WEEK 9! WEEK 9! WEEK 9!

Day two is done, and it was a doozy. BETSYTIME and I knocked out another 35 minutes, and honestly she carried me through it. I couldn't seem to get it together and wanted to quit at least three times, but I kept going. We even managed to go a little farther, 2.61 miles instead of 2.56, bumping us into the 13 minute mile bracket. I am so excited to be seeing an increase in my speed. We were supposed to go run on a trail today, but it's been raining pretty good most of the day so we stuck to the streets again. We're rescheduling our trail run for Friday and will probably get a beer afterward to celebrate our total destruction of C25K!

I agree with DHIAMBI, using the forums and finding support has been really helpful to me. When I first started SparkPeople in 2007 I didn't do much in the forums, and eventually I puttered out and gained back all the weight I lost (and then some). This time around joining a team, posting in the forums, and finding a partner helped me stay motivated, accountable, and inspired. I believe that I can keep going after this, and if I don't I know I'll be hearing from DHIAMBI sooner or later asking what the heck I've been doing!

Finished W9D2 on Tuesday, 3/1. Was a good run and even did some extra minutes. D3 is on Thursday. So good to see your post THECHAUFFEUR and way to go girlfriend. Can you believe it we are almost at the end of the 9 weeks, but not the end of our running lives. We are just getting started on the road to healthier, leaner, active lifestyle.
All the rest, I can attest to the power of posting and finding friends/support buddies. THECHAUFFEUR and I have forged a friendship and a support system. You who post regularly have also been part of the support that has helped us get to where we are and hopefully to where we want to be. I will be posting the details around my first 5K soon.

Week 9 has begun! Today was a little hard for me and BETSYTIME, but we pushed through and ran for 35 minutes, covering 2.56 miles. For W9D2 we're going to head to a local park to run on a trail and give our knees a break from the pavement.

My plan is to deviate from this last week of C25K (I was running extra last week anyway) and do 35 minutes each run this week. If I can increase by 5 minutes a week I'll be running 45 minutes each run by my first 5K, which at the rate I'm running will put me right at a 5K!

Congrats to DHIAMBI for going strong, we're almost there!

BOUNDARYH20 I agree with DHIAMBI, sign up for a 5K! It's a logical place to go from finishing C25K and it'll make you feel even more accomplished. After that you can work on improving your speed, increasing your time, or start working toward an 8 or 10K!

W9D1 completed and even ran extra minutes. Felt great and finished strong. Will soon post the 2 5Ks that I will be running in March. I started out the C25K program with a goal of easing into running consistently and without injuries. I feel confident that I am on the way to achieving that goal. I am so proud of my accomplishments. emoticon emoticon
BOUNDARYH20, do you plan on running any 5Ks soon. You could sign up for a 5K and continue training. Alternatively you could work on improving the time or depending on your goals you could increase the time that you run. There are several programs out there. There is bridge to 8K or the one hour runner program.

Did W9D1 on Tuesday & WD2 today. Saturday, I'll do the mileage for my last run.

What should I do next? Start over to increase my speed?

Thanks for the info Tipyrain. I am still working on time, and will add 3 minutes of running time (@ 10%) each week until I can run the whole 5K. (I'm trying to be super-cautious because I've had Achilles tendonitis problems before and am afraid of getting injured.) After that, I'll work on speed by doing intervals again.

Have a great week!

That's what I I am doing too! I'm about to start my 4th week working on time. The 1st time I did the whole 5K I did it in 44 minutes 33 seconds! Yesterday was my 9th time and I did it in 39 minutes 10 seconds. I wanted to die yesterday! BUT, it was my 6th day in a row running. I do intervals every other day & the same with the 5k. I'm stay around this time for a while cuz it WAS so hard!:))

If you go to the thread that says, what exercise did/will you do today?, I usually write out my run "verbatim" there.

Just finished week 9! Have to keep training to complete the distance because I'm still a little short of the 5K, but I am so happy that I can now run 30 minutes straight!

completed Week 9, day 2, Yes!!

