Even though my scale number went back up this past weekend (on the way down again now) I am optimistic that my up and down days are slowing.

And wow -- what an overall team effort this challenge has been! I know some of us are less than happy with what we've done, but some of us have been so successful that it truly gives me hope. Della, I'm looking at you!!

Regardless of whether we lost or gained, we're all still coming here for encouragement and understanding. What better definition of a team is there?

Thanks to Noreen for continuing this challenge, and thanks to each of you who have stopped by this thread and kept in touch. Whether it was posting or reading, sending a Spark Goodie or adding a comment, being part of this group has continued to be a bright spot in my day and I really feel part of something bigger and better than myself when I'm here.

Good luck to all with continuing journeys!

Sherry

Mary, for me the only way to stop craving sweets and junk is to stop eating them... I don't do "moderate" well. I once heard or read that "you crave what you eat" and that really seems to be true for me. When I start to incorporate sweets or "snack foods", then I start craving them more. When I'm eating veggies regularly, I find that I crave them when I leave them out!

Anyway, welcome to the group! Although you did get here just as we're winding up this challenge - we'll be moving to the "Don't fall behind..." challenge tomorrow - see you there!

- Nancy -

I am/can do better than this!

Hi I'm Mary...I lost 50 lbs and put 9lbs back on. I was so disappointed that I pretty much gave up. I realize that it would be worse to give up then it is to gain 9lbs. So here I am starting a new day.
If anyone can tell me how to break the craving for sweets and junk PLEASE tell me, help me. I don't want to go back up.I don't want any special pills or supliments I just want to see my hard work paying off. :-(

Happy Monday everyone! The weekend of course flew by again! I did get out for a 4 mile run on Saturday in our cooler temps. Our daughter came over with her puppy Sully and we walked into town for dinner. Yesterday I did a lot of yard work and did get on the elliptical. That half marathon in October is looming!

LindaLou - down a little - those ounces add up!

Sherry - glad you are seeing a downturn on the scale! Well done!

Sue - how exciting to get to the Grey Cup game! Hope your team makes it with you! Best of luck getting to your goal in the next 5% challenge.

Marilyn - well done! You have gone great and way to go making it into the new category!

Chris - sounds like an NSV.

I am posting the new challenge today for anyone joining the next round!

Marilyn emoticon on moving out of the obese category!! That is always a good day! emoticon Whether or not you want to think about doing a mini maintenance might depend on how close you are to your goal. Good luck, whatever you decide. Personally I'm so close tht I'm just going to keep pressing on and hope to hit my goal weight during the summer challenge - THEN I'll maintain a bit before deciding if I need to get down a bit more. I think I'd like to hit about pounds before the goal that I set as a final goal but it will depend on if my body agrees! Been there - done that - trying to get to a number that my body just didn't agree with - even if it was only 5 pounds different.

Chris - I remembered when I was holding the back of my thigh one day doing my post workout stretching a while back and realized that I was feeling just muscle! It was a great feeling!

Should post my template - but I haven't gotten to updating it yet - watching too much football! I know that I'm up a bit - I think- from my last result. I seem to be bouncing around in a 1-2 pound range and when I get to the lower end I never seem to stay there long! emoticon I'll just have to emoticon

Went up a bit again. I have, however, noticed less water gain, less wiggly fat areas and more muscle. I know muscle weighs more then fat so will keep working on that and get toned a bit and maybe I'll start seeing the weight go down also.

Down 1 more pound. Checked BMI and finally left obese category and moved down to overweight. Continuing with Callanetics muscle toning exercises and seeing some improvement after about 3 weeks. Thanks to all for the encouraging words which really help keep me focused and moving! Getting ready to start a new 5% Challenge July 1. I'm thinking about slowing down the weight loss to give my body a chance to adjust and if I do this I may be more of a 1-2% or maintainer during the challenge. But it is a little scary thinking of doing this as it could be a way for me to get off track again (as has happened to me in the past). Going to start reading more information on the Maintaining Weight team and see what others have been doing. Best wishes to all for a happy summer!

