Welcome Dionne!
You can do it Brittany!
Just back from vacation on Friday, did a small local race for a Gulf War Memorial Saturday. Came in last by about 2 min but was pleased as I got a PR of 43:02. If I was only 3 months older I would have come in 2nd in my age group but had to settle for 6th out of 6 in mine! emoticon

PR = personal record.

I got my PR for the half marathon (which, since it was my first was going to be a PR no matter what) I completed it in under three hours.

5K went well today. My kids both got PR's again! Rotten kids! I got a 32:17 time. My foot was bothering me somewhat today. I think because I worked all weekend. It was sore before the race today. I signed up for the virtual race at the end of October as well, 10K. Gonna see how it goes!

Thanks Shari. That's why I couldn't find the C25K on SP. Sounds like you've got a plan! And looks like you have a lot of races lined up....that's great! I have a bunch also. I'm planning on 3 this month and 3 next month. I'll have to check out that virtual race. I haven't joined any challenges yet. Good luck with your running....WO!

Chris, I think an 8K and 5 miles are roughly the same, I think I should be able to safely increase 2 miles in just under 2 months. I also signed up for the SP virtual Trick or Trot the last week of October. Even if I have to run/walk it, I will get a feel for that distance. I am also going to sign up for JASR (Just a Short Run) in Pittsburgh march 31 (about 2 hours away) the 8 mile distance, that way I can gradually increase to the half marathon distance next October.
SP has a Spark your Way to a 5K program, but the C25K (Couch to 5K) program is on coolrunning or coolrunnings.com

Anne, where do you find this C25K program? Is it through SP? Wanted to take a look.

October is fast approaching. Sounds like we all have some races ahead. My half marathon is 10/15. Don't think I'll be ready. I'm not running very far yet but I have been adding elliptical in with it. Trying to keep it non-impact for my foot but still have the aerobic component so I don't die out there! We have 3 hrs to complete it. Right now I'm going about 1 hr 15 min. per day with both exercises included. I think if I can get to 2 - 2 1/2 hrs I should be good to go.

Shari, 5 miles is a great goal. Is that an 8K roughly?

Thanks, Chris - you are right it is a PR for all running and yes it is the first time I have completed that distance w/o stopping.
Anne - I too am just trying to increase my time/distance there is a Memorial 5 mile run in late October I am going to try, then my ultimate goal is to do a 1/2 marathon in Myrtle beach in October 2012. Since I have relatives that live there, would incorporate that into my vacation.

The feeling of running the entire way is such a great feeling.

I've been repeating the C25k week 9, which is 30 minutes and because I'm slow, I've probably been covering around 2.6 - 2.75 miles is my guess. I have completed a couple of 5k's running the whole way, but the last half a mile was really hard to do. So, I have just started a podcast that is 5k to 8k, which increases from 30 minutes to 50 minutes over 10 weeks.

My next 5k race is the beginning of October.

Awesome job Shari! Is that the first time you ran the whole way? 'Cause if so, that's a PR for running! I used a pace calculator - if it's accurate that they moved the finish line 0.1 mile, then your 5K time would have been 43:46 if you kept the same pace. WO girl! Anne, do you have any races coming up?

I can't believe it but I ran the whole 5K, no walking! My official time was 45:11. but everyone was saying that they had marked off the 5K and then moved the finish line about .1 mile farther to make it an easier finish line. Oh well, no PR this time! My new profile pic is me getting ready to cross the finish yesterday!

Chris, great time on your 5K and so glad your foot is not bothering you, I too am glad that my hip pain is gone although I do spend a good bit more time stretching now after I run. Ah, youth! I wish I would have started when I was younger but in H.S. and Jr. College I only ran to train to play bball. The kids had great times and definitely not Penguins!
I think I am going to try running another 5K on Sat. A Church in Accident, MD where a lot of my in-laws go is having a run to benefit one of its members with health problems. I think it will be a small group running, but we will see. I drove the course yesterday and there is a few slight hills but a lot of flat road also. Best of luck on your Labor Day race and I will let you know how mine goes on Sat.

Hi Shari! Great job on the 5K. Sounds like it was a tough course! My 5K last nite went very well. Results aren't posted yet, but I think I finished 4th from last. Small field, about 58 runners. It was a "fast" course so I got a better time than I'd hoped - 32:53. The main thing is that my foot feels perfectly fine! Both of my kids ran and got PR's - 24:18 and 24:15. They are not penguins! They're ages 15 and 12. I'm so glad they are interested in running, although they love to rub it in that they always beat me! The half marathon I'm doing is all on crushed limestone and it is a gradual decline all the way. Sounds perfect!

I'm doing another race on Labor Day in Washington County PA. Somerset is about 2 hrs from me. When is your next race?

