I am glad I took part in this challenge. Learnt a lot about tracking my nutrition and all the little things that add up in the end. I am a vegetarian and I now know that I have to get my protein every day.....it was a struggle. And Sodium....had no idea how easy it is to go over the limit with everyday food and I am not talking about fast food!

To my teammates in this challenge -

PHEW! We did it! Man, that was alot of work tracking and logging and watching all of those totals everyday AND WE DID IT! It was a great comfort to me to see all of my challenge partners posting every day. I'm amazed and impressed at all of our dedication and honesty in our postings. Hopefully, people are seeing real results in their weigh-ins, or inches or energy or motivation or some combination of all of the above.

We're awesome. Let's just be reals. Go Team Learning the Basics!

So I really sucked for the last THREE days. I have been working over 12 hours a day all week to get through an event that happened today, so it should get better. Today I even ate McDonalds! I haven't had that in years, but it was what I was given so it was that or starve, and it wouldn't look nice for my tummy to growl while handing out nametags! I tried throughout the week to make smart choices, but I still feel like a loser for not tracking anything. Sorry - I'm rambling, thanks for listening.

changes on your exercise page will change your calorie range. The more you exercise, the more calories you need :) Great incentive to exercise ;)

Hello SP team members. It's been a rewarding two weeks!! But, I'm slightly confused and need to confirm how or what caused my goals (calories, fat, protein, fiber, etc.) to change on my nutrition page. I did weigh myself in and dropped 2 pounds. Did that result in the goals changing? Half way through the challenge I noticed this so I'm not sure what happened. Please help. Thanks!

Side note -- I agree about checking out the weekly reports. It puts everything into perspective and makes me see the areas I need to improve. I was doing very poorly on sodium and it made me realize I need to cut back.

I had quite the day. Before I started SP, I bought these tickets to a chocolate tasting at an exclusive chocolatier. The tickets are actually really hard to get. Before I started my day, I plugged in 9 truffles to reserve the calories but as the day wore on I needed to eat more regular food so I dropped my truffles to 7.5. So I made sure I had room for 7.5 truffles, got to the tasting, and they only offered a whopping 3 truffles and a bit of raw chocolate. Needless to say, when I got home, I had a proper meal! I was still over on fat which I planned for so I let myself go over fiber to compensate. I don't even though if that makes good nutritional sense but that was my logic. I figured I need more fiber to push the extra fat through my system.

It's amazing what posting daily does for your health and fitness. You should check out your weekly reports! Seeing my results in graph form is pretty awesome... and shows areas I need to work on lol And with my SP team, it won't be a problem. Thanx guys.

You have to go back to the page where it asks you how many lbs/week you want to lose, how many lbs you want to lose, and how quickly you want to do it. Go to MY TOOLS then to START. Then look down the left column (it's orange) and at the bottom there is a section called "MY GOALS". That's where you have to put the changes

This is just my opinion, but 1200 calories a day sounds VERY EXTREME given your current weight (extreme for anyone in my opinion). I'm thinking you have something entered incorrectly.

Good luck!

Help!!

I feel like a cheater. I started off good on this challenge and got most of my points to begin with, then I noticed that my calories are not where I thought they were. I thought when I signed up it put me on a 1200 - 1500 calorie a day program. I noticed on my reports it has me at 1600 - 1900. I went in and changed my goals back to the 1200 a couple of days ago. Then, I fell off the wagon. I have had a rough week and have done nothing, but I just logged in, and my calories are back at the 1600 range again. What am I doing wrong? Does the system pick what my range I should be? Am I not saving something? I am just really confused.....

Here are some complex carb/protein ideas of snacks or mini-meals.

apple slices with low fat nut butter
part-skim mozzerella string cheese and whole grain crackers
Yoghurt and low fat granola
whole grain rice cake with a few almonds on the side
Boiled egg and whole wheat toast
turkey breast slices on WASA bread
Look for nutrition bars that combine complex carbs and protein (I like Fiber One bars)

I'm sure there are more combinations that would work.

