I will also extend my congrats to everyone on keeping up with the challenge! Wow - that was a hard one to keep up with the tracking - I think we all got busy at the same time. Keep up the good work!

Congrats to everyone who saw this challenge through to the end. I was not one of them, but I do look forward to bowing humbly before the winner. (And then getting psyched to wipe up on the next challenge :-)

Anyway... good to be home. The hardest part of the challenge (and my downfall) really was just the lack of effort on my part to track everything. The exercise was easy to track. The food, not so much. Now that I'm home ... looking forward to just getting back on track...

... and of course, the next challenge!!

I won't be around much this weekend. My hubby is graduating with his second Masters. I will get the challenge results out as soon as I can though. Have a great last challenge day. You rock!

I'm going down in flames today. No exercise. No time... and I was on a roll this week. May need to consider doubling up this weekend. I'll let you know how I do. Hope the rest of you are hanging in there, and going out in a blaze of glory.

Yah - Congrats on your blood pressure management. It's amazing how even just a little bit of weight loss has an impact.

I've used my rest days for Cardio three days in a row (Sun, Mon, and Tues) since I've been so busy. Not the greatest strategy but I'm putting it out there that I'm going to try to hit my cardio points now for the last 4 days of the challenge.

Go team!

I love that you guys continue to post the this is helping drop your bp. I'm hopeful. Would it be ironic to tell you my bp readings for yesterday and today were 138/82. Strange, uh? (Too bad there's not a place to record these readings along with your nutrition or fitness. Of course, I could just setup a spreadsheet of my own. Too simple...) {{Chuckling}}

Just like Jenn and Alan....my blood pressure reading has dropped in the the last 4 months. My last visit to the doctor was in November and I had lost my first 10lbs. I am still on medication but if I continue to improve ...I may get to quit it.

Having more energy and feeling good about myself is great!

Oh to add something unique to the discussion.

Unlike Jenn and Alan, I would LOVE to say that my high blood pressure has dropped over the past 4 months, but it's not happening. I'm not on drugs, but should be. Ironically, back in November, I went specifically for that reason. I was getting 170/110 readings... but usually getting 160/100. AND..of course, when the appointment came, my BP was 138/82. Imagine my surprise. Well, that's not usual, and so I put off calling the DR. again hoping that I would see the benefit of a healthier lifestyle. (Any of SP's that are in the medical field, feel free to kick my butt. I know...it's way too high.)

Like JNN, I've enjoyed and marveled in the fact that I can wear clothing that I've had in my closet for years. People continually ask me if I've lost alot of weight, because I look great. The comments come in unexpected situations, and are simply wonderful. It's provides the energy to continue, knowing that I've done this... and can continue. It's a wonderful feeling.

I sincerly wish the same for all SP's out there that are trying to do the same thing. Keep going.. It pays off.

Bonus #4 (best NSV):

Hmmmm.... since I've been on SP? Hard to say, since I'd achieved the significant NSVs before getting here. I suppose, much to my wife's chagrine, is the number of people (mostly women, and of them, mostly friends, but sometimes strangers) who have been telling me how good I look.

Now, superficial NSVs aside, mine is similar to Jenn's: I went from having every co-morbidity imaginable (blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes, reflux) and a boat-load of medications to treat them, to just the diabetes - and that's gone from 3 oral meds (twice daily) and insulin, to 1 oral med, once a day.

Talk about busy... My saturday was so weird! I was in another universe all day - one that didn't even know that Sparkpeople existed! I completely and honestly just forgot about all of my Spark commitments (bootcamp vid, cardio, weights, logging my food) - just completely forgot! I went to bed that night and it occured to me. Luckily I took mental stock of what I ate that day and was able to log it on Sunday. Anyway - we must all be on the same wave because I've been so crazy busy too - so don't think I'm not thinking of all of my spark friends!

Bonus - My best non-scale measurable achievement has been ... reclaiming my skinny wardrobe! Like the items in my closet that were still hanging there but clearly didn't fit - now FIT! And fit really well. It's awesome. It's like having a whole new waredrobe without having to spend any money.

