Reflections...

1. Like JNN, I'm not sure how I used to get soooo much more cardio and ST in, because it sure didn't happen this time. My work life is picking up, as expected, and I'm exhausted by the time I get home. (I feel for you, Alan.)

2. I enjoyed the partnership, and meeting new people.

3. I've got the nutrition thing figured out. It's almost coming naturally to me nowadays. Although, my camel routine has reared it's ugly head, and I'm not getting in my 8 glasses of water everyday. Please put that back into the next challenge.

4. This is a great group of people that support each other. I love it here!!!!

Right Alan, I haven't started. How about I give everyone until tomorrow at 6pm CST? If you haven't posted, please do. I will tally points and get a winner announced for tomorrow. Sorry about my absence!

I don't think it's too late to post the last few days of your results 4GAYATRI. Winner hasn't been named yet, and until we hear otherwise, Jenn probably is still recoverning from her eye infection - so she may not have even started the tally.

Better late than never I say!!

I didn't get around to posting for the challenge the last 3-4 days and now I guess it is too late.

I learnt something about myself too - I can manage the nutrition part well and the cardio too but I don't enjoy the strength training.
Keeping within the calorie range is not too difficult but I have trouble getting enough protein. If I am not careful most of my calories come through carbs.
Congratulations to the winner and I will do better with the next challenge.

For all you corpo types (and everyone else, of course), it's time for a little LESSONS LEARNED from this challenge. I'll start -

1) I loved that I didn't see many dropouts (if any)! This proves something I've known about myself for a long time. It's hard to put yourself first and its alot easier to do something when its for someone else. Is that bad? Probably! In the meantime, if it takes being responsible to a buddy to stay on track and get motivated, I'm all for it!

2) Fruits and veggies. This challenge showed me what I already knew (but was somewhat in denial of) - I wasn't getting enough of these! I found out that I loved 1 cup of chopped green onions with rice or in an omelet. It got me a full serving of veggies in and blends well with other things. I also didn't mind getting 5 servings in too much when I got two in at breakfast. Three more for the rest of the day wasn't that hard to do.

3) I have no idea how I did cardio and strength training 6 days/week in past challenges because I didn't get it all in on this one. I know I'm alot busier now but still.. will need to think about this one a bit more.

4) I missed the trash talk. I knew early on I wasn't going to win so I didn't feel like I could trash as much. I will have to find a way to banter even if I'm not winning a challenge :).

I will post again if anything else comes to mind. Congrats to the winner - whomever that may be!

Jenn (and JNN) ... this was a great challenge. Thank you for it. Looking forward to the next one. It was especially good as I have been cooked and toasted at work. I'm writing this having not slept in 4 days (well, about an hour's nap each night). The challenge is ending just as this major work project is too. Perfect timing. Now I'm headed to bed.

I will be posting my final 3/14 posting later today. And so will my buddy and new friend ROSEPETAL_NT. Accountability is a great trait to help towards success. Knowing you don't want to let a buddy down - an even better trait. We both did great in that aspect.

Okay... before I collapse and put my head through the laptop display... I am going to sleep. G'night all and have a great Sunday!!

Hi this is Jenn's husband. She asked that I get online and let you know that she has an eye infection and has been told that she cannot use the computer until it clears up. She hopes to be back by Monday, but has to get doctor approval first.

Well everyone, I lost a few days there....I posted, but wasn't very successful at staying on track. I was celebrating my daughter's second birthday and having a wonderful time with family and friends. I did attempt to make it a healthy birthday with lots of vegetables and fruit for finger foods....but the hot dogs and cake tipped the scales...and I must not forget the nachos and pretzels. However, I usually do just quit and chalk it up to a failed attempt...the weight loss and healthful eating! But I have a wonderful partner in this challenge and he has helped me see that sticking to something doesn't mean perfection....it just means dedication and accountability. I am back on the wagon and I have posted for everyday....even though there were days with no points....but the accountability is wonderful. I thank everyone for their stories and I thank my partner for his motivational thoughts!

What is the hardest thing for you about losing/maintaining weight?