Running 30 minutes takes some getting use too. So, I decided I will need to increase my speed. My plan is to do a 5K in 36 minutes or less. That would be a 12 minutes mile. I would love to do a 10 minute mile. I understand you automatically get faster as you lose weight. I hope that's true!

Next week I will start working on increasing my speed.

I have added my times for the full 5K at the bottom of my post. Maybe it'll help you with a plan for doing the whole thing at once. If you look at my fitness tracker the length of time I run at what speeds are on there. Have a look. Real quick I started doing the whole thing by doing the 1st 10 minutes at 4.0 MPH. And went from there. I hope you do look at it cuz I was kind of lost when I started and just got going on my own. I met a really cool person who helped me out a lot in a short time.

emoticon CINDYDORA!

emoticon For the ideas! When I do week 6 day 1 the 1/2 mile takes 6.5 to 7 minutes and the 3/4 mile takes about 10. I'm working hard doing those distances in the amount of time. Today I did the 1/2 miles intervals at 4.6 with 4.7 for the last minute of the 1st one and 2 minutes near the end of the 2nd. The 3/4 mile I did @ 4.6 also. Then I added another 1/2 mile @ 4.6. Do you think I'll improve if I stick with doing it that way and try to get the time down. The speed is what is really messin' with me!:) And I think I will benefit more from Trying to go faster for right now. But when the time drops below 10 minutes I would run at least 10 to keep up with the duration part of it, I plan to at least one long run (30 minutes) Once a week.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! I know it's almost over but it IS still the day! LOL!:))

I'm officially done. Jogged for 50 min this evening which is at least a 5K. Tipytrain, I got there by adding minutes at the end of each run as I went through the program. Not every time but often enough that I was able to jog long enough to complete a 5K. I think whether or not you do it that way or work on intervals until you can cover 5k is really up to you. I think most people get used to running longer. From what I've heard, a 10 min mile pace is pretty good.

I cannot make myself be thin today, but I CAN be healthier by making a few smart choices. I focus on what needs to be done today and tomorrow takes care of itself.

DONE!!! THANK GOODNESS! I MADE IT!!! 15 minutes @ 4.5 & 15 minutes @ 4.4! I just couldn't do the whole thing like I did on Wednesday. So, that's a little backslide. But, I still did it!:)) Plus I added a 5 minute run @ 4.5 after walking for 5 minutes. Then I walked till I got to 550 calories! Now I gotta work on time! and distance to get to 3.1 miles!!!

Anyone out there finish the program and wasn't doing the full distance have any suggestions on how to go about that in the same manner we did this program or should I just keep doing it and trying to get thru it faster. I don't do well without some structure to follow!

Today was not an official run day for me as y'all know. But I did my "fun run". I was on my treadmill for 60 minutes and burned 650 calories. It went like this. Walk 5 minutes @ 3.8
Run 1/2 a mile @ 5.0
Walk 3 minutes @ 3.7
Run 3/4 of a mile @ 4.6
Walk 3 minutes @ 3.7
Run 1/2 a mile @ 4.5
Walk 5 minutes @ 3.7
Run 5 minutes @ 4.5
Walk 3 minutes @ 3.8

w9d2 run done! 4.0 28min. 4.5 2 min. It sure is easier to run on the treadmill at work. Today was an easy fun run for me. Not sure why. I was still a flamin sweaty tomato head afterward but it felt GREAT (like Tony the Tiger).

I too talk myself into another 5min. 2min. whatever I need to get into a zone. Just like in swimming or any other exercise by yourself.

We are doing great!

Today I remember how hard running was the 1st 3-4 weeks. I had shin splints, everything hurt, but I stuck with it. I went double slow the more I hurt. Took my time...trusted the program and whoila I can now run 30min.!

I'm still amazed.

Thanks both of you SOOO MUCH for being so nice about my bad attitude!

CINCYDORA, I get that about it being good for the heart! But right now that's MY issue!:)) Dropping pounds IS! So there are many benefits to the act of running and like you said we are all in it for different reasons! Thank goodness! LOL! If we were all aiming for the same thing we wouldn't be able to learn from each other.

