I thought it would be too much when we initially put in the plants but I used what I could immediately and made alot of stewed, sauces and salsa and canned and froze throughout the harvest. My harvest was fantastic and usually is. We had a variety of tomato plants. My husband gets a mix of dirt for gardens from a local nursery and each year we till a new scoop into garden. I had a bad season a few back due to too much rain but other than that, our system seems to work.

they even taste better and have flavor than what you buy in the stores, plus when you go into the stores you will smell how they smell rotten too.

Thanks for your replies. I have a seed tray and think I will start them at the end of march so I can transfer to garden. I just started getting into planting seeds and started with growing lettuce and herbs in deck pots over the last two years. So far so good. I can't wait to try tomatoes this year, and need to see all this snow go away and spring to appear to get my gardening fix!! Last year I had 25 tomato plants which cost me my right arm to buy the plants from a local supplier. This year my goal is to increase the types of vegetables and edible plants for less costs.

Buy an inexpensive seed tray---but don't start them too early unless you want to move them to bigger pots----also need a sunny window.

They are real easy to grow. I have thrown them in my garden and got plants from them. I also got plants from tossing tomatoes that I did not have a chance to eat and they started to go bad. So they are real easy to grow. Just don't over water them or they will drown.

Hello! I live in Northeast PA and have been gardening for years. However, I never started tomato from seed and recently ordered heirloom seeds and a few other varieties from a catalog. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of seed planting?

I think that happened to allot of people all over this country with the tomatoes. Not sure what is going on with that and yes you need to rotate the plants

I have heard that putting a banana peel in the ground when you plant them helps. My tomatoes did not do well this winter. I hope my spring garden does better!

Start saving egg shells---rinse them out---when you plant them, put a good handfull in the hole. Also, best to not grow them in same spot each year---I alternate spots---but I did not have much luck last year either, think the lack of rainfall.

Hi Everyone!

Spring is around the corner and I'm eagerly planning my garden again. I've done square foot gardening for several years and have had excellent success and pleasure except (isn't there always an exception?) for my tomatoes.

Is there anyone who might be able to help me? They did well the first year in my sq.foot garden, but less so in following years (and yes, I tend to the soil!). I've tried putting them back into a larger garden area, planters, pots, and last summer I tried a couple of those "hang upside down" contraptions. I think I had a total of 8 tomatoes, beautiful plants, just no fruit.....I have tried all kinds of varietals including heritage tomatoes, but no go.

Any advice or thoughts from you all that grow copious amounts of tomatoes would be greatly appreciated!!

Much thanks,
Gail