The hardest thing for me about losing weight in general is believing I can do it. There have been so many times when I have lost 20-40 pounds and then turned around and gained it back plus more. I guess I feel like that's what I'm capable of. In my head I know this isn't true, which I suppose is why I continue to try. On a more positive note, 'cuz that's the kind of girl I am, I like who I am, I'm good at what I do, and I am proud of the life I have created with my family. These things are far more important to me than weight loss, but it's always nagging at the back of my mind and I want to banish it from my thoughts forever!

In terms of this challenge, getting in the cardio is the hardest part. My friend and I are doing the Cathe Friedrichs STS workouts three times a week and they are completely killer so I am counting them as both cardio and strength training, but it's only three days a week. If you've never done Cathe look her up at cathenation.com

The only one who can stop me...is me...and I can take her!

LOL JNN ... I'm very happy to see you haven't conceded (yet :-). That you wrote that you are "*almost* OK" ... puts a smile on my face knowing you're stick going for the gold!!

I have actually been thinking of the next challenge. No, I'm not assuming victory (yet :-), but as one of the team leaders (albeit the quiet, stays-in-the-background, very happy that Jenn is a great leader, kind of way). There's definite room for improvement in my daily gameplan that I'd want to push myself to, and goals I try to reach daily that I'd like to be able to suggest to others by way of a challenge. LOL - I might even consider a challenge item related to sodium!!

Anyway, my kudos to everyone who has been participating so far!! From the looks of it, *everyone* is winning and it is nice to see a good turnout and daily postings. (Which is, in part why I can be an in-the-background leader - this team is very self-sustaining).

G'night all!!

My biggest challenge is the exercise time. It is very hard to find that much time to put to exercising. I managed good the first week but I dont think that I will have that much time next week, but I will do the best I can.

BONUS QUESTION ANSWER: There are many challenges I have been experiencing, but the top one would be night eating. I work very long hours and when I get home at night… All I want to do is eat/graze/veg on TV and tune out! My wonderful motivation from the early part of the day dissipates and I am left with guilt and disappointment when I lose focus. I have been getting better at making smarter choices in the night, but still feel the need to graze. I guess since I still have this self-inflicted predicament, that would explain my 6 week-long plateau!

Alan - Yah, you have a chance of winning since my schedule isn't cooperating. I've decided that I'm almost OK with it since I'm a little curious to see what the Alan challenge would be like. I wouldn't be too sure though - there are quite a few people who look like they are giving you a run for your money! Good job ladies (and gents)!

This challenge has been very rewarding to me already because it's really pushing me to eat healthier. To be a cliche - "I already feel like a winner!". This challenge has managed to revamp my eating habits and I feel amazing. The change in my energy level has been almost instantaneous. It's awesome! It also seems to have pushed me out of a plateau I have been on for awhile. Yay!

Go Team!

But you're doing a great job at it Rosepetal!! Maybe its the accountability - it's easier to get things done when you have to report your own progress to others. The days get easier though, you gain more self control and self confidence and learn that you define the foods you're going to eat and when, not vice versa.

JENN - you paired up a good set here as buddies. We're cookin' (lo-cal stuff of course :-). I'm thinking I may just be regain a throne here!!

The hardest thing about losing weight for me is the fact that I want it NOW!!! I have a difficult time getting myself to not step on the scale every day and see if I am losing the weight. It seems impossible for me to just be happy with the fact that I am eating healthier than I have in my entire life....I am exercising everyday and learning to enjoy it....and I get to take some time to myself while I am doing this. I also find it hard to understand that I am gaining some personal power with this as well...I am an instantaneous kind of gal....and that is my addiction to food talking! So, I guess over all, the hardest thing about all of this is the test of my patience and sticking to it!

I don't know about nirvana ... But I do know that my head just naturally thinks differently than it ever has before. Case in point: Yodels (by Drakes, I think they have another name in the midwest). Even when I was a fit, active teen - I could consume Yodels by the case-full if given the chance. Then of course, with weight gain and all the attempts at weight-loss, it became a red-flag food. But if they were anywhere around, I'd find 'em and they'd be gone. Well today, I came home and there's a 2-pack of Yodels on the kitchen counter. They were my daughter's and she asked if I wanted one. Y'know what? Not a single iota of desire for it. It wasn't a "I can't have that - it's not good for me" thought; it was simply a "No interest at all in it" thought. It was kinda amazing.