Anise....Welcome back!!! It's great that you're still on track. You've done so great!! I hear you on the busy job. It can get crazy. Last I remember, and forgive me if I've got it wrong, you had two new jobs there as we headed into the New Year. How's everything working out? Glad you got a break to say hello to everyone. You were missed.

You guys are all doing great! How about 1 more bonus. For 10 points, what has been the best NSV (non-scale victory) you have had since your time here? You have until the end of the challenge Saturday at midnight to post your answer.

For example, my answer to this would be that my blood pressure went down without having to start the medication I was on the brink of having to have.

been busy lately... didn't even have time to post on spark... finally got a break bcos of chinese new year and found out that i haven't posted for a whole week...

anyway, hope it's not too late for the bonus question:
what i have learnt from my weight loss journey is that loosing weight is not that hard... all i need is the motivation to get me moving... I work with computers and on a daily basis, I'm in front of the computer minimum nine hours... and that is on a slow day... i work at home so unless i need something, i hardly go out... basically, i led a very sedentary lifestyle... but now, because of spark and its many group created challenges and whatever competitive streak that is in me, i am learning ways to push myself to be more active in life... i'm also learning a great deal on how to eat better and the kind of food i should avoid... so basically, if i keep doing what i'm doing right now, loosing weight doesn't sound too hard...

Didn't get my cardio in today. Too many family commitments (i.e., church, taught sunday school, choir concert, basketball game, grocery shopping, long distance phone call from my sister). You guys know what I'm talking about. We all have busy lives and too many commitments, at times. And, mine simply got in the way today.

But, I am pleased with myself...You know it's the little choices that we have to celebrate. Since the family took the organist out for lunch before the choir concert, I put a real dent in my calorie intake. To compensate, for dinner, the rest of the family ate ravioli and I had a big bowl of steam veggies. Yes... I stayed in my calorie range. One small success...I'll take it!!

And by the way - if you are a high fiber bar person -I HIGHLY recommend Kellogg's new version call "Fiber Plus". They are higher in fiber than the Fiber One bars and even more delicious IMHO. The only problem with these is that it makes it easier to go OVER your fiber range for the day.

My turn. Bonus question: What have I learned?

Nike's slogan "Just Do It" has a lot of merit. Excuses are easy. "Doing it" just always seems to be hard, but it really isn't. I think excuses make it easy so that we don't have to *rationalize why we're "doing it."* To actually eat a smaller portion, or make the right food choices, or get on the treadmill or bike or just the ground walking/running - that's really easy. It's simply a mattter of "just do it."

I've stopped making excuses. I just do it. And when I don't, I don't sit and fret or rationalize why I didn't. I just go back and start to "just do it" again.

Bonus Question: What have I learned?

There has been no single earth-shattering lesson learned... but, many small meaningful nuggets that's made all the difference: (a) learned to eat within my calorie range, (b) learned that I can build exercise into my daily routine, and survive it, (c) learned to love and not be intimidated by strength exercises, and most importantly (d) learned that you can have fun doing this, (e) need to keep positive and surround yourself with positive people, and (f) anyone can do this... I'm like any of you out there, and I'm doing this. YOU CAN TOO!!!!! There's no magic in it. Just a commitment to yourself, that will make you feel better about yourself.

Keep on pluggin' away, and it goes away!!! And, you become stronger in so many ways.

I'm Back.. Didn't mean to just up and disappear. My DH & I have been in New Orleans attending a business convention. I thought I'd have access to a computer, but no go. I didn't have much flexibility. Meals were pre-planned, but I did my best. Stayed away from the plethora of desserts, and stuck with the salads and veggies as much as I could. Even got in my exercise most days... either walking the French Quarter for about 4 hours yesterday, or 30 minutes on an elliptical.

I have to admit, the best part of the convention (which was one of my personal goals), was having numerous people comment on how great I looked and ask if I lost weight since the last time they saw me. "Yes, sir... 25+ pounds since August, and I've had fun losing it." It was a great feeling... like Cinderella.

