Thread from 2011-2013 so entertaining. I've been playing wow for over 10 years now. I find way more girls playing than before! I think 1/2 the toons in the guild I'm in are girls! :)

Looking for strength and encouragement!

There are more girls that play wow than people actually realize.

In all the guilds I have been in, our raid groups would typically be 1/3 to 1/2 females. I seem to find nice guilds that don't do the "oh is that a female?" bit when they hear you speak. All the guilds I have been in, not one person in the guild had any reaction to someone being female, and there would be several in the guild.

Pug groups on the other hand... I hate pug groups. I almost refuse to talk in vent if it is a pug group. There was once I did ICC 25 during Cataclysm (thus it was old content). We did have a full group. I finally said something in vent a little past half way. Half the guys were like "oooh is that a girl... Hi how are you? You need help?" and the other half started dissing me. They were saying things like I must me fat and ugly. I must not be able to meet guys. I wanted to smack them.

I have not really been hit on in the game. However I have had guild members who I knew were interested. They were nice though. They did not try to meet me or start some online relationship. They just became online friends I regularly played with. A few I actually text with and there is nothing weird going on within the texts.

I kinda laugh when I talk about this with people, but it was actually my wife who got me hooked on WoW. she was playing long before I ever did. They're all like "no way, SHE got YOU into it?" don't know why people find that so strange. she's every bit the gamer I am, which is why I married her :D

emoticon Nice to know there are other women/girls out there playing WoW. Kids and men can be so skeptical about that. When I first started raiding back in BC for kara and such, they said I was too good of a player to be a girl. I proved them wrong when we used Vent. LOVE it.

Lol, this thread reminded me of yesterday when I was getting some tech support from my ISP because I was only getting 15mb instead of 35 that I was paying for. As the guy was doing troubleshooting he had to control my computer. On my desktop I have all my game icons in the center, probably about 20 of them. He exclaimed "Wow someone in the house is a hard core gamer" and I said "yeah thats me." I could tell he was pretty surprised, and we had a fun little game discussion while we were waiting for his upper level techs to figure out what was wrong with my connection. After an hour, they said they needed to escalate it up to another higher technician and I mentioned that I had a raid going on in 1 hour so after that I wasn't gonna be available. He said, "Oh I understand, the guy who is gonna work on this also plays wow, so he knows how important that is and he'll get right on it!" Forty five minutes later I get a call and everything is fixed =) Sometimes being a wow player has its perks lol.

I was running a dungeon with a guildie and he aske me a question in party chat using my IRL name. On of the other players said, " Wait. Thats a girls name. Girls don't play WoW." We thought he was joking, but apparantly he was serious. We still laugh about that.

On top of that I was just elected Guildmaster of a guild where I am the only active female. Woot!

My responce to "Girls don't play WoW"...You're right girls don't play WoW...Women do!

My favorite is definitely that all women who play are fat and ugly. I remember being in a BG with my fiance and people were giving me crap saying how I must be huge and ugly... dumb kids. But that's a huge problem with the game... so many kiddies playing.

I also love that the girl I work with told her boyfriend that I play WoW. His response "Wow, is she an ugly whale?" When she said no he didnt believe her... then I guess she told him how I love Star Wars... now he's really skeptical lol

Finish the Spartan Sprint in under 2 hours- my fiance and I will be getting matching spartan tattoos!

Love this discussion. I once was told that if I really am a female player I must be ugly because all wow female players are ugly... emoticon
FYI- he took it back when he saw my myspace pic.

I also saw in chat "women shouldn't play wow, they should go back to the kitchen"

My boyfriends and male friends love the fact I play games. The ones that don't are ignorant.

I don't see anything wrong with a guy who has a similar interest wanting to talk to you no matter where you are. I'll talk wow with anyone- guy, girl, hermaphrodite, vegetarian, you name it lol, and I wouldn't begrudge a guy wanting to talk wow with me at a gym if he over heard me. Now if he asked you out and you weren't interested- all you had to do was say, "that's sweet, but no thanks" and be on your merry way. I have dated several guys I met on wow. I'm actually about to hit my 2 year mark with my boyfriend, whom I met on wow. WoW people like to meet other players irl. Give the boys a break. I'm proud of him for having the courage to go over and try to talk to you- good for him!