Noreen - Yes our CFL season runs from now (kickoff is tonight) until the Grey Cup game at the end of November being held this year in our nation's capital of Ottawa -partly because it's Canada's 150th birthday this year (July 1st). Guess who's going to be at that Grey Cup game?? Yup my DH and I will attend our first ever GC this year! Just hoping my team makes it there too! They could do it if they can avoid the many injuries to their top players that have plagued them the past couple of seasons. Anyway I'm a happy camper today! emoticon emoticon

Scales were down a bit yesterday and the day before - new low - but we had lunch out yesterday (didn't need supper) and I indulged in sweet potato fries - a rarity for me when eating out. They came with salt on them - something I would never add and would have asked for them not to add had I known. I've joined the At Goal and Maintaining and Transition to Maintenance team since I'm close to getting to my initial goal. I'm hoping to get to goal weight during the summer 5% challenge (or this one!) - just 7-8 pounds to go.

emoticon everyone! emoticon

Another very slight, but real, downturn on the scale. I am excited about that and hope I can do what it takes to continue that. Lots of catching up and updating to do -- here and at work, so can't spend too much time doing any one thing.

Our building at work still has a non-functioning air handling system, so the best we can do during hot and humid days like today is keep our windows shut, run fans when necessary and try to think about how nice it will be whenever it gets fixed. It's not so much the higher temperatures indoors, it's more the stillness of no air movement and the knowledge that all we can do is ignore the humidity when it gets too high or get up/out and walk around. We'll get through it :)

Lindalou, I've never tried Weight Watchers, but the cost factor is one thing I really didn't like. Probably because I knew if I didn't "do" the plan right, I'd have wasted my money. And I always have something that would be a better decision to purchase than a service or the opportunity to go to a meeting.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Somehow other people's lack of planning gets in my way. I was planning on getting out this morning. But John was running late for work, so I had to drop his car off at the dealer for some service. Still trying to fit a run into my schedule.

Sherry - John has been working with Google Docs too, and they seem a little frustrating, not as simple as Word and Excel - good luck! Glad you are getting out between the downpours. Yes, we have been pretty proactive as homeowners, but the girls are new to it - and you have no control over the people above you. Luckily our other daughter is on the top floor. Also dealing with water at our in-laws. You know how it is - today we are in the middle - taking care of kids and parents.

Lin - the good news is that you are still here! I've been struggling too. We will get a handle on this and we'll show up at the next challenge!

Have a great day everyone!

We had a brief (maybe two) downpours yesterday, and a short span of hail. Then the sun was back out and a fairly pleasant rest of the day. Not bad for a first day back at work, but still didn't let me accomplish a great deal. Today is better, but two errands to do before meeting my parents mid-afternoon. Worst part of my morning? Looking for answers on a Google docs question. The best part? I found the answer, after having maybe two dozen browser windows open to search and try many options. Whew.

My next challenge is to find out how to use one very simple formula in a form (Google Doc). We want to eliminate people doing simple math wrong. They will enter a number, which we want multiplied by a specified dollar amount, that will then show a total. If anyone has an easy answer or where I can find that, please share.

Otherwise, I plan on a short walk to and from the library to return and perhaps check out another book, and a brief stroll next door to deliver a certificate to a colleague who wasn't able to attend our conference last week. Temps may reach 90, but the breeze definitely should help lower humidity.

And the weight is now going back down. Darn those conference meals anyway!

Noreen, we've had enough water issues and damage over the years that I'm strongly proactive about making sure anything I can do is up to date and working. However, when it's someone else's fault, there's not much to do except clean it up and hope for good insurance coverage on their part :)

Good for you Sue, Della and Marilyn! Keeping you in my sights is a good thing.

Chris -- we will get there, too!

Yesterday evening we got a call from our oldest daughter, water was pouring into the fan in her master bath at her townhouse from the unit above. Apparently the hot water heater emptied itself. We brought over a bunch of towels and John wanted to bring over fans, but I felt that she really need the high powered fans of a disaster recovery place. So we contacted the insurance company to set that up. Hopefully the woman's insurance company handles it, of course her son is saying that was not the issue. Hillary was smart and took video of it happening and John took pictures of the woman's hot water heater with water on the floor.

Marilyn - you have not only lost weight, you have gained in flexibility too! Good for you! Great job on adding the toning class.

Chris - the wedding in July and fitting into the jeans for the wedding sounds like a great goal! Sounds like a fun wedding theme.

Sue - you are an inspiration and encouragement to others on this challenge! Football season starting already?

Nancy - yes, technically a loss, so take it! Safe travels!

