I'm so glad I found this group. I need people who understand. I always thought I was bipolar ll because I was more on the depressive side and Dr's never specified. But I've always had mixed episodes, some mania and psychosis. But now it's obvious I'm bipolar l because I have more manic episodes along with the depression. I need to know, how well do you interact with normies? I mean, I have paranoia and social anxiety and I feel like I don't measure up because of my invisible illnesses. I have fibromyalgia too. I feel like I'm constantly being judged by everyone but don't want to confess my illnesses to them because then they'll really think less of me. But it holds me back at times from reaching my goals but I don't want them to know the reason. I've lost 35 lbs since February but it's been hard at times to stay motivated and do what's necessary because of my health issues but normies think I'm a slacker. That hurts when I'm doing my best. I don't mean to whine, I just want to be able to socialize with people better.

I am diagnosed Bipolar 1, not because I have mania, but because I rapid-cycle. Coming off all anti-depressants has helped with this. I tend to be much more stable. However, when I have a relapse of symptoms, it is usually a mixed episode combining low mood with intense irritabality and agitation/restlessness. This can be a dangerous combination because it increases the likelihood of me acting impulsively.

BP-II Depression is my major issue and the need to spend. I can't seem to get the depression under control and nearly every night after hubs goes to bed I sit here by myself and cry. If he hurts my feelings or makes me mad...I lash out by buying myself something on Amazon. I went thru a coloring book phase last year...now, I have coloring books to last me the rest of my life!

Bipolar II here. It's the depression I really fight. The changes MS brings does not help, either.

I've got to keep that in check too. I have long Amazon wish lists because I won't let myself buy things until I've waited at least a week if not longer.

Been living with this since around 14 or 15, I'm 34.

It's up in the air for me still. I've only had one psychiatrist that was certain it's BPII. The reason I'm not sure is that from my own experience I'm pretty sure I've had mixed episodes.

By BPD do you mean BiPolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder? Just wondering since they are 2 totally different things.

I am bipolar I rapid cycling, mostly mixed episodes. I often cycle every three days, because I wear a fentanyl pain patch, and on the night after I put on a new pain path I don't sleep as a side effect, and I am up all that time, well, you get the picture. By day III of the patch I am dragging.

I detoxed off the pain patch completely for a couple of months earlier this year, and it was a disaster. I have really bad intestinal tumors that can't be removed, and I don't really function at all very much without pain relief.

SO, I have learned to adapt. I have been bipolar for most of my life (I am 48 and have been bipolar since about age 9). I am used to getting by on as little as 2 hours of deep sleep a night. This last night for example I was up all night, and I was busy the whole night on the computer. I have tried to learn how make the best use of my time.

I have also learned to NOT BUY THINGS on patch day one. I am often tempted to buy things, usually books on Amazon. But if I really want something, I put it on my wish list and wait for a week or so. When I go back to the wish list later, I sometimes can't believe the silly things I was influences to want to get.

That sucks. I hope you can find a good med soon. You will find something else that works, you just have to play medication roulette for a while. But you are strong and you can do it! *hugs*

Well the thing is, they took me off of it because lithium gave me a drug induced lupus. They said that it's a rare case and it could really mess me up. And now my psychiatrist refuses to put me back on it because they don't want to be responsible if something does happen.

Kay: Are you at risk for lupus? If not, I don't see why you can't just take lithium. If your lithium level goes up then you might change it, but that's rare. I'm on the Depo-Provera shot for birth control and if you use it for 2 or more years you risk osteoporosis. I've been on it for 10 years. I just have to get my bone density done every couple years and as long as I'm free of the signs of osteoporosis, then I can keep taking it, since I love it. Talk to your doctor about it... Maybe you can take lithium and just keep getting your blood tests.