So maybe it is nirvana. Of my choosing. I treat myself almost daily to either my Tootsie Pops or the M&M Peanuts. But never in an indulgent way. Just sort of a "it's a part of my routine 'overall healthy' eating". (Even if those 2 items, techinically, are not healthy on their own merit.)

Okay, enough rambling. I need sleep - tomorrow's a cardio-at-the-gym day, so I have to be up at 5:30am. G'night all!!

What is the hardest thing for you about losing/maintaining weight?

Good question! My initial reaction... nothing's been hard. I do have to stay focused/committed to getting in my water and fitness. I can easily slip with those two. Eating right... I've got that down. I'm one of the lucky ones. My hubby is supportive, although he himself has troubles staying focused, but he tells me to go workout, when he sees me start to waffle. Plus, my kids are a bit older and more independent. It would be far more challenging, if not impossible, if I had babies or toddlers at home.

JNN - Your right. Finding the time is challenging. So far, I've done it. As my work schedule builds over the next couple of months, it's going to get hard. I'll be so exhausted and coming home late. I'm hoping that when my home team (hubby) and my SP friends ride me, remind me, and challenge me to stay on track. (Treadmill track) LOL

I can't wait until I reach healthy living nirvana like Alan. That sounds delightful. One day I'll get there!

For me the hardest part is cardio. I find it monotonous so my motivation to get it done is low. To compensate, I now have a few workout buddies to help with motivation. Aside from that, I have the problems that every one has with cardio: finding the time, finding options that are enjoyable, and coordinating childcare so there is time to do cardio. But what I've learned through SP it is possible to get cardio in, multiple times/week, despite all of the deterrents. And with all that, I should note that I took my CARDIO rest day today. Wasn't gonna happen!

My bonus questions answer:

I have it so deeply stamped in my head that this is where I am and I want to stay that way, that none of this is hard. However, that said, the most difficult time is when I'm on the road traveling. Not that its hard, but it does require additional diligence and planning: finding hotels that have well-equipped gyms, packing snacks ahead of time for travel on planes, etc... Again, not hard. Just requires more work than when I'm in my usual day-to-day environment.

What is the hardest thing for you about losing/maintaining weight?

Fitting in the exercise time in my everyday routine. I am not a morning person but that is really the best time for me to exercise. I would rather exercise in the evening but that makes me feel guilty because I am taking time away from family especially my son. (Learning to compromise by using my lunch hour at work to exercise and setting my alarm for 4:30am - one of these days I will surprise myself by waking up and making my way to the gym at 5am).

Question: Do we post our answer to the random question on this thread? Or do we post it on the template?

ARRGGH! I had a bad eating "hour" last night. Totally gave into the cookies that were calling my name. It is frickin' surprising how fast the calories add up! Back on track today. I can't beat myself up for one hour of bad eating... when I have had so many good hours of good eating.

Sorry I haven't been around. I got the nasty flu, but it is gone now (hopefully!)

I haven't had a chance to catch up on the thread. Hopefully all your questions have been answered. If not, I will try to get on tonight. Sorry!

So now for a bonus question worth 5 points. You have until Sunday to answer. What is the hardest thing for you about losing/maintaining weight?

It's been a wild day today. Glad to see everyone posting such great results. I've only been able to get in 30 minutes of cardio, and I'm not sure, but I may take tonight as my "REST" day. I'm exhausted... more mentally, than physically. May just need to climb into bed, and start tomorrow off fresh.

Good news...with the craziness of the day, I still made good choices. Stayed away from the vending machines today, ate the crushed granola bar in my purse instead, and picked up a salad on my way home. The family went out to eat (fast food Mexican), but I stayed behind and ate my salad and an apple. I'll finish my water, and call it quits and feel good about today. It may not have been perfect, but there were "rays of goodness" there. Sometimes, you've got to look for them or be reminded that they're there.

My "challenge" with this challenge is fitting in all the exercise. Granted it was starting to frustrate me so I kind of over did it yesterday. I did an exercise video in the morning before work... walked to work... went to the gym after work and did way more then I am used to...and then walked home. I feel good but tired today. I guess it's finding that balance. I did not walk to work today but plan on going to the gym at lunchtime for a less strenuous workout.