I'm planning on weighing in tomorrow, and getting back to business... and posting daily.

THIS IS A PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT!

If you're going out to eat Japanese tonight or bringing home grocery store sushi, think twice before getting a seaweed salad. While low in calories, one serving as 3100 grams of sodium! My little running man on my tracker nearly had a heart attack right then and there!

I knew soy sauce was loaded with sodium. Guess I didn't know that my seaweed salad was floating in it.

Live and learn!

I don't even know how to react to those lost napkins... I think I actually feel giddy that we may have a chance! Alan - don't give up just yet. I have a feeling you might still have a chance of placing :)

Bonus: What to choose! I've learned so much since starting SP. I've learned how to eat so I'm staying in my ranges and not being hungry. I've learned about the power of enrolling other people in your weight loss journey. I've learned that I feel so much better when I'm getting enough fiber. I've learned that I can find time to exercise if I really want to. I've learned that my back problems are less frequent if I keep up with my core exercises.

hmmm...Alan are you sure you just didn't want to create the next challenge ;)

What? You want another bonus?? Ok for a whopping 20 points...tell us one surprising thing you have learned along your journey since August (or longer if you have been working it since before SP). This could be about yourself, your aha moment, something you learned about exercise or food.

The king is dead, love live the, um, queen?! I'm assuming it will be a queen, since there aren't too many guys here (or if there are, you're not out here being active - c'mon guys!!).

Anyway, I'm finally home. For 4 days now. And totally bummed that in packing/unpacking/cleaning/etc... my nutrition scraps of paper, napkins, etc... have been lost forever. So there's no way for me to recreate from memory everything I've had in the past few days.

So ... I am humbly bowing out from any chance of winning from the competitive perspective. I'll get back to daily posting, and supporting (and occasionally chiding) others here. I'm challenging myself now. Including the need to remember to log everything into my PDA and not rely on napkins, or anything that appears disposable. (No one in my house would dare dispose of my PDA or phone, accidentally or otherwise :-)

Hope everyone had a successful week. Mine really was okay. I found the time for my 2.5 hours of overall exercise (the 2 hours of cardio and 30+ minutes of strength training) each day. But I can guarantee I'd have gone over my sodium each day, probably didn't get enough fiber, and the calories ... well... JNN, there were indeed a few nights of Guinness and assorted traditional Englinsh pub fare. The scale also reflects it. So it's back to this challenge just for the self-gratification...

... and, lol, to basically win or tie each daily posting amount. Gotta keep you folks sharp too!!

Catch you later!!

Alan

Hi teammates!! Well, I'm back from London, but now I'm in Syracuse. All goes well, except for having enough time to post my challenge results, blog, or anything else. I've got scraps of paper in my laptop-bag with scribbles of what I ate each meal for the past couple of days, which I still haven't had a chance to transcribe yet into SP.

But I will ... hopefully a little bit tonight and the rest tomorrow. But by Monday, with certainty.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Hi Cahibomom... actually, i don't have any trouble eating within my calorie range... i just don't eat within my protein, carb, fiber, etc range... since joining this challenge, I have definitely been watching what i eat more closely... meeting my fiber goal is the hardest

ANISE... What difference a week makes!!! You posted a blog on 1/6 talking about your calorie intake, etc. Since then, you've been posting well within your ranges on a daily basis. EXCELLENT!!! I have to admit, that is one thing these challenges have taught me... how to eat and eat right. It looks like it paying off for you. Although your tracker doesn't show any movement, your posts indicate that you've lost 12 lbs.

Looks like this is paying off for you!!! Keep up the great work... and, keep posting.

I haven't posted since last week and need to get back to it. I didn't track my nutrition over the week-end. Hurt my hip last week by overdoing it and haven't exercised since last Wednesday. I spoke with a fitness trainer last night and she recommended some exercise that would not aggravate my hip. Tonight I go to the gym. Also, last night I spoke with my nutritionist and she lowered my fiber range; said it was set too high. She looked over my most recent blood work and said every thing looked fine. I feel a little better about what I am eating. I really like the challenges because they make me more aware of what I am doing.