As for the weight gain, well that's part of mental health drugs. You can lose weight, but you have to work harder than a regular person. I managed to lose 50 pounds on Lithium (which is a weight-gainer) and then now I'm down 60 pounds from my highest. I'm on Seroquel and Haldol, so it can be done. I try and get to the gym, pool or walk every day, I watch what I eat and try and limit the goodies. It's hard, but you can do it! *hugs*

Hey, I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 when I was around the age of 12. I'll be 19 this year and it still hasn't gotten any easier. My psychiatrist has me on Seriquel and Limictal. I guess that's how you spell them. Everyone I've talked to that has been on Seriquel says it makes them tired, but I take 100mg in the morning and 800mgs at night and it does nothing for me (Sleeping wise) But it has helped keep my manic episodes down to a minimum. Just until last year I've had serious trouble trying to get use to one psychiatrist. Either they wouldn't take my insurance or they moved offices to far to drive. I'm from Brazoria county, in Texas and in Brazoria county for some reason we only have like 3 psychiatrist and 2 of them don't take my insurance. so I'm seeing the only one in town, and technically I don't even see her, we talk via skype. Which sucks. I've seen many psychiatrists in houston and half of them didn't act like they knew what they were doing. Every month I'd be on a new medicine.

They once put me on a hard drug called Lithium, and it worked really well for me. But for some reason my primary care doctor decided to test the enzymes in my blood and found out that the Lithium had caused a drug-induced Lupus, which most of you already know what is. They had to take me off of it and then my manic episodes started to get worse. The thing that aggravated me the most was the fact that The month I was on Lithium made me feel like it was the best month of my life.
I was happy, and care free, and actually got to go out and do things instead of sitting in my home all day, depressed.

Its getting that way again. Last year they put me on a something called rispiridone, or something like that and in 6 months I gained 60 pounds, I used to weight 130 and now at 193, I feel worse about myself. Worse then I ever did on any of the other meds or anything. Thats why I am here today. lol....

Sorry for such a long story... I hope that didn't sound like I was whining. :/

Thank you for posting to me, Larissa. (I hope that is your name) It sounds like we have had the same problem. Up until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. Then sleep the day away. I've been trying to go to bed at around 11:00 pm. It does seem to be helping a little.

Lisa: I'm here if you need to talk... Just send me a Spark Mail and we can chat. I used to be the same way... I would sleep until 2pm and go to bed at midnight. I lost so many days that way. It's taken me years, but now I can wake up around 10 am. I just set my alarm for earlier and earlier times... maybe do 2 weeks normal, then go down about a half hour for another 2-4 weeks until it's natural. It's a slow process and not fun, but your body will get used to it. *hugs*

Wow, Klassy813!

I can so relate to your situation. Everyday it is the same. In the morning I figure my budget and make my list of things to do for the day. My memory is terrible, so I even have to list "Take Meds". Everyday I end up sleeping too much and getting very, very little done.
It's so frustrating! I feel so guilty for being so lazy.

Maybe we can encourage each other. Couldn't hurt to try.

Hi Suzi,

I was diagnosed bipolar 1 in 2006 after a pretty bad manic episode. According to what my Dr. told me and what I've read in the many books I've read on the subject, you are bipolar 1 if you get depressive episodes and have had at least 1 manic episode in you life. Bipolar 2 have hypomanic episodes and depressive episodes.

Like you, I spent most of my life thinking I was crazy and a horrible person for doing some of the things I'd done. It wasn't until the Dr. diagnosed me and I began meds and therapy, that I realized that the actions I'd taken were part of the manic episodes. With the proper meds and the therapy I have been stable for approx. 2.5 years now.

If you ever want to talk more, just give a shout either here or to my SparkMail.

Bipolar type II, mostly looking like depression, but I reacted to antidepressants (Effexor) with a mixed state hypomania that ended me in the ER. That's how I found out what was going on. Hard to have to take meds that take the feeling that I finally have some energy for things away again!

I know for me the migraines seem to be related to swings...I'm not sure if I'd call it a signal or a symptom but there definitely seems to be a correlation in the two. Luckily the frequency of both the headaches and the swings has gone down significantly for me over the last few years, but I still get anxious and a bit frightened whenever I do get a migraine, as sometimes it can preface a bout of what I call HulkoMania (since my temper goes off the charts when I'm manic and in pain, if I'm not mentally prepared for it.)