Well, I have to say - and I'm not just saying this because I came up with the challenge - this is the first challenge which has really "challenged" the way I eat. Getting in 5 fruits/veggies has been huge - it's really transformational for me. One thing that has surprised me is the volume of food I'm eating now that I'm aiming for FULL servings to fruits/veggies. A full serving of blackberries is actually a whole cup. That's alot!. It feels like I'm eating a ton (I had to take out an actual dinner plate this morning for my omelet). Like 2 cups of chopped red peppers - that's ALOT of red peppers! I want to make this change stick!

I do admit that I've been a little hungry during this challenge. Probably just need to wait until my body adjusts to less fat in my diet - right? Another upside is that it's never been easier to reach my fiber number.

Hi Mistfreed. The actual posting topic is in the "General Discussion" forum of this team. If you go to the team's main page and scroll down to the messages, you should see the "General Discussion" forum, and one of the 1st two topics there should be the challenge posting one.

As for posting daily or weekly, I think (Jenn or JNN correct me here if I'm wrong) you can post at whatever pace you like, as long as you get all of the 1st week's postings in by the end of the week (and same for 2nd week), so that you can collect the 10 bonus points with your buddy.

Hope this helps.

In terms of posting - there needs to be a posting for every day but you don't have to do the actual posting every day. In other words, you can post for days past on any given day. Is that clear? It's OK if on Tuesday you post for Monday and Tuesday - for example. This helps people who don't aren't on their computer 24/7.

In terms of rest day, Alan, you got it right. If you take a rest day, you get all of the points that you would have received if you had done a full workout. So people should go back and adjust their totals for Sunday. I saw alot of people who posted a rest day but didn't take their points.

CAHIBO - I like your idea for getting points daily but I'm hesistant to change the rules after the challenge has started. Win this challenge and you can make up the next one.

JENN- Can the same prize be applied this time? If you win, you get to make up the challenge?

Help your buddies get the scoring and postings right!

Posting: How about an extra point each day, that both buddies post? And, an extra 10 points at the end of the challenge, if you consistently posted everyday?

Day 1 went well except for cardio. Did heavy cleaning but will log it as a rest day. Do we have to post everyday or just make sure every day's points are posted(post multiple days together)?? We have done both ways in the past - just wanted to clarify.

Another question about the challenge, based on looking at LORILEEHARRIS7's posting for today and the way we've done these in the past:

- on the rest days, do we get any points? I think the idea used to be that you got 5 points each for the cardio and ST on the rest day. Otherwise, there's no benefit to the rest day. You can just as easily choose not to work out on *any* day and get 0 points.

Good first day for me JNN. And thank you for the sneakers :-) ... I'm off and running (well, ellipticalling and cycling) with them!!

The real challenge for me is still just agreeing or disagreeing with the statement. I'm fighting with myself on whether to think of it as a black-and-white question, or one with answers that are shades of grey. So did I make the healthiest choices I could have made today? No. But I also made choices that were far better and healthier than the alternatives. And since I'm maintaining and really have to work to get in the number of calories I need (which I try to shoot between 2000-2500), I do include my daily tootsie pops and some other not-generally-considered-healthy choice. But then I think, *anything* in excess is bad, and anything in moderation is usually okay. In any event, I finally decided that I was in my range and my choices wound up with an overall good distribution of carbs, protein and fat ... so I decided I agreed with the statement. Tomorrow I may change my mind...

LOL - all this inner turmoil for one point :-)

How was everyone's first day on the challenge?

Getting in 5 servings for fruits/veggies was challenging for me on the planning front. I did it though. I was shocked how that shot up my fiber number for the day - makes sense though. Glad I had the foresight not to include fiber as a points item in the challenge!

Sorry about that everyone. I guess I should have slept in a little longer than I did today!

I can repost it here in challenges if it is easier for everyone. Vote tonight and I will move tomorrow if majority wants it moved.

Sorry again...I need to pay more attention.

Just noticed that the posting topic (and the template) are under the "General Discussion" forum.