Thanx for the support JNNSALAS and BRIMN07. Today was much better. Yes, I reminded myself to stop and eat and did not listen to the inner voice saying 'just one more thing....'lol. Good idea bout the snacks. Will also get wholegrain bread/crackers and a healthy spread for quick food on the go. Am really good at reading labels now. Thanks Jen for that.
I've set times for myself to eat, to get into a routine - as I now know what the consequences are. What's a quick good complex carb and protein? Cheers team - Tricia

Whew! All caught up on tracking and it only took me all night ;)

Everyone is doing awesome. Only 4 more days in the challenge so keep it up.

If everyone could have their final postings done by Sunday at noon that would be awesome. Then I can get the scores all tallied and the winners announced.

Thanks!

I keep getting all of my points for the day except for sodium. I just actually read the nutritional information for Fish Sauce (I do alot of Thai cooking). OMG! 1 tbps has about 500 grams of sodium. Geesh! I had no idea. This Learning the Basics challenge is really opening my eyes to the amount of sodium I'm consuming.

My two cents... I have a drawer at work with healthy snacks in case I get hungry between meals. I don't need to think about what I should eat. I know what is in the drawer is ok. If I get home from work sometime my husband drags me back out to do errands. I always get hungry at that time of day so I grab an apple or other fruit quick as I run back out the door. If I am out starving then I am likely to grab something quick that is definitely not healthy.
So I guess long story short plan ahead. Healthy snacks are a good way to avoid the binges.

Hope this helps!

Everyone work together we can do it!

LYKIN - Here are some thoughts on binging. Your first line of attack is to try to prevent the binging in the first place. That means guzzling a ton of water and forcing yourself to eat every 2-3 hours. And when you do eat, eat both a complex carb and a protein so that you'll feel full longer.

If you've waiting too long and you are about to binge or if you are in the middle of a binge, log into your computer and post under the Panic Button section. Make yourself do it. Hopefully someone will respond quickly. Lastly, I challenge you to post every day on the Learning the Basics Daily chit chat and let us know how you're doing on the binging. I want to hear everything. How you managed to forgo binging, if you did binge, what you're trying to do to get back on track! If you can't get to a computer, just drop everything and physically move away from the food. That means putting on your jacket and leaving the house if you need to!

These are just some ideas from someone who has alot of weight to lose so take them for what they are worth!

Most importantly - YOU CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TOO! Go team!

Trish - that's crazy about the sampler. It's a little sick when you think about it, right? I hate eating out, and I pretty much had to all weekend... I actually feel a little sick from eating crap all weekend... I didn't eat too much, so I just ended up hungry most of the day and then queasy from eating over processed crapola! I'm gonna have to figure that all out though b/c it's not like I can plan to eat at home all the time, I'm away too much for that. I'm rambling, sorry. Good luck tomorrow Trish, and whole team!

Well, went way over today. Looked up the calories on TGIF's Jack Daniels Tower Sampler AFTER I got home: 2,330 calories. Glad that my friend and I split it ... can you believe they call this a sampler? Tomorrow's a new day!

Thank you, JNNSALAS. I have read the article you suggested and I am going to work on my fibre intake this week. I just missed my limit today. But tomorrow is a new day and I now feel more motivated to change what I am doing since you will know if I don't!!!!!! LOL!!!!!
I know what you mean about nachos, they are irresistable. I agree after midnight is a new day!!!! I hope you made it through the rest of your day with enough to eat. Have a good day.

EXPAT - There's a really good article on SP about why it's not good to get too much fiber. The jist of it is that food passes through you too quickly and some key nutrients can't get absorbed. Here's the link: https://www.sparkpeople.com/community/ask_t
he_experts.asp?q=66

I'm also having a harder week this week since I've had to eat out quite a bit. I was performing last night and some couple in the first row ordered nachos. Those nachos tortured me my whole performance! They apparently tortured most of the cast since they ordered some after the show. It was after midnight so I added the nachos to my nutrition tracker this morning (NO FIBBING, right?). It's 9:51AM on Saturday, I've blown my sodium number for the day, and I've consumed half my calories for the day! That's OK though. I know I can still manage with the remaining calories I have left for the day. I'm confident and determined I'll get all of my points for the day (minus the sodium).

It's Saturday! Have a great day everyone!

GO TEAM!