Now as for GTAICHOU, what server are you on- seriously... I am in a decent guild and I'm one of the top healers and there's plenty of other females in guild, but we're not "respected" or treated like "just one of the guys". There's a lot of negativity in wow towards women. There's a lot of negativity in general towards women from the gaming community. And don't get me wrong, i'm very good friends with all my guildies and I do feel like a vital part of the group, but there is still that vibe that women cause drama or want special treatment or just generally suck unless they're playing a healer- and even then sometimes r bad. It's great that you have that kind of environment and that you can turn things around on the boys- they need it badly.

Also- for the record, I have been followed, given gifts, invited to guilds, run thru dungeons, and the list goes on all for playing female toons on wow- just so happens I am a girl irl =)

It really is hilarious. I love hearing your stories, mainly because my confusion is the other way around. They swear I'm a guy until they wander into my guild's vent and hear my voice. There are a lot of inside jokes about me being a temptress though because of the sound of my voice, so they will gang up on the outsider and taunt them with the fact that I'm a girl. It's really funny to listen to.

We have several girls in our guild, and all of us have a lot of fun with that fact - one of them sounds exactly like me (which freaks me out, it's like an out-of-body experience!) It's really hilarious to pick on the guys and show them up, or to have it happen to us in return. It's great to feel like we're on an even level with them, and to be respected like we're just one of the guys.

I'm an 85 female Nelf named Sorayah. :)
I get frustrated when guys hear me on vent when we are raiding and stuff because I hate the perverted comments I here. I also love that when I talk in trade chat, everyone tells me to stop talking like a girl because I'm just posing.
My Valentines gift last year was the game and I get very frustrated because I see both sides. I think it stems from the amount of immature people that play the game though so I just ignore it.

My main, Marallenne on Gorefiend, is a female Belf. Never that I can remember (which doesn't mean it didn't happen - I can be kind of scattered) has ever followed me around, tried to give me stuff, or tried to bed me for being a gamer chick.

I take that back, there was one. I felt so bad having to break his heart.

Anyhow, I have been told it's because I talk so much like a guy in text. *shrug* That and "THERE ARE NO GIRLS ON THE INTARWEBZ" (Probably also because my BF and I leveled together. He probably whispered off all the competition lol)

I honestly don't get that much attention. Usually the only time anyone says anything is if I randomly group up with someone and after a while someone will ask if I'm really a girl. And that doesn't even happen that often. Once, however, I was hired to prospect some ore and cut a few gems, so the guy was chatting to me while I did so. He asked me if I was really a girl, I said yes, and then he would NOT leave me alone.

However, I'm not surprised I don't run into much trouble. I'm often playing with my boyfriend, and our guild is a "real life" friends only guild. Nice and small, and everyone knows everyone else personally. It was slightly amusing, however, when we randomly grouped with someone that asked us for help, and he asked if we knew each other. My bf only said "yes", but I said, "This is my boyfriend." Dude bailed on us because he refused to be grouped with "homos."

I haven't gotten hit on in WoW, but it used to happen a lot in Aion. Either I was getting hit on or griefed, which is why I'm playing WoW.
I'm too busy with DPS to notice trade chat raunchiness. All my toons are female, mainly b/c I love character creation (I do miss Aion for that) and male characters aren't fun to create.

Lol I love this thread. I have seen mild flirting in game but most of the nasty raunchiness takes place in trade chat and I don't get involved in all that. I am very lucky my BF and I play together and we are in the same guild which is made up of lots of wonderfully nice and considerate people so its never really been a problem for me.

I do agree though that the boys in game really think girls don't play or that we need extra help when we do. Thats when it's always to fun to have a friendly duel and own them : )

I must be doing something wrong...or maybe it is because I am the Tank....and I'll be 50 this year. I get the omg you're a girl and then...you don't sound that old, and then, hey lady want to tank for us so we can cut queue.

I don't think anyone has ever given me anything, except for on my birthday last year. Someone I helped level gave me flowers, and someone else made me a choco cake...mmmm virtual food, no calories.

No bf and no hubby but if people hassle me, I just hit /ignore and they don't raid. LOL

Been playing a long time now, almost 6 years and lots of other MMOs before, all the way back to table gaming blue box dnd. I like when you find the nice people to play with.

