyone else's cup of tea. Why miss out when you can just go solo? It can also be a way of meeting others. I remember from when I was younger and still dating, guys are more comfortable approaching a woman alone than a woman with several friends with her. Not that I think about THAT anymore!
emoticon
I've taken a train, a plane, a limo, a cab, and a bus alone. Well, there were other people on the train, plane, and bus but you know what I mean. LOL If I were able to drive, who knows where I would have gotten myself to by now!

Cathi~ You are soooo right! I found that doing some things alone...actually gave me a new found freedom, for example...going to the movies...I could actually pick where I wanted to sit, what I wanted to eat...and what I wanted to see, without ever thinking about anyone else...it was liberating...and as far as eating my meals alone...don't worry about it...enjoy the savor of peacefullness....

You definitely could try dining out alone. If nothing else, it is a learning experience. But more than that it is a statement that YOU are worth it; you do NOT have to be two or more to matter, to get respect; that a woman alone is NOT, by definition, a lonely woman.

With Barry's schedule I am sometimes on my own for weeks or even months at a time. I'm NOT going to stay home and cocoon the entire time. And even if he weren't gone, why do I require a man or other companion to get a table in a restaurant? Get real!

Wow.. I get busy for a day or so and you folks post like wildfire! Glad to see the thread rockin! Keep up the great work!

Just for the record, even after losing the almost 80 pounds that I have lost... I still can not really walk much. I have been able to give up the walker and am using a cane, but can only walk very short distances and then have problems with my legs swelling. I am doing my WALKING in the pool now per my doctor's advice. So, I do my water aerobic class, I swim for added exercise and now have added walking. It's more resistance so I burn more calories and it's helping to strengthen my legs & back.

I am going to take your advice about dining out. I NEVER go out to eat alone and instead will just stay in. I am going to try some of your suggestions to see if I can get over my "fear" of dining alone.

Keep sparking my friends. Love, Dawn emoticon

Sharlee, The pool sounds like a great option for you and I hope you can use it. You are a very determined lady. I think you are going to do really well.

Kathy, 4 out of 5 is pretty good. Did you get around to #5 before the end of the day.

I met all my goals yesterday but I haven't made my class one of my goals and that is one thing I NEEDED to yesterday and didn't So today, along with all the other things I need to do, I'm making reading and doing homework my priority. We have an Exam this week and I have 1.5 chapters to read first! Plus I'm going out of town early Saturday for the weekend so I don't get to use those two days. So I have to have the reading, homework, and exam done by Friday evening - this is an online computer class. So today that is my focus.

Everyone else have a terrific Tuesday!

Shatze I'm so glad that your workout at Curves went so well! Great job!

Sharlee, it sounds like you have a really good plan of action in place that will work for you! That's awesome!

I managed to do the better part of 4 out of the 5 goals toady that I have set for myself. I did not get around to working on my office, but there is still tomorrow!

Thank you. I did a great deal of searching online for trikes but even for one that goes the highest weight held doesn't come close to my weight--I'd have to lose another 50#. For one that is a reasonable goal to save for, I'd need to lose about 125#. That's ok; it will take quite some time to save enough. Yes, there's a pool about 1/2 miles away at the community center. It's $1.50 each time--for one hour pool time or 1 hour of water aerobics and they don't have a monthly/yearly rate. Mr physical therapist wants me starting with twice a week. I'm working with my budget and asking help from a friend to be able to do that. I found a swimsuit online that works for only $23 and no shipping. I can't walk that far yet. but I think I can push my wheelchair and sit down for a bit and then continue on. Anyway, that's the plan.

Hi Sharlee and (((HUGS))) to you!

I can't ride a bike due to balance problems and so I had a trike at one time. They are heavy and can be awkward but for me it was a wonderful freedom as I can't drive either (poor eyesight). There are a lot of sites online that sell adult trikes so maybe there are some that handle more weight, I don't know. I do know they are kind of expensive so I'm making do with walking and using a gym that only costs $25 a month.

Do you have access to a pool? That is great for anyone with extra weight that bothers their joints. That is something my sisters and I would like to try but it is pricey. Though, for our long-term health, it may end up being worth it. These are tough times though.

You are doing good with your journaling. I use the tools here or I'd never do it. I belonged to WW and tracked for a few days then kind of got sloppy with it. Here it's fun. I'm like a kid, I like to see the numbers pile up and I like to get in my ranges on my food and try always do a bit more on my exercise than I did yesterday, last week, or last month.

