I remember seeing a friend of mind doing a chest shimmy going, "There is no way I'd ever be able to do that." Now if I'm listening to a catchy song on the radio, I'll sometimes do a little shimmy as I'm singing along.

Don't worry, I'm at a stoplight. emoticon

I used to tell myself that once I could layer a shimmy on a maya, I'd have everything I wanted, dance-wise. Now I can do that (it was very hard for me to make the maya smooth and sexy still, and the shimmy quick and awesome) but I'm not satisfied. :p

I want to get better at sword, and zills too. (I'm decent with both but not amazing.)

I too am having a problem with the M and M from Shimmy, I can do my right no problem, but not my left.

I am also having problems with any moves that have two things going on, be it layers ( hip cirlces with shimmy) or just having to move my arms and legs at the same time!

I can imagine that some of the shimmies would be hard if you have knee problems. Have you tried the Suhaila type with glute squeeze only? They may be better for you physically.

I'm getting better at shimmies but I still have a hard time because I have a bad knee. Ethnic shimmies are easier for me because there is more hip involved but my right knee always wants to lock up. I can hold a shimmy for about 30 seconds now when my knee gets warmed up. I used to not be able to do it at all.

I remember when I could not do shimmy's and undulations. I also remember when I could do a 3/4 shimmy when I walked in a straight line but not when I moved in circle.

I hope to have a "remember when" moment soon for layering feet, hips, undulations and finger cymbals together.... emoticon

My biggest "couldn't" used to be doing a Maya while keeping my heels on the floor. Now, I've finally worked through that and can do it (most of the time) when I'm in class. I've noticed, however, that I still lift them occasionally when I perform. Working on it though. I still have problems with the flutters and belly rolls. Too much belly fat to see if anything is moving there or not. LOL!!

Not dance related, but I can run again. I was always the person that hated running with a passion. It always hurt my legs and knees and I could never get my breathing under control to keep going for long distances. However I did it today. (If anyone is interested, I posted "the story" in my blog.)

Life is a journey, not a destination!

Let's keep this thread going.

For those of you who have just started dancing, and are having trouble with a movement or a concept, please post it here. Then later, you can go back and read through the posts to see how much you've accomplished!

If you've been dancing a while, let us know what was SO HARD for you when you first started. It helps to know that other people struggle with the same things!

Let's go!

I remember when I couldn't...

1. Do a maya properly. Now it is probably my favourite move.
2. Exercise to the Rania Bellydance for weight loss dvd - I was doing it today and I didn't really find it very challenging to follow. (Still working on Suhaila mind you).
3. Shimmy and travel, but now I am beginning to get the hang of it!
4. Dance at all! I used to try to dance at home and would quit very quickly because I didn't know how to move my body.
5. When I wasn't brave enough to attend dance class because of my weight. Now I simply do not view it as a problem.
6. When I was 11 and in acting classes at the end of term I had to perform a commercial and I froze because I was terrified. Now I can get out there and bellydance in front of an audience.
7. When I thought that I would never be brave enough to bare my belly to an audience. I have done it now, and there is no going back.

Good thread!

Ashley.

Hi - I am new to belly dancing and it is a wonderful exercise and a very sensual dance. I read in one of your notes that you lost 5 inches in your waist. What do you attribute to losing the inches in your waist? Thank you. Elaine

Wow... remembering when I didn't ever imagine that I could run my own business and work from home-
!
Didn't imagine finding a Belly dance class with child care at the rec center!

Didn't know I could NOT feel embarrassed, self conscious about dancing ...
oh man, the first class was a huge revelation.. as I was heartbroken and grieving over my husband 's leaving us for good(almost 4 yrs ago)... and realizing that I actually didn't think about him/it for an entire hour!!
I could laugh and feel beautiful again!!-- all making me a better mother/person in many ways! emoticon

My best is yet to come.

I tell my students to keep a journal or a blog of their bellydance experience, and to use it as a motivating tool when they are struggling. I believe nothing is quite as motivating as gaining mastery over something that once troubled us. It seems to work with my lovely swans, so I thought I'd introduce the idea here. If you're a newbie to bellydance, be sure to start your journal today!

1. I remember watching Suhaila's Beginning Choreography video and thinking, "This is SO HARD!"

(Today I'm looking for new ways to spice up and complicate this choreography because it's just too easy.)

2. I remember watching her Advanced Drum Solo Choreography and thinking, "Oh there is just NO way -- not even if I'd started this DECADES ago!"

(Today I know it just takes practice to get that complicated layering, and frankly I've done harder stuff in her workshops.)

3. I remeber watching Delilah flip coins on her belly and thinking, "I wish I could do that."

(Today I can DO THAT! Not quite as good as D, but I can move em!)

4. I remember thinking I would never get the belly roll.

(Today I'm still thinking it will never look good, but it's there, nonetheless.)

5. I remember when I couldn't do a 3/4 shimmy any faster than death-row speed.

(Today it's one of my favorite moves, along with the super-sonic "single-single-three-quarter" shimmy.)

6. I remember when wearing finger cymbals meant I immediately forgot everything about how to dance.

(Today it's a rare day that I'm NOT wearing and dancing with them.)

7. I remember when I couldn't even FIND my glutes, let alone contract them as fast as Suhaila.

(Last night I did the Buns video again and thought, Did somebody slow this down? I could have sworn she did these faster.)

Remember:

PRESS ON! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsucessful people with talent. Genuis will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination ALONE are omnipotent!!