I also have had two very bad days, Thursday and Friday. Thursday was stress related and I was self indulgent then Friday was my son's birthday and I ate the ice cream we had instead of cake. Today, Saturday, was much better, I have recovered from my Thursday upset and I scored 5 points in every category. That is if I can count 1/4 of a cup of strawberries as 1 fruit. It was all I had left!!!
I am determined to stay focused for the second week of the challenge. I do have a problem with my fibre limit, though. I like to eat Kellog's All Bran after working out/for lunch. I have alrady eaten a portion for breakfast. This brings me above the acceptable range but eating it with low fat plain yoghurt and strawberries is a good, healthy, low fat combination that keeps me satisfied for longer. I know I need to adapt this part of my diet to score points but I am finding I really don't want to!!!! Now that I have written that down I am hoping I will come to my senses and change what I am eating!!!!
I feel good about today, I hope everyone else is feeling good too.

Hi All.
I've noticed that the last 3 days have been a shocker for me. STORY: Had a fundraiser for my children's primary school (Kindy to Yr 6) on Fri and it was full on Thursday and Friday.
My nutrition suffered and cos I wasn't posting on time (i.e. entering and reviewing for the day) it kinda snowballed, so reigning myself in again and am learning the consequences of being a 'busy mum who doesn't eat or drink right'.
I can't wait for tomorrow. I'm gonna get 60pts:).
Cheers Tricia

Jenn - I was like Brim & used the example's limits versus what is on my nutrition page.
I already posted for today so I'll change it tomorrow.
I'm glad we have the chit chat board.

Alright, so somebody already answered my question. For the life of me I could not figure out how to track my sodium and fibre but it's up there now. Question though, does moving furniture around count as excercise since I'm doing it all on my own?

Believe in yourself and you can do anything.

Hi Brim,

What you need to do is substitute the figures on your nutritional & fitness tracking pages for what Jenn put in the example. Then you compare those figures with what you had for that day and decide if you get the points or not.

Hope this helps.

God Bless,

Hi Jenn,

I went to the Doctor this morning and I need to be on a low fat diet due to my cholestoral. How can I adjust that for our challange and still get the points??

Also, how do I find the goals for stage 2 of the SparkDiet?

Thanks,

Hardest thing for me has been my job, which requires me to travel 4 days a week, so I eat out a ton. The hard part is breaking down the meals I eat to enter them into the tracker. Some restaurant meals are in there but I have been workin gon choosing better options, grilled chicken, fresh veggies, lunch is horrible and that is where my sodium goes way up when I go to Subway or pack my own sammy. Gotta work on the soidum end.

Brim- not sure what you mean. You should be using your ranges for the challenge...

Thanks so much Whippetluv - that is a great tool. I can't wait to make a big pot of something and really be able to figure out how many calories/fiber/carbs are in it! :-)

I just realized that the nutritional ranges that are on my tracker are not the same as the challenge so I went over on a lot today. Oh well...

GEELAH407,

It's the second tab when you go to SparkRecipes.com (under the Healthy Lifestyle drop down on the main SparkPeople menu). Once you enter all the ingredients and other info, you can save the recipe and decide whether to share it with all or just keep it privately for yourself.

Oye! I sort of blew my ranges in multiple categories today. Ack. It was my first time eating out since I started SparkPeople. I knew it was going to be trouble because it was a group dinner with a bunch of my girlfriends. I had left myself 1000 cals for dinner and yet I was still over a bit. Thankfully, tomorrow is another day!

I think I've answered my own question. I did not realize that there is 590 mg of sodium in 1/4 tsp of salt! So, if you salt your food throughout the day or add salt to a recipe, you will be at the top end of your range and that's not even counting all the sodium already in the food.

I saved my own version of the recipe in the Recipe Calculator and left out the salt and will include that version in my food tracker.

I have a question. I made a recipe called curried chick peas from SparkRecipes. The Nutritional Info for the recipe says it has 1,179 mg of sodium. I did not put in any additional salt (the recipe did call for 1 tsp.) and I've gone through all the ingredients in the recipe and cannot figure out WHERE that much sodium could have come from. The canned tomatoes have about 300 mg per serving. Other than that, there's no significant source. How do we account for incorrect nutritional info pulled over from SparkRecipes?

LOL I hope it all gets fixed.