I got my 90 minutes in on the treadmill today, but had to slow it down and drop the incline. I'm finding that my knees and hips are aching at work. If I sit too long at my desk, when I get up I walk like a nursing home occupant. It's not a pretty sight for about 10 minutes.

I just meant inactive in our team. They may be active elsewhere and they may not come back, but maybe just tell them about our challenges, or look and see what others are saying :)

Hi Jenn - as you read in the blog, I made it here, although in a rather long, frustrating manner.

So far so good though. Business is going fine. My hotel is about a mile from my office, so I get a decent walk in both ways (while carrying about 25lbs of laptop and papers on my back). And I took a lunchtime walk in the English rain. Looking forward to the end of the workday to get back to the hotel, get into the gym, and crash for the night.

I'll write more later (probably blog it so everyone on assorted teams can read it).

Alan

Btw... the sodium will kill my points this week. While I'm eating healthy meals, they are in restaurants, and I'm pretty sure the dishes are not low sodium.

Good idea for a challenge! As I left messages I thought to myself - wow - this would really kick me in the butt to get back involved. Let's hope it works!

As for Alan, how are the fish and chips? Haven't tried them yet? OH, YOU MUST! It's the best with a TON of SALT (he, he, he). (I'm setting such a bad SparkExample - it's shameful - oh well - I know its just going to make Alan stick to his plan even more).

Jenn, It was great to "look back" and find people that have previously participated in team challenges or used their nutrition tracker, but fallen off. I'd love to see them back. The team chat threads and challenges are so much fun and a great way to get to know other people. It's a great support network. Hate for them to miss out.

Here's who I approahed, in hopes of seeing them more often: Mommaashleyal; Cyndy77297; Whippleluv; Fatty7-7-7: Brimn07

Mistfreed we are definately glad you decided to join the challenge and I think you have already won by focusing on yourself and being healthy.

Alan- have a great trip! Hopefully you can make it out before the snow :)

Ok, sounds like it is time for a new bonus. For 2 points each (up to 10 points) go to a non-active team member's Spark page and invite them back to the team. Come back and post which team mates pages you posted on. Let them know that we are still cheering them on! You have until Wed at midnight (your own time zone) to come back and post their names. If you are uncomfortable posting names here, you can send me an email and give me the names there and just post that you emailed me :)

I just wanted to say...
I never did a challenge before and the only reason I did this one was to help me get back on track. I was doing really well, then I went to Germany where I didn't have internet and when I came back MANY terrible things happen and all of a sudden it was almost a month later and I still hadn't logged on to sparkpeople. I know I am not going to be the winner of this challenge, but I am winning because I have been constantly logging in my food and exercises since it started. Challenges are great! and I am telling all my friends that are using sparkpeople about them! Also, I would like to wish Alan luck keeping up while vacationing in Europe...It is Hard!
Thanks everyone for your support!

Okay, the time has come to where we separate the Alan-man from the Alan-boy. I'm headed off to London tonight (assuming the flight leaves, given the alleged snowstorm we're supposed to get just hours before my departure time).

So it will be a challenge: the allure of business trips: fine food and lodging and entertaintment (including food), versus the challenge and staying true to my current healthy lifestyle.

I am going to try and enjoy one meal each day. But at the same time, I don't want to completely fall out of this challenge, so, I've also packed for my trip: my kitchen scale and a set of measuring cups, Slimfast and South Beach bars, Fibre One cereal. My trainer at my gym even wrote out a strength training routine for me on the assumptions that the only equipment I'll have access to (besides cardio) are dumbbells. I'm going to miss my machines.

Anyway, I don't know how much posting I'll be doing this week, but I will be posting my challenge template.

Have a great week everyone. Good luck to all!!

Or the Fiber One yogurt from Yoplait. Each 4-ounce cup contains 5 grams of fiber -- 20 percent of the recommended Daily Value.