I had plans to get out for a run last night, but the thunderstorms had other ideas. So I went to the track at the gym. I am one week behind on half marathon training, so I need to catch up. I am out of shape on running, but I'll get there, hopefully!

Have a great day everyone!

Marilyn - emoticon emoticon on losing 60 pounds! I got there not long ago myself and I'm still hovering just on the edge but I am less than 8 pounds from my goal so losses are pretty slow these days. I'll get there eventually. I've come too far to "give up the ship" now!

Della - You've been making steady progress. I'm sure you can knock off the last couple of pounds (and a bit)! Good luck!

emoticon to others who've seen some loss over the past week or so (I'm slow posting here). To those who aren't seeing the progress you'd like, emoticon . It's a long journey but you'll eventually get to your destination if you keep working at it!

My schedule is pretty much wide open these days with only my weekly knitting group going on. No excuse for not getting in those daily workouts! Our football season (CFL) is about to start though so I'll be spending lots of time checking out my team and watching all the games - not an active past time!

Have a good week everyone!

At least it wasn't a big gain this time around. I've been drinking lots of water, My water cup is 12 oz and I drink anywhere from 4 to 6 per day. Went to a funeral for a dear lady today. They had lots of food and I managed to stay mostly with the fruits and veggies, no dips. Also drank water rather than the other types of drinks that were there. I think I just need to move more and walk farther. Need to get down to a size I can wear my jeans before my sons wedding in July. It's a blue jeans and t-shirt theme.

Saturday weigh-in and down 1 more pound. Since October 2016 I've lost 60 pounds and 24.75 inches. Clothes are definitely getting baggier on me. I'm feeling much healthier and have more energy. Since I've started muscle toning exercises and some of them are on the floor, it's much easier for me to get back up to a standing position from the floor. My skin is beginning to tighten in places and my flexibility has also increased. I can now bend over from the waist and touch my palms flat on the floor. When I first started I could only bend over from the waist and my finger tips were at least 12 inches or more from touching the floor. The Callanetics exercises are really working for me. Overall, this is the best I've felt in a very long time. My biggest changes I made in my daily routine included eating less and exercising more and logging nutrition and exercise on Spark and getting motivation from all the success stories from other Sparkers. Thanks to all for the encouragement and inspiration. Best wishes to all!

The week is flying by! More thunderstorms yesterday! Looks like more rain on Friday and Saturday too - saves us having to water the lawn and plants.

Nancy - the trip sounds like fun! I'm sure it will be a different experience not staying in the youth hostels! We were in Rome, Venice, Florence (for a day trip) - we were staying in the Tuscany region in San Gimigano and did a few day trips from there.

LindaLou - WW can get pricey. Hopefully you can take what you learned from there and from SP can keep going!

Have a great day everyone!

I forgot to report on my previous decision to try to get to bed by 12:00 AM more consistently. The first 3 nights, I was in bed between 12:15 and 12:30 which I felt pretty good about. After that it fell apart with everything from 12:30 (rare) to 2:30 - with most nights later than 1:00. Clearly I have work to do!

Noreen, our itinerary for Italy is: Venice, Varenna (Lake Como), Cinque Terre, Florence, Assisi, and Rome. I've been to Venice and Florence before, but it was 45 years ago so I don't remember a whole lot. Also, then we were staying in youth hostels for the most part - this trip will be different!

Happy Wednesday everyone! We had a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, but then I dragged John out for a walk. We have a session with our trainer Friday evening. I think we'll walk into town tonight.

TTenacity - still making great progress! Good for you!

Nancy - how fun Italy in October! Where in Italy are you going? We were there in the Summer of 2010 and loved it. I think that is an attainable goal and you have a great reason to get there!

Della - this has been a great challenge for you and you have worked hard! I think that 2 more is attainable! Good for you!

We have a couple of more weeks in this challenge and I'll get another one set up for anyone who wants to keep going!

Once again, it's been a couple of weeks since I've checked in here... Good to see so many doing so well! It's also good to see those (like me) not doing quite so well but hanging in there, trying to find the right combination of behaviors/motivators/foods that will help get us going again.

This morning, I dug out a lightweight raincoat I haven't worn in awhile because this morning there was a light rain out. It doesn't fit well, never has - it doesn't reach around my hips so I can't use the zipper, but can close it with the velcro tabs in the middle. Got to thinking that I'd like to take that jacket with me on a trip to Italy in October, but it would be really nice if it fits better! I'm hoping that will provide some added motivation to do better.

