I'm sorry that you're feeling so down lately. You made it quite a few days before you started smoking again so I know that you can quit when you're ready. In the meantime if you're going to smoke, try not to smoke like a chimney. And when you're ready to give it a try again, give it your all. This may not be the right time for you, but I KNOW that you can quit when you get to the right time and have dealt with the emotional issues that are dragging you down at the moment. emoticon emoticon

There was much rejoicing!

The one year will come, I promise. Funny thing is that for me getting to the one year mark was reeeeally hard, but then reaching two years was such a non-event that I forgot to email my old boss about it. (She had been my main face to face cheerleader.) She came to our Christmas potluck a few days before my 3 year mark and asked me how I was doing with it, so I didn't forget to tell her that I made it to three years.

So anyway, if you stay motivated you will definitely make it to one year emoticon

I think that I have dreamed about smoking since I quit, but I'm not really sure because I've hardly ever remembered my dreams since my first husband's death.

I quit once for about a year but I started up again because at that time I was still going out drinking with friends and I've always smoked when I'm drinking. (I quit drinking in my late 20s so I haven't had that excuse for a while.)

I contemplated sending you a private email and taking this discussion off the message board since it seems to be just you and me now, but I decided not to because I'm hoping that maybe someone else who's trying to quit will get some motivation from our conversation. I want to remind you that you're doing really great. emoticon emoticon

Well whatever it was that did it, I say hooray for you! Quitting is not easy. I know because I tried it half a hundred times before I finally managed it. I'm glad that it didn't take a health scare for you the way it did for me. Just stay stubborn and you'll be just fine. emoticon

Oh, I don't want you to think that I was trying to tell you to quit drinking coffee, too. As you say, one thing at a time. (If I'd tried to start drinking decaf at the same time that I was quitting smoking, someone would have had to peel me down off of the ceiling every morning emoticon )

I want you to know that I'm really proud of you. Quitting smoking isn't an easy thing, no matter how you do it. But I know that you CAN do it if it's really something that you want and are committed to. Give it a month and you'll be amazed at how great it feels to be able to breathe again, and that will help you to want to keep at it. You can do this. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hooray for you! It's not easy to quit doing anything that you're accustomed to. I quit smoking cold turkey (because none of the other ways every worked for me....) and I know that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to....and yet I'm finding cutting caffeinated coffee out of my life to be really hard for me right now.
emoticon

If I could quit smoking, switching to decaf coffee should be a piece of cake....except that it's not. But I'm convinced that both of these addictions were/are at least half psychological in nature, and I'm doggone well going to quit drinking caffeinated coffee in the morning....even if it kills me. (Which is what it feels like it's going to do right now....)

Magdalini. I am living proof that you can quit smoking. I gave up cigarettes for Lent on 2/9/05 and I haven't picked one up since, I quit cold turkey and used some of the methods that they use in AA (after all we are addicts. Our addiction just isn't alcohol). I took it one day at a time and for every day that I got through, I gave myself a little reward, like a bath with rose petals floating in it. I also joined the MSN group freedom from tobacco. It was a great support mechanism for me and there are a lot of educational materials on the site as well. Check it out and see if it might work for you. I smoked for over 25 years and had two unsuccessful quits before I finally hit bottom. You can do this. Stay strong. What you get at the end is definitely worth the struggle.

I slipped a whole bunch of times before I finally quit for good 3 years ago. Try not to slip anymore, but always get back up and try again if/when you do. Keep at it because I KNOW that you can quit forever when you are finally ready to do it. emoticon

When you take hubby on vacation just make sure that he knows where the money for the vacation came from....and that there are a LOT of things that the two of you could do if he were to quit smoking and save all of that money, too. I'm certainly not trying to encourage you to be one of those obnoxious preachy people I promised myself that I would not become when I quit smoking. But encouraging your hubby to quit without being obnoxious is definitely a good thing. emoticon emoticon

Hooray for you!! On the 21st of the month I'll have gone 3 years without a cigarette. Who'd have guessed that would ever happen? You'll be amazed by the improvements you'll see in your overall health as time goes on without you smoking anymore. And that saving money thing is pretty great, too.

For my part, I'm now saving $250 a month that I used to shell out for the copay I had for the shots I use to treat my MS. Something called the Chronic Disease Fund has been paying that copay since November, so I'll finally be able to start fattening up my emergency fund account. (Guess I should have been putting what I'm no longer spending on smokes into that pot all along, but sometimes I'm just kinda stupid....)

Anyway, this was really supposed to be about you, wastn't it? You're doing great, so keep it up and join me in the haven't-smoked-for-more-than-a-year club next year. I know that you can do it, and also that you're going to really feel great once you've gone a little while without a cigarette. emoticon

There was much rejoicing!

Good for you. Taking care of yourself is important!

I friend of mine - who also belly dances - was told by her husband that since they needed to cut down expenses, she should give up here belly dancing lessons. Her reply, "Not unless and until you quit your smoking!"

My hubby and I don't even drink wine or beer anymore AND we have YET to go to a restaurant. We are also saving for a trip

i am thinking what i can do with the money
next week i'm taking my piggy bank to the bank
ok i'll explane
the money i'm not smoking goes in a piggy bank that is a little pig
every morning i put the money that i would spend on smokes in
since i never went on a real vacation i will next year
i will take my hubby and go
it will like smoking without smokes
it also helps me quit
why because i know that money will not go to bills but on me and me and me

4 Noble Truths

1. Suffering is a part of life
2. Suffering is caused by our attachments and avoidances.
3. Suffering can be ended.