I am so psyched to see this discussion; we love our female guildies and in fact, one just volunteered to be our guild's quarter mistress because our disorganized guild bank was making her nuts! As a gay man, I actually play all female characters in large part because you get better hair and clothes in game that way and also because I feel like women are underrepresented in-game. Oh and did I mention that some of the best tanks I've ever had were women?

I have all female toons but I never randomly get hit on, though some guys in my guild like to flirt with me a bit. I talk in vent all the time though and it's no big deal... but I think a buddy of mine (this guy my husband and I have known and been in guilds with for years now) talked me up a lot when we joined, and also made sure everyone knew I was happily married!
There was a moment when we were waiting around in our raid the other night that one of the officers commented on how nice it'd be to have a female raid leader because there were too many guys talking, and I chimed right in and they all swooned! It was funny emoticon

When people flirt with me in game though it's not ever offensive, I enjoy the attention. People also tend to warm up to me quickly and I like being social in game so I tend to make friends quickly, which is just fine to me!

I must be lucky, not only do I hardly ever get hit on but I'm in a guild with a lot of girls. We just made the GM put in a ladies weight loss channel in vent so we could chat there without boring the people in the lobby. There are four of us trying to lose weight but sometimes there are like 10 of us girls in vent and no guys they prefer to talk in guild chat. Probably so they don't have to listen to us chatty girls.

Actually, ERM, one of the guys from Penny Arcade set up a laptop on their treadmill so they could, in fact, play WoW while they worked out. Obviously, he can't do anything really in depth, but he can still grind or do the easy stuff on it. It was kind of a ghetto rig, but still amusing.

I play with my husband as well, and we're in a really nice semi-casual guild that has 2 or 3 other girls in it. So I rarely have anyone making a big deal of my lady-ness. Besides, who wants to hit on a female Tauren anyway?

I didn't know girls played Wow. I get told we are all just prepubescent boys with a gender identity.

I love playing WoW. I play with my husband, and since I work a lot, it gets a lot of stress out just thinking about non real life things for awhile. Only problem is you cant play WoW on a treadmill...lol.

I had a priceless one the other day; a jerk of a player was upset that I killed something while he was waiting for it to respawn (nowhere in sight, I had no idea he was waiting). There was name calling going both ways, he was going crazy. Then he figures out I am a girl and the next sentence I get "ur a girl?" "yes" "wanna *&@#?".

It really is hilarious how guys are so amazed that girls play games. I grew up with them. I got an NES when I was 5, and pretty much got every Nintendo, PlayStation, and XBOX console after that.
My MMO addiction started out with EQ around 1998 and then to FFXI and then I started playing WoW. Luckily my boyfriend plays WoW too. He can protect me from the WoW guys. :p Although, most of his toons are girls, and so are mine. It makes things interesting when we do flirty emotes. Lol.
Being a computer nerd is pretty rare for a girl too. I just graduated from College with Computer Systems Technology diploma in Canada. I was one of three girls in a class of 50. It was pretty crazy. Luckily one of the three girls in the class became my best friend. I'm pretty sure most of the guys were afraid to talk to us. Lol. It was humorous.

Yeah I get the "OMG you're a female thing". Typically I drop the husband thing- most I dish it back at them. Both my husband and I are pretty vocal in vent. We get retarded. For a long time I had a friend and we raided a lot together... So we declared ourselves "online lesbian lovers". Of course most players are male, take of course hit on females, but I ignore- if I am not up to hearing it- I dont talk in vent. I run with a lot of different poeple and they all know my husband too, so they typically leave me alone.

All my toons are female and luckily I don't get hit on too much. instead I get asked if the one behind the toon is M or F and when I say i am female they call me liar that women don't play wow. That they are soul sucking fiends that just want to steal a guys playtime shopping. I usually want to just reach thru the screen and smack them but i just use the convenient ignore option instead.

(Game Stop hires females???!! I have yet to ever see a female in the ones here unless they are shopping for their kids or hanging on the boyfriends arm) As my husband and I are massive gamer/anime nerds we surf through the game stores and such often and when I join in the conversation about games the clerk or guy in question usually looks to my husband and says something along the lines of "dang lucky where did you find her?"

I usually cut things short by saying, "yes, I'm a girl, but I'm old enough to be your mom...or maybe your GRANDMOTHER." LOL.