EXPAT : I know how you feel about thinking about it all the time. If there is one thing i learned from coming and going from SP few times and falling off the wagon is that DON'T OVERTHINK IT... don't set too many high expecations of yourself and intially just watch what you do trying to make healthier decisions. focus on two or 3 things
I look at my cals, water, and exercise more
then i gently try to add fiber

Good luck! and keep tracking, reflecting, and a litttllleee thinking :)

Hey! My sparkpage is broken or something :(. Hopefully the tech team can fix it soon. I've kind of been wondering where all of my supporters have been :) LOL.

Tonight I had to wolf down a celery stalk before bed to make my fiber intake. I blew my sodium intake early on today (still not sure exactly why but I'll investigate) but all of my other scores looked good.

Go Team!

Sorry I haven't been on today. Cyndy: All you need to do is go into my nutrition and you should see a button that says "change nutrition goals" Click that and then click the button that says add another nutrient to track. Then you can add fiber. Hope that helps.

Everyone is doing a great job. I need to get caught up on the tracking!!!

Keep up the good work!

Hi everyone,
I agree with Jnnsalas and rockinitoff. This is kind of hard work and time consuming!!!! This challenge really makes you think about what you are about to put into your mouth. On the other hand, when you eat something you wonder how you are going to explain that to everyone!!!!! Lol! It is true about the detective work. I have been left a couple of evenings with an unexpected snack to eat so that I can get into one of the ranges!!!! Even then I am not actually being that successful!
This is fun, but I am thinking about this all of the time, I am not sure that is a healthy outlook!!!!
Good Luck everyone. Have a good day.

Alot of what I put is an estimate or substituted with the closest thing so I find that throws things off sometimes.

How's everyone doing on the challenge?

I find it's kind of like a puzzle. After my meals at the end of day, I look at my stats and see where I am. Like yesterday I was low on calories, low on carbs, fine on protein, and low on fiber. So I ended up plugging in extra food into the nutrician tracker to see - trial and error style - what was the perfect food to eat to get my points in the right ranges. Yesterday's perfect food was an orange = calories, carbs and fiber. It's like detective work. Kind of fun but I don't think I'd be doing this detailed work if I wasn't in the challenge. Mostly, I just make sure that I'm in the right calorie range and not too far off everywhere else.

Go Team!

I just took a look and it is probably the salsa. While it is better for you than a lot of things, it is high in sodium. At 126 mg per 1tbs that was 1008 mg in sodium for your salsa.

If you click on each item in your tracker it will tell you what the levels are. Hope that helps

JNN-
I had the same trouble today with getting up there...I wasn't feeling well, didn't feel like eating, and was trying to figure out what I have on hand for my evening snack(need to go to the grocery store) that would put me in my calorie range for the day. I found something, but I have NO idea where all my sodium is coming from...ideas?

ETA: I just figured out how to use the Full Report thing on the Nutrition Tracker. So that's where all the sodium is from! I had no idea...

It looks like everyone is off to a great start! Go team!

I recently added sodium and fiber to my tracker and - whoa! - what an eye opener! I went WAY over on both. Didn't think too much fiber was a problem but then I read an article on this site (search for TOO MUCH FIBER) and it explains why too much fiber is not good.

I have to confess that I entered my foods at about 7PM last night and realized I was low on about 600 calories and just about low on everything else (my calorie range is pretty high since I'm starting out heavier than most of you). So I shouted to my husband "How can I get easily get 600 calories in me quickly" and he said "Have some ice cream. Enjoy it". So I did and, yes, it put me in my limits for the day. In the future, I will focus on getting more real food throughout the day. The splurge was nice although it wasn't nearly as satisfying as jumping on that scale and seeing the weight go down, down, down! I'm surprised how the ice cream was good but not "oh my god fabulous" as it usually tastes.

Looks like we are off to a good start!

You can put your recipes in the recipe builder at sparkrecipes.com (under the healthy lifestyle tab)and it will give you calories for them. You are also able to share them with other members there if you want.

I think maybe I wasn't very clear on the cardio thing. You can have 4 rest days in a week and still get the 5 points. Just put REST on your template and I will also keep track of rest days. For those of you that didn't give yourself points, I did give them to you, so count it as a rest day!

admitting to be a techno-geek and detail oriented, I do use a program to create the nutritional data for an entire recipe, then enter the recipe here on my nutrtion information. I've been tracking my nutrients this way for about 15 years now, so I'm used to it, and have several scales in my kitchen to be able to weight each ingredient.