If I can really get on track with 1# a week, that's 16# in 16 weeks! Maybe that'll be a new mantra for me: 16 pounds in 16 weeks! My biggest problem once again is the runaway evening snacking.

Happy Tuesday everyone! It has been a while since I checked in. I was at a conference last week in Austin. Busy attending sessions, working on a proposal and catching up with some contacts of mine. I also stayed the weekend to visit an old friend that I have not seen in several years and it was nice to catch up.

Sherry - you are right, it is great to be here! Nice to cheer each other on. Support each other when we aren't doing so well. It is a great community!

TTenacity - glad you lost that water weight! Salt is such a culprit!

LindaLou - great job sticking with WW!

Della - good for you for joining the 5% challenge! You've been doing a great job this challenge and great job with the workouts. I'm sure you are ready for a break from school!

Marilyn - fantastic job on the weight loss and the inches lost! You are making fantastic progress!

Chris - hope you figure out what's causing the weight gain. Make sure you are drinking enough water.

Snowienh1 - welcome to the challenge! You caught us near the end, but another one will be starting if you care to stay with us.

Sue - enjoy your quieter week! Happy to share the challenge. I simply used Marilyn's link that did work and then copied the link and used the "add a link" button. It is the way to turn it into a hyperlink for anyone reading. Great job this challenge! It gets harder to lose as you get closer to goal.

Joann - great job on the quilts! You and me both need to work harder. I have a plan to turn things around, I set a date to get started.

Lin - great job! Sounds like you are feeling better!

Have a great day everyone!

Not much to say. Still not going the direction I would like it to. Too much stress this weekend but most of that should be over now. Bought a new (to me, it's used) van on Saturday and got two customer quilts done this weekend. A third one is on the long arm now. Hopefully I can get that one done Monday evening and load the next one up on the frame on Tuesday night.

Congrats to all who lost! I need to work harder on what I'm doing.

Have a great week!

Noreen - Thanks for getting that link up for the 5% challenge as I never did get back to fix mine. I see I left out a "slash" mark. emoticon It's great when you can find reliable kids to help out with jobs.

Della - It's often easy to spot - or feel - the water weight isn't it? I haven't noticed swollen feet in some time although with the summer here that might happen occasionally. It's great that you have some new options for getting in some exercise - and you'll soon have lots of time to use them and do your scrapbooking. emoticon

Marilyn - Great progress there!

Ttenacity - Back on track for you too!

Chris - That sodium gets you every time. I really try to check labels especially of any canned food, There seems to be so much sodium hiding in almost everything!

Busy week starting with being at my mom's last weekend and arriving home Monday morning in time to head out for book club Monday afternoon. Knitting group, lunch with a friend before taking her to pick up her new vehicle then going on a trail walk, and a final Drifter's practice rounded out the week. Yesterday I was too tired to even exercise although I'd worked out a bit less during the week but I had a headache and was stuffed up and low on energy. Today the Drifters sang at a small church where we sometimes practice so we are truly finished for the season. It's nice to have the break but I miss it a bit too. DH and I spent time at a boat show at the waterfront park this afternoon even though we've never been boaters. It really was a warm summer day - perfect for the show. Had an early dinner downtown before coming home again to watch preseason football (CFL). I'm looking forward to a quieter week coming up.

Weight down a bit yesterday but back up again today! emoticon

My daughter bought me a mini stair stepper and a body cycle! Very excited about doing something new. I did the cycle for 3 min and the stepper 15 steps. Will try to add more time and more steps each week. I am sure they will help me firm up my legs.
9 days of school left but, who's counting ME!!!! lol I want to have time to once again scrapbook and make cards. I have been on pinterest pinning new ideas and I want to try them all out.lol
Have a good evening everyone.

Starting weight 217

June 11 216

Just starting. I believe I may have IBS and I am finally going to do something about it.
I also have Hashimotos and have been steadily gaining a couple of pounds every 6 months.
Tired of feeling miserable and sick, doing something about it.

Weight went back up this week. I'm hoping because of the speed walking with my grandson and gaining muscles rather then other reasons. I'm sure part is water gain because of to much salt. I've been trying to watch that, but there are things that have more sodium then one thinks is there. Most of my foods are home cooked, rarely go out to eat. I don't add salt but I know some foods have hidden salt.