Chris, I was very pleased with 5K results, especially with only being able to run for 2 1/2weeks since being off with IT Band problems. I finished in 43:29, which is a PR for me as my 1st 5K I ran in 44:34. I ran the race I wanted to in that it was a 1 mile trail so they started us a little ways off the trail to get in the extra .1 mile. I ran all the level, downhill and slightly uphill sections which ended at the 3/4 mile sign on the trail and walked the big hill on each loop.
Overall, a great experience and was pleasantly surprised that I beat my last time! Hope your 5K goes well on Tuesday, be sure and let us know how it goes!
So far both races I have done have been in Somerset, PA which is about 45 min N of where I live on the MD border. I am going to try to do JASR in Pittsburgh in March and if the Pirates have another 5K will probably try to be there for that. My aunt lives in Myrtle Beach and I am going to try to do the 1/2 marathon there in Oct 2012!

Welcome MarathonMom! I will be pleased when I can run 12 min/mile but I am still a beginning runner and am just back from IT band problems!
Yesterday ran 2 miles without stopping in 29 minutes on a trail/track at a Community College where I am doing the 5K tomorrow.
I am working on building distance with a goal of running a half marathon in October of 2012. Will work on slightly increasing speed later.

This is too funny! My friend and I always close our emails to each other with "WO" for Waddle On! This is my group!! I'm not exactly a rookie to running but I definitely qualify as a penguin! Average 12 min. miles and getting slower! Just happy to be out there running at all. History of feet issues. At the age of 25, I had a podiatrist tell me that I would be lucky if I were still able to walk by the time I reached my 40's. That's when I started running. I've been off for a short while due to a mild case of plantar fasciitis in my left foot and am starting back slowly. Running 1.5 miles this week, and I plan to increase by 1/2 mile a week until I can comfortably run 3 miles several times a week. Then I will start long runs (well, longER runs) once a week. My goal is to run a full marathon in 2014.

Brand new to Spark People. Great to meet you all. WO!

Great to have you back, think about it, 25 minutes of running - that's really good, doesn't matter how fast or slow, just think about moving for 25 minutes straight.

I was travelling for work and could only do the treadmill and I much prefer being on the street. But when I got back and ran on the road, I think I was slower, but I ran for 35 minutes, wasn't too fast, but it is better than I could do last year or even earlier this year.

Hi everyone, just working my way back in my running since IT Band problems sidelined me. Yesterday I was able to run for 25 minutes but definitely not fast, actually a little slower than I was before, and I wasn't fast then! Going to run/walk a 5K on Saturday and see where I am! Glad to be back!

Congrats on increasing your distance! I've heard great things about the Galloway method. I'm doing something similar with Podrunner's gateway to 8k right now. I've been running every other day and swimming 3 days a week for a little over a week now and I am hungry all the time too. I dealt with it by changing my goals today to get more calories.
If you find that your calories burned in your fitness tracker is exceeding your weekly goal by a lot you'll want to update that to make sure you're getting enough to support your exercise and not be starving all the time.
I hope light chocolate ice cream works as well as chocolate milk! I had a half cup with a tablespoon of peanut butter for my post-run snack tonight.

Hi fellow waddlers :) I'm so glad to find all of you on this site! I am currently running/walking 3 times a week. My 2 short runs are approximately 30-40 minutes in length and my "long" run is based on distance so the time varies. Yesterday I ran just under 6 miles. I am attempting to train for a 1/2 marathon using The Jeff Galloway method which is walking and running. Currently, I run 4 minutes and walk 1 so it's a nice easy 5 minute increment I focus on. I definitely am seeing some improvements but it's SO hard. The hardest for me is that with the increase in running, I'm also seeing an increase in hunger!! I'm trying to make good choices, but that's hard! I'd love some suggestions on how to deal with that. Also, I did learn a trick from a friend who is a very successful marathon runner, he said within 45 minutes of running drink some chocolate milk to avoid muscle soreness the next day. It has worked very well for me! I hope it works for you guys too!!

Today is a non-running day and tomorrow is a running day. I look forward to spending time here discussing running!!!

Welcome, Mommydearest 3! On this thread you will find people who are impressed with beginnings, middle parts, and endings! When you decide movement is good we celebrate it.
PenguinPlata super kindly put John "Penguin" Bingham's name up (I could not remember it - then I forgot I was supposed to look it up- egads!). John has his own webpage and it is worth checking out. Have fun in your race for fitness.

Welcome, Mommydearest 3. Sounds as though you're on the right track.

Terrbear, the original waddler's name is John 'Penguin' Bingham.

My first 5K was done in 49 minutes or so. Close to the end, my friend wanted us to sprint for the finish line. I didn't have it in me. I was exhausted, having completed 3.1 miles even though it was super slow.

My second 5K was still slow by some standards but I was delighted with 36 minutes. Plus, I was recovering from eight miles the day before AND I rode my bike to and from the race, then took the dogs for a long walk afterwards. I did sprint for the finish line this time.