MOMWIFE22, I have tried to drop back and OMG!! That is actually harder! I wish I could make bigger strides as I ran. I just can't. I tried that, it didn't work either. Oh for sure the 1st 5 min. ARE some of the hardest! Then you find your groove and kind of just go. Then, you might hit another few rough spots, I know I do! LOL! Then when you SEE you have 2 minutes left it's like WHEEW 120 seconds! SHOOT I can do that! I got thru the run by getting half way and then taking it at 5 minute stints. Like, I would see the clock said I had been on the tread for 20 minutes. That's half way thru the run cuz of the 5 minute walk. Anyway! I would try not to look at it again for 5 minutes. SEE? Thinking of it in shorter terms got me thru!!!! Yep on the mixing it up!:)) I call the days I do week 6 day one for distance my "FUN RUNS" now! LOL!:)) It's an attention span thing I think! Mine is VERY, VERY short!!! That is funny in way! If I walked any faster I would get shin splints because of my stride! I don't mind that this week is HARD at all BUT, like I said if the calorie burn was there it wouldn't be SO BAD!!! I guess I want some lagniappe! HAHAH!!!!

Tipyrain, Good job finishing. Do you think it would be easier if you went a little bit slower? (hare vs tortoise story...the tortoise can go all day....)

Also, for me the 1st 5 min. are some of the hardest. You did it, that's what counts.

I was reading about increasing speed, they said to have 1 longer run per week and do 1 day of speed training...mixing it up sounds like the variety of life.

I did 3.8 on my run LOL meanwhile you were walking. Funny.

No reason for hate. We are all doing this for different reasons, have different abilites and different goals. I think the longer runs were easier than I expected because around week 5 I SIGNIFICANTLY slowed down my speed. I started aiming early for endurance and that worked for me. But I'm not focused as much on the calorie burn as I am the cardio-vascular benefits, especially since my Doc recently yelled at me about my BP.

That you are even giving this a try puts you ahead of the rest. If anyone gives you slack about doing it the wrong way, unless you are hurting yourself, tell them to shove off. Nicely, of course.

I HATE WEEK 9!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon Day 2 done today!!! I walked the 5 minute warm up walk @ 3.8 and ran the 30 minutes @ 4.5. So that was a minute more than MONDAY AND EVERY STEP WAS AWFUL!!! I wanted to quit after the walk and REALLY wanted to quit after 3 minutes of running and thought I just might keel over with 8 minutes to go! YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!!!! I have one more day left and THAT will be IT as far as the 30 minutes go! That amount of torture is just NOT worth it!!! I only burned 213 calories. But Those also include the 5 minute warm up walk & walking for 10 minutes after the run!!! I'm only doing the last run cuz I couldn't live with myself if I didn't finish the program.

I like running but I will be going back the week 6 day one and work on speed. I can burn a butt load of calories and NOT want to die doing it! If the calorie burn was even a little decent I would be more motivated! I CAN NOT run any faster yet so I'm just shooting myself in the foot. I can get the benefit of running and calorie burn doing it a different way. Please don't hate me for saying all this. I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from. Maybe when I improve my speed I will think about going longer. Shoot, I'll have to to get the burn!!! LOL!

Still happy to have done this and will continue running after Thursday!:))

Day 2 done! Did day 1 Saturday during a 5K. I am no longer trying to run extra minutes but am trying to run the required 30 minutes faster. I'm sure I've mentioned this before but that's my plan between now and the 5K I hope to run end of March.

I'm working 3 levels of speed and have already kicked it up a level from W8D3. I need to remind myself that it wasn't easy in the beginning to run 3 minutes with walking breaks so it's not supposed to be easy now to do fast intervales with slow interval breaks. That thought helped me push myself a little harder this time and obviously I'm capable of more than I was doing. My treadmill reads much slower than I actually am. I know this because I completed my first 5K at a 15-mile pace but when I push that spead on my treadmill for more than a few minutes I get side stitches. By March I'd love to be able to complete a 5K on my treadmill in the same 47 minutes it took me to complete my race. If I can do that I should blow past my road time in March!

I cannot make myself be thin today, but I CAN be healthier by making a few smart choices. I focus on what needs to be done today and tomorrow takes care of itself.