Saturday weigh-in and lost 2 pounds this week and 2 inches this last month. Continued 30+ minutes daily walk on treadmill and have added 30-45 minutes of muscle toning exercises daily. Starting to feel and see bones in my body that have been hidden for many years. This past week had a busy schedule with 2 visiting grandchildren, 4 and 12 years old. But, managed to keep to my healthy foods and exercise schedule. Getting closer to leaving the BMI obese category and being in the overweight category after I lose 2 more pounds. Wishing everyone a healthy summer week and heard we are having temps next week in the 90's here in Virginia.

Noreen--thanks for the information about the 5% challenge. I went to the sight and joined the next challenge. With the challenge here and the 5% challenge I am looking forward to watching the pounds fade away this summer. I want to buy smaller clothes by Sept!
I went to my hydro fit and shallow water exercise last night and boy did they work us!! I am feeling it today but it is a good feeling. When I feel sore muscles I know I am doing my best.
Only 9 days of school left! Next week we will be testing and then the last four days we will be filled with supervising and helping the teachers where needed. I am so looking forward to break and to do some scrapbooking and card making and loosing more weight!!
I hope you all have a great weekend.

5% Challenge

Happy Tuesday, getting a couple of hours of work in before I head to the airport. We hired a young boy in the neighborhood to help clear out part of the yard that is overgrown and we have 6 more yards of mulch coming on Wednesday. He is doing a great job, hard worker and very respectful. His parents have raised a great kid with a strong work ethic. Nice to see. Staying the weekend in Austin to visit an old friend too!

Lin - I know you can turn this around!

Kathleen L - great job on the 5% challenge!

Sherry - glad you are getting a break from the humidity. We have slightly cooler weather too and less humid. Great job on seeing the scale drop down!

Marilyn - your link works - thanks for sharing!

Have a great day everyone!

Kathleen - I just checked my link and it doesn't work so I'll probably try to post it again. Yours isn't coming up as a link (it should be in blue print) but at least people can see what the site is!

And the word for today is "slowly." As in, I slowly realize that I can do what I need to, and I slowly start doing those things :)

Still warm today, but less humid thank goodness. Scale is on the way down now and I hope to keep it that way.

I've been part of several teams on SP, but these past few months here have been really something -- so many of us are doing well and the weight is going down. I am happy to be here, and appreciate people staying in touch. It's really great to read about success, and the occasional setback, because each of us is rooting for everyone else.

I've been away for a few days at mom's and just got home this morning. Then I had to go out this afternoon so I'm just catching up and just checked my sparkmail. For those who are interested, here is the link to join the summer 5% challenge. I believe that the challenge begins in about three weeks ( or maybe a bit less now!)

Thanks for the congrats Della. It's been a long road and of course it isn't finished but it's wonderful in when the light at the end of the tunnel is getting very bright! emoticon - you'll get there too!

I did take a quick peek at comments but don't have time to comment on everything at the moment. Let me just say emoticon to those who've seen progress in the past week.

Happy Monday everyone! The rain held off over the weekend. We had a great time at my niece's graduation party and went to a wine walk in town yesterday. Fit in a little yard work yesterday evening and ended the day with over 15,000 steps. Heading to Austin, TX for a conference this week and spending the weekend with a friend.

Marilyn - great job meeting the 5% challenge and you have made such great progress since October! Well done!

Teester2 - fantastic job on exceeding the 5% challenge!

Joann - I hear you. I've been doing a lot of yard work too, but it's not the same as getting some great cardio in. We can do this!

Chris - good for you!

Have a great day everyone! My time on this week may be limited due to conference activities, but I'll check in when I can!

Not much of a loss but at least it's a loss. I'm feeling my tummy muscles starting to tighten up a bit. Hoping that it will also get smaller in size.

Apparently there was too much celebrating last weekend and all through the week! I need to get back on track!!! I've been saying that a lot lately. Now I need to just do it! I've been getting some yard work in but it's not necessarily "good" exercise. It takes me about 3 hours or so to mow the entire lawn and that's with a 42" zero-turn lawn mower. A lot of sitting! At least the trimming lets me walk around a bit.

Congratulations to all who have lost weight this week!

Joann