I had a horrible migraine last night.. I even called the health nurse. She told me to go to the ER but I couldn't get a ride and I wasn't prepared to take the bus home. Geo had his sleep study last night so he couldn't take me or pick me up. I had to take 1 Fioricet and 2 Midrin. I finally fell asleep and now I'm hypomanic. Maybe migraines signal mood swings? I don't know.

Bipolar type II here with ultra rapid cycles. I flip moods every 3-4 days! It's not so bad because my depressions never last that long but it was a bugger getting a med cocktail that worked well. It took 12 years! But I do pretty well now and I never put down the migraines I used to get to the mood changes but that makes me say hmmmmm now.

I a Bi-polar type 2. I have manic and depressive times. I have been this way for as long as I can remember. My parents thought I was just acting up or acting out. At 22 years of age, I was diagnosed with the Bi-polar and many other diagnoses that I have been so many different meds till they found the correct meds and dosages. I live pretty normal but hey, who can actually say what normal is? LOL!

It's been ages since my diagnosis so I don't remember specifics, but I think the doctors and psychiatrists said type II, pretty sure there's a rapid cycling component in there too since my moods swings at that point tended to happen every 2-4 weeks (usually book-ended by the worst migraines I've ever experienced...)

Things have luckily calmed down a lot for me these days.

Hi Klassy - They denied me the first time too but I persevered and filled out the 2nd round of forms, went to their shrink and finally got approved. I did not have to get a lawyer but I would have if they'd denied me after the 2nd round.

Bipolar 2 with long low period. I probably should start another mood chart but it is hard for me to stay with anything anymore. Today it is a bed day. My safety retreat

Thank you Larissa. Most days I do pretty good. Then there's the exception. Tomorrow I will go to the gym or at least get in a walk.

Diane, I hope you feel better soon. It sucks when you just can't get out of bed and get going. I have been there many times. I've been trying to wake up earlier in the morning and going to the gym. I have my gym buddy Lisa calling me to go to the gym. Maybe you can meet someone at the gym to be an accountability buddy. I know it helps me.

I am definitely Bipolar I. I have had psychotic breaks, hospitalizations, manic and depressive episodes. I am on both Depakote and Zyprexa but the lowest amount. The thing that helps me most to be happy is EXERCISE. But, I have to force myself to exercise. It doesn't come easy. I recently joined a gym and it has helped to move more and be out in public. I try swimming at least twice a week and feel so much better. My room mate Norma is a godsend. She has been with me since 1996. She has seen me in horrible moods but likes me as a bff anyway. We are sisters in the faith too. I also live with my two cats, Timon & Ebony. By the way I am Diane. Not new but just haven't posted in a long time. Usually I try to stay active but can't get motivated today. It happens. Thanks for listening.

*hugs Klassy* They always deny you the first time... they want to see how much you want it. Get a lawyer.. they take a cut of your back pay instead of you having to pay up front. I was lucky that I was approved my first time... my 10+ hospitalizations did that for me.

Well...got some depressing news this morn...I do not qualify for disability...yet I can't work. I haven't worked in 13 years and we have too much money sitting in our savings account (for son's college education). But, she did say I could try for SSI in January after we pay son's Spring tuition. But, all I want to do now is go to bed and sleep...motivation for the day is gone.

I read--but I have taken up a new style of reading to boost my retention. I underline as I read and I take notes in the margins. I have a ruler to underline and use different brightly colored pens.

I also have been making copies of biplar resourse workbooks and worksheets--as if I didn't have einough already-

I have been managing to get enough done, but I know I need to do better. That's all there is to it.

I AGREE! I've lost my desire to read and have a ton of books that need reading. But, the buying sprees and hostile outbreaks were no fun for me or my family. I have lost a lot of myself being on these meds...but, the alternative is unacceptable. I manage to get things done on my time...not exactly to the liking of my husband at times...but, they do get done. I make lists to keep myself on track and so that I get my town trips completely accomplished.