Ok here it goes! We have an odd number right now so one of you got stuck with me. If anyone else joins before the end of the night, I will repair that poor soul ;)

Remember the buddy system is to help keep you motivated. Don't let your buddy down by not posting :)

Here is the buddy list (by the way, this was chosen completely randomly):

SSANFORD1 and DJMASTER
GRANNYD43 and ASHARON
RAINDOGMA and JNNSALAS
MISTFREED and CAHIBOMOM
LOSERTESS1 and LORILEEHARRIS7
4GAYATRI and SUSIE825
ROSEPETAL_NT and ALANOFLINY
TIZJUSTMEE you are stuck with me for now unless we have someone else join tonight.

Please let me know if I am missing anyone!

I will get the template posted tonight (or maybe first thing in the morning). Don't forget to check in on this thread every day. Remember I will be assigning random bonus questions. If anyone has any ideas for bonus questions, please email me :)

Let the games begin (well tomorrow morning anyway!)

This will be great... look at all the new faces that are coming out to play. Yes, I called it "play". This group has alot of fun with our challenges. Hope everyone's ready.

JNN - Keeping with Alan's analogy, and since I used to live in Indy for 17 years, I only think it's fitting that you get to be Mary Hulman-George.

But first... It's Jim Nabor singing "Back Home In Indiana"

You are right....at the end of the day I do know if I just did the 90 minutes of workout to get the points or if I really earned it. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have to post ....ran 10 min/mile..or something like that.

Thanks for the clarification JNN. Yes, I also realized that agreeing with the statement is subjective and personal. Regardless of the points, it's an excellent challenge item, but we really should be thinking about everything we put in our mouth - not just focusing on particular nutritional aspects.

That said, I guess being in maintenance mode makes that statement a wee bit easier for me. I have my daily tootsie pops or M&M peanuts. Am I mindful of that? Yup. Is it a "healthy" choice? Probably not. But I also look at it that a) I'm not overdoing them (okay, sometimes I am :-), and b) when I'm burning up 1200+ calories/day in exercise, I can use the extra calories, because too *few* calories eaten (relative to our body's needs) is not necessarily a healthy choice either.

Anyway, enough rambling ... looking forward to Day 1.

(And grateful that I'm not excluded from the challenge as a team lead - several other teams that I lead have set down rules that prohibit the leaders from winning the challenge)

I'm now thinking number 3 should be worth 5 pts. Because if you can honestly say that at the end of the day, you deserve 5 points!

As I look back at past challenges, I was so focused on getting my carb number, protein number, and calorie number within range I wasn't really focusing on the quality of all of my foods.

You need to define what's light/moderate or intense for you. Its going to be different for every person.

Same thing for the point that says "I ate mindful and made healthy choices". That's going to be a personal assessment.

I put these two items in the challenge because being honest with myself is something I need to keep working on in my quest to be healthy.

Does that make sense?

Count me in!! JNN - you thought up a really great one here and I do thank you for not including sodium :-)

Quick question: Define light vs heavy exertion. Not that it matters, I put in enough cardio each day that I'll get my points, but I'm curious, because what's "light" to one person may be "heavy" to someone else.

Let the games begin!!

Yes, please! I need a good challenge... but I really need a good partner to help me keep on track. I like this Buddy rule. Bring it on!

Alright! It has been awhile. As promised, here is a challenge from JNNSALAS, the winner of our last challenge. Please sign up by Saturday at midnight. Challenge will start Sunday March 1 and will run through Saturday March 14th (2 weeks). If you would like to participate, please check out the rules below and post in this thread that you are in. I will post another thread for daily postings.

1. Eat within your calorie range. 5 points.

2. Eat 5 servings of fruit and/or veggies. Serving portions are noted in this article - www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti
on
_articles.asp?id=177
5 points if all five are eaten.

3. 1 point if you agree with this statement :"Today I was mindful of what I ate and only made healthy choices".

4. 5 strength training exercises or 1 sparkpeople strength training video. 1 rest day/week. 5 points.

5. Cardio. 1 point for every 15 minutes of light to moderate intensity exercise. 2 points for every 15 minutes of high intensity exercise. 1 rest day/week. Up to 6 point per day.

6. For this challenge, everyone who signs up will be paired with a buddy. If you and your buddy both log in to report on the challenge every day of each week, you get an extra 10 bonus points at the end of the week (so total 20 for the whole challenge). I will have buddies assigned as early as possible.

7. Random bonus questions with random points values posted to the chat thread with instructions.

Hope to see a great turn out!
