I’m trying to get back into my yoga practice daily. I used to be in better shape a couple years ago but I’ve gained back lot of weight but I’ve been trying to use my Fitbit and walk and do yoga. My poses are not what they used to be, but I’m trying. I also have stiff hamstrings and hips, so I’ve been doing hip openers and today I did more of a comfort yoga with blanket and pillow. I did some yoga for my stress and back yesterday. I think if I just keep at it, little by little I’ll get back to the way I was and the weight will come off the more active I become. I do like to use the yoga strap and blocks. And if I can’t make it far in the pose, I just back off and let gravity do it’s thing. emoticon

You could be in child's pose, with consistent and mindful breathing and a focused gaze, and have a strong and satisfying practice that day.

What a wonderful insight, thanks PETALIA for sharing! emoticon emoticon

JAIMESUN: Try sitting on a block when you attempt to sit crossed legged. Having one's hips higher than one's knees is super helpful. It might allow you to do it and have a straight spine and not have pain. Hope so.

There are modifications for every pose. When I've practiced when injured, I modify. When I practice when exhausted, I modify. It's been a major challenge for me to listen to my body, to be aware of how it is right now, not yesterday, and respond accordingly. Ask your teacher to help you learn modifications for where you're at. No need ever to be watching from the sidelines! If your current teacher can't help you with this, find one who can. Good luck and have fun!

JAIMESUN good strategy, focus in what you can do now, at this moment, with practice you'll accomplish much more. I'm 68, I'm practicing Yoga so I can reach many more years flexible and full of energy. The positive attitude helps. Namaste! Join the monthly challenge, Inspire and Be Inspired!

I read this topic cause my body has tightened up dramatically over the last 10 yrs. I am going to check out the links too. I think I need to accept my limitations at 64 though cause I have been doing yoga and classes for 8wks and I still can't sit cross legged. It used to be so easy! I'm going to try to focus on the beauty of the practice instead of what I can't do.

If your hips are tight, sit on a block when you sit crossed legged. It helps a lot to have your hips higher than your knees. Use props liberally! The most important things are breath and a focused gaze. Modify as needed. When modifying, having a straight spine is important. Touching your toes or having straight legs with no bend at the knees isn't. For example, when doing rag-doll, bend over, feet at least hip width apart, bend your knees A LOT and clasp opposite elbows. If that is too much, rest your hands on blocks in front of you. Stay in the pose for a good long time. When in flat back pose during a sun salutation, bend your knees loads and attempt to have a straight spine. To get the rounding out of your spine, bend your knees even more, press your collar bone to the front of the room whilst pressing your tail bone to the back of the room - like traction. Don't worry how your poses look rather be concerned with how they feel on the inside. Breathe deeply throughout. With breathe, and with some time in a pose, you'll be able to deepen the stretch. But be careful! Also good for hip opening is seated half pigeon. The muscles you want to reach take time to react, they are so deep. So stay in it for a couple of minutes. And breathe! Always breathe!

I think you just have to keep doing it, don't stretch to the point of pain, just a mild feeling of stretch. And keep breathing. that really helps to build flexibility is to breath into the feeling of tightness and then try to relax on the out-breath.

Have you "googled" for yoga routines for increasing flexibitily? YouTube is a wonderful resource for yoga videos.

Hi,
I would like to start doing yoga regularly. I am extremely inflexible. Can't even sit "indian" style or cross legged. My hips are extremely tight. Could I get some recommendations to help this? Do you think If I just did a few poses and holding them for several seconds, to even a minute or so, every day, would that make me more flexible? I was thinking maybe something like thread the needle, holding that pose on each side for a minute, then maybe trying to do pigeon (as far as I can go) and holding for a minute, then moving on to a couple other poses and doing these each day, I'm wondering if you think I would notice a big difference, say maybe after a couple weeks to a month. I'm open to any other suggestions, or maybe there's a website to read up on increasing flexibility. Thanks for any information.
