One of my coworkers introduced me to the world of virtual races. You sign up for a race (5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon), payment goes towards a good cause usually and you get an actual medal in the mail.

Some are very legit and well-run, though she cautioned about a few that didn't work or she heard bad things about.

So I signed up for one called Elf on the Run (http://www.goneforarun.com/elf-on-the-run
-virtual-5k/tr-22184.html) and will be running my first 5k this week. I have to run anytime between Dec 20 and the 27th- so my aim in for tomorrow afternoon.

What's great about these is:
- you run at your own pace. Running, run/walk, walk, it doesn't matter! You're goal is distance, not necessarily time.
- you can run on your treadmill, or where ever you want!
- you can run at 2 in the afternoon or at midnight
- great for newbies
- great for people like me in small towns with not a lot of races to sign up for
- a great motivator to keep on training and earn that medal!

Can't wait until tomorrow and hoping my first ever 5k goes well. I won't be able to run it the whole way through- only on week 3 of my training here - but that's ok! I'll run/walk it and have fun doing it! And it will be a good starter point so that my next one I can say "I want to beat my first race's time."

Would love to hear from others who are virtual racers and had positive (or negative) experiences!