I sometimes forget to turn off the burner, or the oven. I've left my keys in the door a couple times, and I leave the door unlocked a lot (and I don't live in the best of neighborhoods). Geo normally checks up on me to make sure everything's okay. It's the meds... they destroy your memory.. but I would rather have a bad memory than be in the hospital because I'm going crazy non-medicated.

Aylamay -- You are not alone...you just described me and my days. I just managed to get the laundry finished and now I'm glued to my computer and have the tv on some football. Most of my days are filled with constant thoughts of things that I need to get done and plans to get them done...just never executed. My forgetting problems can be dangerous..as I have forgotten to turn the stove or burners off every week at least once. So now, I do not cook unless my husband is home or I use the slow cooker or microwave.

Right now I am having a little bit of "mixed episodes," that is physically I'm depressed, but mentally I am going very fast. I have some characteristics of mania and depression, and it is EXTREMELY frustrating. I start all kinds of projects, but never finish them, buy things (I just bought $250 worth of clothes).

But when it comes down to physicallly taking care of myself, it is hard to remember to eat, I sleep too much, and it's a hard thing to take a bath. I really need a bath right now. I will sit in a chair for hours, with the computer and the tv near me. I even fell asleep here last night. I just vegetate, but I think like crazy. It has been like this for a long while. I get done what HAS to be done, then I go back in my chair.

If anyone Has any ideas, and it is within reasonable time of posting of this note, send me a message, I am open to ANY ideas.

Margie

I am currently on Saphris just 5 mg. Suppose to be 10mg,but I'm doing real well on this dosage and so she is keeping me on it. she took me off the Zyprexa that my old Dr. had me on due to my diabetes history.

*hugs Klassy* I'm sorry. Memory problems are common with the meds they put us on. I would ask your doctor if there is something that they can change so you can remember things better. I don't know about your meds, so I can't help you, but I know I have memory issues due to my meds. *hugs again*

I had my Dr. appt. on Wed. and forgot to ask her which I am. I had too many other issues to talk with her about from the past 3 months. I've tried to get a job...but, only lasted a week. I could not remember things I was asked/told to do or what I was suppose to be doing when I got up from my desk with papers in my hands. It was a miserable -- horrible experience. I could not believe how hard it was for me to cope in an office environment...I worked in Dr. & Dentist offices all my younger years. I feel like I've failed miserably.

i'm BP 1 with ultra rapid cycling called ultradian .. and they're mixed affective .. meaning i usually have high and low at the same time (aka homicidal and suicidal same time)

... but also have Asperger's which explains the touches of ADHD, Borderline Personality, OCD, Antisocial, Anxiety, Somatization

The most important distinctions between bipolar I and II are:
A person with bipolar I has manic episodes, while someone with bipolar II has hypomanic episodes taken from bipolar.about.com/cs/faqs/f/faq_bp12

I don't know if I am I or II. How do you tell? My first Dr. was lousy...she had me on a med that aggravated my diabetes to the point I was put on three meds at one time to keep it under control. I have just started seeing a new one and she has not said if I am type I or II. I do know that I was diagnosed as bi-polar with manic depression and anxiety. My current Dr. agrees with this diagnosis. I guess when I see her next month I will have to ask her.

I have schizoaffective bipolar disorder. It's a combination of paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar 1. It's not fun, but my meds are making me mostly stable. I just have a little hallucination here and there, and a bit of depression right now.

Definitely Bipolar I I get very VERY manic as well as very VERY depressed. But when I was first diagnosed, when I was a teenager, the mania wan't rcognized bcause it took the form of agitation ( I was a teen). I matured, and so did my bipolar.

Just wondering how many of us are bipolar I or II? I am probably bipolar II but have been in a major depression for going on 2 years. This has kind of been my pattern so I was misdiagnosed as having major depression for a very long time (since the early 80's). comments?