Good to have you on our team!

Thank you. I'm sorry about your legs. I tried riding a bike. I bought one that would hold my weight--nearly 400# at that time. My daughter even put a basket on the front so I could carry water and my diabetic supplies plus a snack if sugars dropped too low. I could no longer ride! I thought that was something you weren't suppose to forget. So, I have a wish list that includes saving for a 3-wheeler so I can buy it when I get down to the maximum weight that it will carry.

Way to go Sharlee, a little walking would be better than none. I to have problems walking right now as i have bad knees and lympodema in my legs. I have also found out this summer that i can ride a bike better than i can walk and have done quite a bit of bike riding. But now with winter coming that has to cease for a few months. My insurance company will pay for my joining Curves so i joined today. Its a program called "Silver Sneakers" and its for the older people who are on Medicare plus Blue Plus. Now just have to get into the habit of logging what i eat every day and my exercise and Im back on the road to a healthier me. You can do it and we are here for support whenever you need us.

I've been a member for some time but haven't done anything. I finally am making some progress and find confidence increasing. If I understand, these goals are for the rest of this year. That being the case, I want to set goals of losing 40# from Sept. 1; taking my wheelchair and walking around the block twice a week (that is walk, sit down until I can walk some more. There are issues and I don't walk very far.); plan my meals each day and journal my exercise and what I eat.

Here we all are, "spring cleaning" in the autumn. Well they say start where you are with what you have. I guess that means now and not later as well.

I've been IM'ing (my first time) for the last hour or so with my sweetie who is overseas. Now it's time to get to that decluttering and my reading.

Have a great day y'all!

Shatze - I am glad you enjoyed your workout. It will be good for you physically and emotionally.

I think clutter relates to weight - it's kinda the same thing. Our excess weight is our body's clutter. Although I don't have home clutter, I do have emotional clutter, and I need to clean that up.

Good luck to all of us who are de-cluttering no matter what type we are doing!!! emoticon

Windstar, I like your idea of asking for a special table. I would have never thought of that. I don't go out to eat often but when next I do, I will try that.

Like you I have set both physical and mental goals. I even set some personal goals like decluttering. I find the clutter distracts me and perhaps that is why I have it - to keep me stuck and not venturing outside of my comfort zone. Like you I think that once my home is less cluttered I will feel less anxious and more relaxed and calm.

I hope you are having success getting your blood sugar under control.

Good morning Shatze! How did it go today at curves?

Now on to 15 minutes of decluttering and then I need to do some reading for class.

I love reading everyone's suggestions, it's so inspiring! What a great idea to scan everything onto a disk...never even thought about it, but I can't wait to try it!

I too enjoy going out by myself, originally, it was because I was divorced, and it was either go by myself or not at all, now my DH does not like to go out and enjoy the same things I do, so I just grab the purse, sometimes a book, and enjoy the things I like, such as a trip to the park, library, movies, etc. Meals are okay alone too, I just bring a book, or a journal to write in while I'm enjoying my meal, and sometimes I even ask for a "special" table, such as by the wide windows, or in front of the fireplace,

My goals are both physical as well as mental. But I am taking them in small doses. My first was to get my blood sugar in line, then to lose 5 lbs a month, and the third personal goal was to continue my path to inner harmony, I was a victim of spousal abuse, so it's taken me awhile to learn how to put me first, and why it's important to be at peace with myself, so I continue to journal, and learn everyday,

And last but not least....I would like to get my home in order...I have several rooms I would like to paint, and re-organize...I have found when I have a pleasant environment...then I am at peace

Also thanks, Lastchance for the tip! The bulk of the job isn't that bad, really - it's more just having the much needed kick in the backside to actually get doing it!

Shatze, I too will go out by myself. When my I married the second time, I 'got' the military.... so spent lots of time alone with the kids. It was a huge treat for me to actually be able to get out by myself. It took a while for me to be really comfortable alone in a restaurant, but I grew to enjoy it. I don't do a whole lot of 'just me' outings, but shopping is one that never bothers me, and I don't mind doing most other things by myself if I feel I need to get out with nobody else tagging along.

Cathi - you can come walk one of my Collies any time you want to! They would all love to 'go walkies'!
