Thanks, FearlessLife -- I'll try to keep my eye out for those sales! emoticon I try to eat as little processed food as possible, so I like to get real turkeys & use the meat for sandwiches, or just by itself for meals.

ASPENHUGGER it is hard to find fresh, but you can buy frozen and put it in the bottom of your fridge for 4 days and it will thaw out. You can find good sales before Thanksgiving, after Christmas, after Easter, and during the summer. These times of the year are when the dates are getting close (except for Thanksgiving) so they put their stock on sale; many times unadvertised in the weekly sales flyer.

I really like turkey & would fix it all during the year but it's hard to find fresh turkey in the stores except at the holidays.

DH doesn't like the way turkey makes him feel, so he avoids it. Thus I have avoided making any for the past 2˝ years - but I think I may get a breast and roast it for myself sometime.

Right, Aniduck! Lots of ideas..............I have explored the veganism/veggie idea for the dogs and cats.............dogs could probably (IMO) do a lot better on it than cats........I just feel you have to be SO careful with the cats because of the Taurine needs. My dogs, tend to do better with meat in their diet, and I can't stand the garbage/crapola additives and all they put into commercial dog food, not to mention all of continuous recalls/deaths from it.

So, I happily make my own for the dogs and cats. I even mix my own for my horses.........though I buy things that are commercially prepared, I do my own 'mixture' as each one of my horses has their own specialized needs. I don't have anything 'normal' in my home or pasture...........LOL..............but it's all good, it was my choosing to take on special needs four leggeds and I would do it again, and never look back!

LOL

Are humans "set up" for veganism? Some people feed their dogs and cats veggie only diets. Lots of different ideas going on.

I think humans are omnivores just like a lot of other animals. We eat when we are hungry but unlike most animals we eat even when we are not!! LOL!!

Being Vegan...................nope, not me.

BUT, I do buy it for my dogs and cats, as I make all of their own food, and they are just NOT set up for veganism..........soooooooooo..........for the love of my carnivorous pets...........I do buy Turkey year round.

Turkey - Free range, organic all the way. YUM! Use all of it from the big slices and chunks of savory meat right down to boiling the bones for soup and sauce.

I do roast a turkey several times per year, and buy an extra for the freezer when they are on sale several times a year.

I also buy whole frozen turkey breasts when they are on sale for $ .99lb; I have 3 right now so no more room in the inn; will use one up for Christmas.

When not baking a breast or whole turkey, I use smoked turkey (tails, necks, wings or drums) for flavoring in split pea soup, collards, black-eyed peas, etc. I prefer smoked turkey to ham.

Since I don't eat luncheon meat, I really have to say there's no other times I eat turkey; I only eat whole roasted or smoked.

My favorite planned-over dishes for turkey are: green bean casserole, broccoli rice and cheese, sweet n sour, buffalo wings, and turkey casserole with stuffing on top.