Hello everyone! Fellow penguin here :). I started the C25K program back in January, and got through Week 6 before I kind of petered out. But I did keep going, and would try to run for 2 songs, walk for 1 song. I've never been fast - the best time I've had in a 5K was 39:59.

I joined a Walk2Run group through my local running store, and it's been great! The first week we did 2 min/run, 3 min/walk and did that 6 times. Now we'll be up to 8 min/run, 2 min/walk this week. I'm so happy I can actually do that now.

I have two 5Ks coming up in the next few weeks - one has ice cream sundaes at the finish...lol!

Emily088, Welcome! It is such a pleasure when we finally are able to make the move from walking to running. And "we" the runners get to define what we determine to be running! Do check out the original waddler (his name escapes me but another reply to this post has it) his page is fun.
Take care. Keep on waddlin'

I'm so glad that I found this forum / topic! My DH (lovingly) makes fun of how slooooooow I run! LOL He quickly retracts whatever his criticism is when I remind him that a year ago I could only walk - now I'm actually running! For the past few months I have been running and I have improved my pace - I'm now going a little faster than my walk pace! It truly doesn't matter to me as long as I stay healthy, enjoy the sights and sounds, and feel as if I have accomplished something.

I too am a penguin or a waddler. I just finished my 3rd 5k. I've improved on my time, but came in last. People still cheered me on though, thought that was nice. The good news was I had a couple of runners in front of me in sight, it was good so I didn't feel all alone. I will keep at it with the hopes of improving a little at a time.

PINGUINAPLATA - I'll definitely check out the Jeff Galloway training program. Thanks for the tip!

This is so exciting seeing all the discussion going on this topic. As a waddler's waddler it is good to hear other voices and be encouraged by what everyone is doing. I've been on somewhat of a forced hiatus and am anxious to get back into running. So, I salute you Penguins all.

There is a famous runner/coach called Jeff Galloway who advocates alternating running with walking, for distance runners. The program that I'm using suggests a ratio of five minute run then one minute walk, repeated over and over. That really works well for me.

I started with four minute walk, one minute run then every three weeks, the coach changed it up until we were running four then walking one. That was the C25K program. The 10K program is a bit different but the half marathon program is back to the 5:1 interval. After coaching hundreds of runners, the coaches have found that this is what works.

When I first began, the one minute run was near impossible for me. I needed the whole four minutes to recover. And then we did it again, for 30 whole minutes. Who would have ever thought that I'd be training for a half marathon?

Welcome PINGUINAPLATA! I recently discovered John Bingham, and his website is a tremendous inspiration.
Congrats on training for the half-marathon. That is my next goal!

KIMIKO - I found that the races keep me motivated, keeps me running. Now I am trying to decide if I want to try a half-marathon this fall. I think I'll wait to see how the 10k goes before I make a final decision.
My advice is to keep running. When I started six months ago, I would have never imagined running one mile, let alone being able to complete 7 miles.

Bingham is amazing. He let us all know that it isn't all about speed. My main goal is to get healthy and build endurance so that I can run a half in a year.

How perfect is this? I signed onto this team today and found a topic about Penguins. PinguinaPlata means Silver Penguin, in Spanish. I've had that nickname on another forum, for a long time.

Sometime after starting waddling, I read about John Bingham. He is my hero. His books and articles have inspired me.

A while ago, I read a blog by someone I knew, who talked about running with a group who could only manage an 11 minute mile. She didn't even break a sweat (poor girl!) What she didn't get, was that for some of us, an 11 minute mile is an elusive goal. My rate of perceived exertion tells me that a 12:30 mile is a good workout. Most importanly, I've learned from my hero, the Penguin that the numbers aren't what matters.

I'm signed up, and training for a half marathon. Sure, I'll be slow but the miracle has already happened. I started.

KM, I admire you for doing the 5k's and registering for a 10k! I have yet to have the courage to try any. I have finished the C25k program and am doing the Bridge to 10k. Just finished week 1. Yesterday, I am pleased to say, I finally broke a 12 minute mile. Don't know yet if I can do that more than once tho. lol

Hello, all! New to SparkPeople, SOOOO GLAD to find this topic.

I started running in January, and I am definitely a waddler! I've finished two 5Ks, and I am now training for a 10K on July 4th. My speed (or lack thereof) sometimes frustrates me and gets me down. However, after my long runs on Saturday morning, I feel GREAT (even if it takes me 2 hours to do 6.5 miles.)! I enjoy pushing myself, and seeing what my body can do.

Oh gosh, I'm for sure a penguin. This is my nine billionth go at running, but my most successful go at it. Also, my third time on the Spark Boards.... I do love running tho. I am slow but steady. Definitely plan on "Waddling On"