I have to admit, my body is aching more than ever. I'm not sure why. Could it be the combination of a new exciting & very competitive New Year/New You Challenge... in combination with Coach Nicole's Bootcamp Challenge? Maybe...just maybe. Or,is it the aches and pains before my body sheds a couple of pounds. Either way, I could go for a soak in a hot tub and a good body massage. Oh, to dream.....

I got nailed by Subway today too! I got a sub that had low calories but only later realized that it had about half of my daily sodium intake.

I really went over on my sodium yesterday and today I checked and it was just as I thought. I ate lunch at Subway and between the soup and mini ham sub I had almost all of my days sodium without eating anything else and we all know that wasn't going to happen.

While on vacation, my husband and I went to an Afghanistan Restaurant. Last night we (we because I am working on this cooking thing but he is the cook) tried to imitate the dish that he had in a healthy way and it was SO good. It is a lentil and ground turkey patty (instead of lamb) on a bed of hashed brown potatoes (home made with very little oil) with a yogurt sauce (fat free). I was so surprised how good and healthy it was!

See the recipe chat thread if your interested in trying the butternut squash chili. The base recipe is on SRecipe.com; however, like all soups I personally make, I start with the basic ingredients and modify it as I go.

The church chili dinner was canceled tonight due to weather. My family wasn't disappointed. We had the chili all to ourselves. No complaints were heard from the peanut gallery. All three of them finished off their bowls.

Before I adopted my current wholesome and almost puritanical lifestyle in the rolling hills of Wisconsin, I was a big city girl. I grew up in Montreal, went to schools on the East Coast and therefore had alot of friends to visit "in the City". I do remember a few loft parties. I'm sure there are many more that I've forgotten ;).

We went to an Ethiopian restaurant (first time..)last weekend. The food was really good and the vegetarian dishes we had were quite healthy. We tried Buticha (chickpea dip), Shiro Wot (split peas),Salata (salad)and Wot (split red lentil simmered in sauce)with Injera (kind of bread).
Also tried the stability ball for the first time yesterday...managed not to fall off!

this is for the bonus points:

I tried this new gym ball. My dad bought this new one cos he had an accident with the old one. The ball suffered terribly. Anyway, this one is a bit bigger adn it is also some sort of massage ball since it has like little knobbly surface. It felt a bit weird using it the first time because I can feel stuff poking at me but after a while I kinda got used to it. Although since the ball is heavier, it is harder for me to do exercise that requires me to lift the ball like the clamshell crunch or the pendulum. That'll be a challenge.

Excellent JNN. Um, what's the membership phobia? (I can understand the guilt - paying and then never using it ... ahh... never mind, just figured out the phobia: paying and then never using it!! :-)

Ummm... okay, time for you to 'fess up btw. I'm pretty sure you're not from NY (at least aren't there now). How would you know what a soho loft looks like?!

Actually, anonymity being what so many people love about the internet, no need to actually 'fess up if you don't want to :-)

Yes, CAHIBOMOM, please post the recipe (you can get points too for it y'know :-) for the squash chili. I love chili, and if you can hide vegetables (other than the usual tomato and onion) in it - i.e. something for me to eat aside from V-8 - I'm all for hearing about it!!

I did something really new and really out of my comfort zone today - I actually stepped foot in a gym! I hadn't worked out in an actual gym since around 2002 probably. So I'm considering this new because a) it's been forever and b) I actually worked out at a gym that I had never been to before. I didn't really intend to but today my walking buddy pointed out that there was deathly black ice outside and that we should try working out inside. They just built this beautiful new community center near my house and you don't have to commit to a membership to use the workout room (it's just $2/pop). I really think my problem with gyms is the membership phobia/guilt. So this is going to work out perfectly, I think. The building is an old iron works building that they completely renovated so it felt like a SOHO loft. As always, my walking buddy and I jabbered away between catching our breath and soon enough we had finished our hour treadmill workout (at 5% incline and 20 min mile we burned 600 cals, wow!).

CAHIBO - Your chili sounds wonderful. I'm going to try it. And I'm going to try the cordon bleu.