I attempted W9D1 last night but only made it to about 26 minutes in. I had been sick and hadn't run for while. Oh well. If at first you don't succeed, try try again!!

Oh, I didn't know you there weren't 5Ks there or that you're in Israel. Have you seen the Bridge to 10K program? I bring it up because it may be a good way for you to keep up the running. I sure wish you could come here and run in the many, many 5Ks in Austin, Texas.

Oh, and I did run week 9, day 2 and a little extra. I wanted to make sure I could reach 3 miles so I kept running. It took me 36 minutes, but I was thrilled to get to do it.

Good luck!

Sadly, 5k's are not something that is done in my country.
I just missed the very first Israel Susan Komen race which took place in Oct. but I found out about it late and I would not have been ready for it anyway. I am hoping that it will take place again next year.
My sister, who is due to run her first half marathon next week, said she will see if there might be a 5k happening in March or April. That would be after the worst of winter and will give me time to road train. I am starting it but am going to take it slow.

Enjoy your run today!

Congratulations, Samaara! Way to go. I've been battling allergies or a head cold for the past two or three weeks now. (Typical for me for this time of year!) Ironically, I always feel the most clear-headed after running. I hope you do to!

So, when's you're 5K?

I get to do W9D2 today. I'm hoping to make it to the 2 mile marker on the bridge, which will actually equal a total distance of 2.75 or 3 miles for me. Woohoo!

It was difficult with the head cold and sore throat, but I went a little slower than usual to breath easier.
Does this mean I graduate? emoticon

After living here for 20 years, anything below 65 is hard to take. So with you on that one.

Today I was supposed to just walk. And I really did try to do just that. But I threw in a few, tiny runs in also. I think I did it just because I could. I am so excited to be a runner I can hardly stand it!

Pam -- if were keeping the same pace, I most definitely want to go for a lunch time run with you. Let me know if it's okay to email you and set up plans.

Samaara, you can do it! Running outside is great!

Cheryl, glad to see you in Week 9. I ran approximately 2.5 miles on each of my 30-minute runs, so we seem to keep a similar pace.

Today, my plan was to do another 30-minute run, but it sure is cold and windy! Maybe it will die down by lunch time.

Good luck to you both on reaching the finish line! So exciting!!!

Pam -- Congratulations! How exciting to finish and to know how long it'll take you to do a 5K.

Hello Week 9! I am thrilled to be here. De-Lighted. Ec-Static. I finished Week 9 Day 1 today and ran (I guesstimate) about 2.5 miles. From the local newspaper to the bridge over MoPac. My plan is to run again on Wednesday and on Friday I will participate in the Lights of Love, a 5k fund-raiser for the local Ronald McDonald house! Woohoo!

Just finished Week 9 Day 3. I made it through the program! I wasn't sure I could do it, but I made it through with flying colors!

Today I ran a full 5K, 3.1 miles, outdoors. It took me 38:30, so my pace was 12:25. I'm okay with that. I ran a 5K! WoooHoooooo!

Never, never, never give up.

Thanks on the info on treadmill/outdoor pace! I feel a bit less discouraged. Yesterday I did W9D2 on an outdoor trail in Houston. It was hot and frackin' humid as heck. But I managed to do 2.5 miles in exactly 30 minutes. A tiny improvement. Tomorrow I will do Day 3, and want to keep going after the 30-minute mark and see how long it takes to hit 3.1 miles. Yesterday I couldn't have kept going. But tomorrow I'll run in Austin and it's actually cold out now. So that will help. I shall report back tomorrow from the finish line!

Never, never, never give up.

Day 2 done this morning. I slowed down a tad to see if it would feel a little better at the 3km mark and it really did help.
Won't do Day 3 till next Tues. or something, because I am going to try and run outside again on Sun. I hope I won't need more than a day to recover this time.

Happy Thanksgiving!

pamatx. I graduated yesterday I started running at home on the treadmill in the garage so no one could see me. With the better weather I tried running in w6 outdoors and it was so different I had to do week 6 for nearly a month it was like learning to run again but glad I did it. emoticon emoticon
