*** emoticon THIS IS A READ-ONLY POST. Please discuss in the post following this one and labeled as such. emoticon ***

as i mentioned in the post below this one, if you ever have the opportunity (NOW would be a great time!), check this book out from your library or pick up a cheap used copy from amazon. it contains a wealth of information you will continually be able to incorporate into your life!!

so, on with the book study! emoticon

as much as i am hesitant to do this, i think it is very important every woman in our group understands a few basic things about endometriosis before we get into the real "meat" of treating it holistically. i realize some of this will be review for a few of the team members, but please take the opportunity to discuss what you know and your experience if you will!

from my own personal standpoint, i have found that educating myself about endometriosis and how my body works has been what has helped gently nudge me in the direction of a holistic treatment program. i mean, how can you treat yourself at home, in confidence, with no knowledge of what is truly going on inside your body? so let's see what our book, "The Endometriosis Natural Treatment Program" (AKA TENTP) says and what we can learn from it. (NOTE: unless specifically quoted, all information from TENTP is paraphrased or summarized.)

** what IS endometriosis?

many people (including women!) have no clue what endo even is. they just think it's bad cramps or heavy periods or infertility. if someone asked you what it was, could you tell them? in short, endometriosis is when tissue from the endometrium (the inside lining of the uterus) somehow gets outside of the uterus. these tissue cells then attach to other organs and muscles (usually in the abdominal cavity) and continue to act as if they would while still in the endometrium.

this means these cells still respond to the normal hormonal fluctuations--so when you have your period and shed your endometrium, these cells that have grown outside of the endometrium now also try to shed. but the difference is the shedding has nowhere to go. this causes your immune system to view these cells/tissues/adhesions (you can call them whatever you want) as "rogue" and your immune system tries to destroy them. this is what is called inflammation, and it is what we know directly as pain! (its a bit more complicated than that, but for all practical purposes that is true.)

we also know that these adhesions can grow so large and extensive as to "glue" organs together, causing pain with bowel movements, intercourse and even exercise. but fortunately, with a combination of change in diet, activity and other holistic treatments, we can reduce the amount of inflammation and actually cause the endometriosis to shrink! we will discuss this soon!

** so what CAUSES endometriosis?

this is the million dollar question!! there are so many theories. and honestly, i believe the cause of endo will never be pinpointed to one specific thing. there are so many factors to consider, and with all the crazy chemicals we are exposed to over our lifetimes, to me it is no wonder our bodies cannot function in a healthy balance!

it is still important to know the theories, though...it will help you to better understand what is going on inside your body and how your lifestyle and habits will affect you positively or be a detriment to your health. i have made the descriptions purposely brief; if you want to know more, please get the book or google the terms. :) read on!

RETROGRADE MENSTRUATION
"...during menstruation, cells from the lining of the uterus (endometrial tissue) may fail to leave the uterus in the normal way, through the cervix and vagina. Instead they may travel in "retrograde" fashion through the fallopian tubes and adhere to the peritoneal surface or to the outer surface of pelvic structures such as the ovaries and uterus."

IMMUNE SYSTEM FACTORS
"If endometrial tissue enters a woman's abdominal cavity [perhaps via retrograde menstruation], we would expect the immune system to destroy it. One theory of the development of endometriosis suggest that all women lose some endometrial tissue through retrograde menstruation, but in some women the immune system fails to destroy it."

INFLAMMATION
inflammation can be seen both as a cause AND effect of endometriosis. put simply, inflammation is our immune system's way of handling invaders in our bodies and repairing tissue. however, because of our typically unhealthy diets and lifestyles and over exposure to toxic substances (just to name a few), our immune system bumps into a chronic inflammation mode, constantly trying to clean up the problems to no avail. the endometriosis inflammation theory suggests that whether or not inflammation is a cause or effect of endo, it is pertinent we reduce the inflammation in our bodies to produce relief and better health, AND to strengthen our exhausted immune systems.

CONGENITAL OR EMBRYONIC REST THEORY
"...during the embryonic stage, some endometrial cells that should grow in the womb instead develop in the abdomen. They are then activated in puberty under the influence of the hormones estrogen and progesterone."

XENOESTROGEN OVERLOAD & ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS
xenoestrogens are chemicals that mimic estrogen. they are typically by-products of manufacturing processes; for example, xenoestrogens may leach from the plastic in water bottles into your "purified" water! we also either ingest or continually expose our bodies to a cocktail of environmental toxins including pesticides, herbicides, food packaging, petroleum, household cleaning products, preservatives in our food and body care and cosmetics. all of these combined can only create confusion in our bodies and with our immune systems. it has also been researched that over exposure to xenoestrogens and other toxins may cause too much free-radical production in the body, which then causes uncontrolled cellular growth, including endometrial growth.

okay!! if you made is this far, good for you!! emoticon

so what do you think? what did you know or not know? what questions came to your mind? let's TAWK!! hehe!! hop over to the next thread in this forum labeled, "Book Discussion: TENTP" to discuss your thoughts!

a little trick if you dont already do this: open it up in a new browser window so you can hop back and forth as you respond. :)

this post will be coming soon! but i just had to mention it right away :) if you havent read this book, i encourage you to check it out at your library or buy a used one off amazon (that's what i did!). for all practical purposes going forward, i'm gonna call this book TENTP. hehe!

The Endometriosis Natural Treatment Program: A Complete Self-Help Plan for Improving Health and Well-Being

by Valerie Ann Worwood & Julia Stonehouse

whether you're well-versed in all things "healthy" or not, this book is a great intro to the holistic, natural treatment of endo! it's one of the very first books i read after my diagnosis and has been a constant source of help ever since.

my plan is to take some main sections of this book and discuss them over several days/weeks/etc... i feel it's a great foundation in understanding how to utilize at-home self-care methods and in addition, many of these techniques can help ANY women, with endo or not!

more soon!! (i'll wait til we have a few more members. hehe.) in the meantime, grab the book if you want!