I've personally been on a brown fried rice kick lately. I've managed to perfect it with little/no oil but tons of taste (the benefits of having a Thai au pair live with us!).

Bonus Reply: THING 1 & THING 2... and THING 3 thrown in for good measure.

THING 1: We made spaghetti for supper - a real family favorite. However, instead of pasta, I had mine on spaghetti squash and steamed grated zucchini with marinara sauce and parmesan cheese on it. Not bad, actually it was pretty good....very filling.

THING 2: I purchased a stability ball today. Wondering if I need to wear a helmet the first time I use it. (Opinions/advice anyone???)

THING 3: For the first time, I made Butternut Squash Chili yesterday, and the family loved it. Don't turn your noses up....It doesn't EVEN taste like there's squash in it. I'm planning on taking it to a church pitch-in tomorrow night if the weather cooperates. I'm hoping to win the chili cookoff this year ... entering in the "new & unusual" category.

Woohoo, way to go Alan :)

I started the Couch Potato to 5K program today. I think I started it before, so not real sure that is new...

I am about to eat a recipe from Sparkrecipes.com though. I will have to tell you how I like that after I eat it, but it smells wonderful!

Bonus question reply:

I'm something of a creature-of-habit, so things I like I stick with, and things I don't like - well, I usually get around to trying them, but if its a substitute for something I *do* like, why bother?

Well, my "what did I try new today?" was a piece of cardio equipment - an elliptical trainer manufactured by StarTac. (I wish I knew the model number, this would make a good product review). My gym has Precor and StarTac equipment. I *love* the Precor, never been a big fan of StarTac. Well, normally, if the Precor ellipticals are in use, I'll wait patiently for it - or skip it altogether (even if the StarTac is available). Today was overly crowded and the Precor was in use, so I decided to try the StarTac.

Can't say I liked it. The motion didn't feel as smooth as the Precor; in fact my knees were bothering me afterwards. I found the display too small. On the good side, it has a nice little fan on the control unit which blows directly on your face, and I liked that the heart-rate grips were on the ellipticals moving handles, so I could keep my arms moving and still get my pulse.

But ... bottom line ... if I don't like the way it felt and thought it was doing something to my knees, I can't say I really liked it.

But I did try something new :-)

Yeah, well... if you think I enjoyed having the apricots instead of the V8 to stay in range, you'd be mistaken. I like apricots, but I LOVE my V8. Couldn't help it though - my wife cooked a dinner (that I happen to love) made with canned soup, which is just a sodium killer. As little as I ate of it, it still was the sodium that could've been another 8oz glass of lo-sodium v8.

But yes, I'm off to a good start (and I see JNNSALAS is too as I type this). Let the games continue!! :-)

Uhoh...I see Alan got his sodium points today. You are all in trouble ;)

Ok first bonus. You have until Wed at midnight (your time zone) to post for 10 extra bonus points. This shouldn't even be that hard :) Try something new and come here and tell us what you tried and what you thought of it. Could be a new veggie or fruit. Could be a new exercise. I will leave that up to you. Just get out there and try something. :)

I've been actually reading the first post and catching up on the rest and saw that you were going to post the template later. It does help to read everything first.

I am in, and it will be my first challenge also. Hopefully I can keep up! I'm starting a new job next week, and have a feeling that will disrupt my eating a bit. Will be nice to have a reason to keep the focus!

Fresh fruits/veggies will be a challenge of sorts -- getting variety into my meal plan, so I don't get bored. I'm in a rute eating alot of broccoli, zucchini, and spaghetti squash. For Christmas, one of my customers sent a HUGE box of Florida oranges to me. I'll try to work those in before they go bad too.

Hmmm Alan, you said that last challenge too. I think he is trying to psych you all out ;)

This time around, I am counting any fruits and veggies you want to eat. Alan is correct with the black beans though. For the first challenge it was too confusing for everyone with limiting it to fresh or frozen. I don't know about you, but getting fresh veggies here in January is no easy feat!

I will be posting the template and the thread to post on tomorrow night and posting will start Sunday. Hope everyone is getting ready!
