Fast Food Genocide by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. with Robert Phillips

Fast Food is food that we can get it fast, eat it fast, digest it fast, and it is assimilated into our fat cells fast. It seems to be what we crave and it is slowly killing us so that we die prematurely

There are 6 characteristics of fast food:
1. Digested and absorbed rapidly
2. Contains multiple synthetic ingredients
3. Calorie dense
4. Nutritionally barren
5. Highly flavoered
6. Contains excess sugar and salt

The food industry has conditioned humans to prefer, crave, and eat their products instead of real natural food. This is done without any consideration of the consequences of the health of those who eat their food-like products.

Joel Fuhrman is linking the fast food we eat with behavioral problems we face and notes that crime rates and lower academic scores are more prevalent in areas where there are "food desserts" (lack of easy access to fresh produce and natural food)

Joel states that Modern fast foods are specifically designed to deceive human metabolism bt limiting outward symptoms of illness; fortified and enriched just enough to keep us from displaying or dying from acute deficiency. Our unhealthy diek destroys us from the inside out and goes unnoticed until disease is manifest. However, before disease manifests, we suffer from learning disabilities and depression.

One the opposite side of the spectrum, eating more fruits and vegetables will increase our psychological well-being and 'happiness' levels.

What we eat affects our personality and our personality affects what we eat.

Joel also refers to how we should eat for our health, G-BOMBS
G - greens
B- Beans
O - Onions
M- Mushrooms
B- Berries
S - Seeds and Nuts

That is eating Joel Fuhrman style and this book points out the ill-effects that our addiction to fast food can cause (chronic disease). He ends with his solution and gives a two-week meal meal and some recipes.

I give the book a 4 out of 5 stars. Dr. Fuhrman's suggestion that the fast food industry is at the bottom of our high crime rate is indicated, but he is careful to state that it is not conclusive and more studies need to be done. However, he makes a good case for supporting it to be true, in my opinion.

One thing I do not like about Fuhrman's G-BOMBS way of eating is that he does not emphasize eating whole grains in his plan. I, for one, need to include those in my diet otherwise I get too hungry. Although he does mention them in the chapter about what to eat, he keeps that information in the background. I believe it is because not including it is what makes his plan stand out from the other whole food plant based plans that are out there.

I do like how he is taking a stand against the food industry and is making us aware that the fast food diet we are so accustomed to eating is killing us and affection our behavior, then gives us a solution.

The Pleasure Trap by Doug Lisle

The motivational Triad:
1. Seek Pleasure
2. Avoid Pain
3. Conserve Energy

This describes what we strive to do: feel as good as possible, as much of the time as possible and to do it with as little effort as possible. Ha! I just described the drive-through experience at McDonald's for many people.

Whole point of book is to break free of the Pleasure Trap set by the food industry and to do so we have to go against our natural instincts. There'll be discomfort in eating a whole food meal, it'll take time and effort to prepare health supporting food.

I'm reading 'The Makers's Diet by Jordan S. Rubin. Pretty good read. He sites a lot of medical research from 100 years ago and it makes me wonder why doctors and dentists aren't more aware of this stuff and passing it on to their patients. For instance, a Harvard educated dentist studied people groups from around the world in the '30s and concluded that what we eat determines the state of our dental health. Hint: Sugar is NOT our only problem.