If I eat at a restaurant and don't know the details, I'll try to find something in my database (or others on the web) that seems similar to it, Baked Ziti vs. Lasagna is a good example. They're basically the same ingredients, just assembled differently. So if I eat lasagna at a restaurant, I'll mark it in my nutrition as the ziti I already have stats for.

Continuing my self-admitted geeki-ness, I have nutritional info for variations on the same dish. So if I find one that I don't have, I kind of "taste test" it to see which one it tasted most like. And in the worst case, I use the least healthy item for the tracker. Better safe than sorry by overstating the amounts of calories, fat, etc... that I ate.

Does it work? For me it does - as the past year's weight lost attests.

25 points out of 60 :-( But I knew I wasn't watching everything. Hopefully the rest of the week will be better. One thing I've been struggling with: How are you guys tracking your homemade foods? For example, I made roasted tomato soup, but I just marked down whatever spark people has for tomato soup (which I think was a big part of why my sodium count was so skewed!). But for the zucchini bread that I made I couldn't find anything comparable so I went through each ingredient and looked up cal/fat/sat fat/sodium and did WAY more math that my head can take... What is everyone else doing, are you going through each homemade dish and working out the details to track it? Or are you just picking something close?

Deli/processed meats of any kind, but particularly ham (and turkey), tend to be loaded with sodium. For that matter, any convenience foods (i.e. canned, processed, frozen, etc...) generally are higher in sodium. Home cooking definitely helps control that. Look for low-sodium alternatives when shopping for these things.

Not that I always practice what I preach :-) I tend towards convenience most of the time (but love to cook when time permits). Thankfully, my weight loss has also rid me of high blood pressure, and the extra sodium that I take in doesn't seem to have any negative impact on me ...

... except that I'm going to be really hard-pressed to get my 5 points for staying in the recommended sodium range :-)

Ok.... So where is all the sodium coming from. I am about 300 or 400 over. I don't salt into anything. How do I get that number lower? I must be eating something I didn't know was so salty. Oh maybe it was the ham sandwich meat. Any suggestions?

EXPAT1- I sent you an email on how to check the sodium and fiber, but it may be helpful to others as well. If you go into my nutrition then hit the change nutrition goals button you will see a button called add a nutrient to tracking. Push that and then find fiber and sodium. click on them and they will be added to the bottom of your nutrient page.

Alan- These are just team points. You will report them on the daily results post and I will double check. If you haven't seen the template check it out in the daily reporting thread. You will fill this out each day. (Link at the bottom of this post)

It is not all or nothing. You get 5 points per goal.

Hope that helps

So a quick question, because I'm ever-so-slightly confused:

1- Are these points that we are reporting (and Jenn is checking) Sparkpoints for us? Or just a team set of points?

2- If they are for us, as well as the team, I assume that you give them to us, Jenn?

3- I hope it's not an all-or-nothing deal. I generally meet all the goals, except sodium - which I've discussed with my doctor. He's okay with the sodium excess.

(Okay, make that a few questions :-)

Good luck everyone!!

Well, oops, for some reason I thought today was Sunday WOAH!

Anyways, I'm going to be away starting tomorrow until Thursday. There are no guarantees that I'll be able to get an internet connection where I'm going. Is it possible for me to just post all my results this week when I get back?

The following people need to make their food/exercise trackers public. You may have one or the other public, but I need both. Also, some of you may have your pages set to private, or may not have a page. I need to be able to see your logs for your points to count for the challenge. Please go into your sparkpage, edit, and then click share my food tracker and share my fitness tracker before tomorrow. I would hate for your points not to count just because I can't see your trackers!

Yep, challenge starts tommorrow. :) If you live some where that today is tomorrow (haha) you can either start today or start tomorrow, depending on how you want to work it. It is up to you :)

I think the challenge starts tomorrow (Sunday Sep 7th). I'm going grocery shopping tonight so that I have everything I need! Go team!

Gearing up for the challange. I did not realize how much sodium is in everything I eat. This is just what I need to get me motivated more.

Please use this thread to root for each other and for questions or just daily chit chat about the challenge. Do not post your results here. Post results using the template on the daily posting thread. You can let everyone know how you are doing here, but I won't count the points from this thread.

Good luck to everyone and remember this is to help you get into good habits.
