There several things that inspire me.

My daughter - taking care of myself for her benefit as much as my own.

Having more energy and feeling more motivated and more intentional.

My desire to run and bike and kayak. That feeling of my body being in tune and capable of doing what I ask of it without complaint.

Sweat all over the bike when I am done riding at the gym.
When I am offered a temptation and I can turn it down.
Being able to live.

When my kids notice, when people at work ask me what I've been doing to get in shape, and tell me that I have inspired them to do the same. When (like this week) I get to buy new, SMALLER, clothes, because I've been swimming in the size XL shirts.

You never regret the workouts that you do. You regret the workouts that you DON'T do.

If I can do it, YOU can do it!

I'm investing sweat equity into... me

I don't know if I've found that "one thing" yet, but I know I'm a happier man when I'm exercising, eating right, and doing what I know I should.

I find it really hard to find inspiration/motivation (i don't know the difference) sometimes. I like to think of the scale as motivation but sometimes when you work hard and don't see change, the scale seems counterproductive. I'll keep looking for my one thing though, i'll get it eventually.

comments from others motivate me, as do seeing new 'lines' (of the positive sort) on my body ;-)

I am glad I posted this. I fell off the exercise wagon for a whole week. Logged a goose egg and was struggling with "starting all over so what's the point."

Re-read my *own* post and did my routine again tonight.

Results: one tied at previous new record from last week and two new personal records (on this journey, at any rate).

Moral: It's all in my head.

Corollary: ALL motivation is SELF motivation.

NOTES
1. It is pollen season here in the Smokies.
2. Benadryl is a depressant
3. 1 and 2 are irrelevant!

Right now it's the scale going down, but at some point I've got to find a new source of inspiration for when I get to maintenance. That's what happened the last trip up the yo-yo. I stopped the weekly weigh-in and went to hell from there. This time I won't stop, but I've got to find inspiration beyond just the mechanics of losing weight and getting healthy. I've got to find a target to make me want to stay healthy and avoid the slacking off and keep it going for life.

When I meet or exceed my weekly goals for myself, that tends to motivate me.

The other thing that motivates me is when I get back to doing activities that I haven't done for a while. For example, if the weather holds for the weekend, I plan to get back on a bike. Haven't done that in four years. That's motivation.

Indeed, since I've lost some weight I don't have backaches like I used to. Great!

I had a discussion with a friend recently about the Grumpy Zone. The GZ is that period when you're trying to talk yourself out of exercise and finding any excuse not to. We agreed that the GZ should not be listened to until you have already started. So, bare minimum is to get the kit on and get out there. If you've done at least 10 minutes (walking, jogging, cycling, strength, whatever) are still in the GZ perhaps, you really aren't in the mood. I give it 5 more minutes. If the GZ is still all around me I call it in. That's it. I can still feel like I gave it my best shot. Also, the reality is that sometimes I really don't feel like it.

all the best,
A

If you run a search engine on "inspiration vs motivation" you'll get the full discourse that is the internet. Rather than prompt another iteration of philosophical hoo-hah over the difference, I'll leave it up to you to research (or not). However, I found I could muster up short-term motivation but needed inspiration to come back to SparkPeople and exercise after my last hiatus.

Remember Curly from the movie City Slickers?

Curly: You know what the secret of life is?
Mitch: No, what?
Curly: This.
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean sh**.
Mitch: That's great, but what's the one thing?
Curly: That's what you've got to figure out.

I struggled for months (about 12.5!) with knowing I need to be healthier but couldn't get past my block. My one thing was realizing that I could reduce or even eliminate my occasional backaches by strengthening my core. I picked my ONE THING: no more back aches!

Well, I'm in my fourth week back. I have stuck with stupid Pilates and missed a few days along the way. I even blew the incidental move to healthier food with a double (quadruple?!?) portion of dessert. Twice!

No moaning. No excuses. No guilt. I didn't blow *anything*! Know why? Because I am so over the mental weight of "be careful of your weak back" that I have NOT lost my inspiration.

Oh, I lost my resolve! I rationalized several times why it is OK to skip...probably even good for me! However, I have my ONE THING: no more weak back.

This may be a boring post to read, but the more I type, the more inspired I feel!

I did my routine tonight. Some increased reps and one was less reps, but I did it and know I will do it again tomorrow!

Thanks, Curly!
Sean