When I made my first blood elf I had one guy follow me around for 2 days asking me to be his girlfriend. The third day when he started I hopped off, made a male Belf, tracked him down and asked him to be -my- girlfriend. He sure logged off fast. Yes, it may have been a bit rude but so is stalking someone in game. emoticon

I rolled a male character once, Nelf druid, playing him again now. .but I loved it when I rolled him, no one hit on me, no one tried the cyborz! and the few times I did talk on vent while playing him the reaction was priceless. Had one guy whisper me trying to figure out who the chick was! Took me about 10 min of me laughing and him trying to sort it out before he realized he was actually whispering "the chick" the whole time.

Funny story: In Warcraft, you should never assume that the toon reflects the player... but in EQ, at least on our server, it was TABOO to play cross-gendering. And I got a LOT of help and gifts and stuff. My husband said it was because I was a girl. I said "no, it's because I'm friendly. You play but you never talk to people."

So he made a girl toon. Yeah, you guessed it. He got lots of help and gifts and stuff.

Eventually I went cross-gender, too, played a male toon (I would have done it in warcraft too, except the male toons are UGLY. Jeez. you can tell there's no women on the design team. Seriously, guys... women don't want men that look like that. No.) and discovered I was about half right. I make friends more easily than he does, even when people think I'm a guy.... but he makes friends a LOT quicker than me when people think he's a girl.

(as a further side note, it's really interesting to have private conversations with other men complaining about their girlfriends when they think you're a dude... totally different perspective.)

XD I "borrowed" my bfs headset when he was raiding ICC last night and talked to his friends. Who were pretty cool. None of them were creepers.

I had one guy come up to me with "hey babes" when i was trying to kill the damned white spider for the spinneret. Ugh.

XD I know what you mean on that point. Unfortunately all the game stores around my area are dominated by male employees, who have heartattacks if I start speaking "gamer". Theres only one that has a female employee and they're to expensive to buy consistently from. *nods*

ugh.

I'm the 'omg who just spoke' or 'holy moo....was that a girl' when I get into vent. I've given up. I raid with my boyfriend exclusively, so I let him respond/introduce me. It usually stops the idiots.

If I get problems with in-game guy friends greeting me with 'hi sexy!' or something, I let him play my account for a while and tell them it's not me =P

I've never had people try to give me things or follow me around, but I see what you mean.

As for being a gamer...yes, I am a female gamer sorority girl nerd extraordinaire. Yes, I work out at the gym. Yes, I hang out at Game Stop. It gets SO ANNOYING when there's about 7 male customers in the store, I walk in and the 3 sales people immediately all try to help me. I can't decide if it's that I have boobs that attract them, or that I am the 'helpless female' who 'obviously knows nothing' about gaming and is there for a christmas present for her brother/dad/boyfriend/son/best friend/anything that is a guy.

I now only shop at the one with 3 female employees. I've not seen a male there since my first day.

Nah. I haven't really been hit on in-game, either. Maybe it's the lure of blood elves to teenaged boys, but my only odd experience was some guy following my female Belf rogue around Ghostlands for a night or two, offering to help and opening a lot of trade windows to give her gear.

Anyway, I didn't mean to sidetrack the thread. The original post makes an important point, and it's one reason there are health clubs that only allow women.

I guess I'm one of the lucky (?) ones. I've never been hit on in-game. Hmmm...maybe I should feel insulted!

XD I remember the first time I started playing WoW, I was a blood elf (what my bf calls a Belf) and before I ever even got out of the starting area there was some random guy following my character around and hitting on me in Spanish. Unfortunately, I understood most of what he was saying. That is NOT something you say to a newbie... Or anyone.... Without their permission...

I'm still a newbie, unfortunately. Played for about a week on the belf, but that same guy was always on, so I deleted my character and gave up. Until recently. Now I have a Night Elf Druid and I am slowly losing my soul to the WoW gods. lol

Sounds sensible.

But there's always another side and another story.

In my real life, my exercise has mostly come from swimming laps from oh, 1964 to now. When I was in my 20s, friends and at least a few women I went out with, two of them serious relationships, started with conversations at the pool. It's not what we were there for, but we had a common interest.

In WoW, I occasionally play female characters, and while people mostly don't assume game gender is real-life gender, sometimes you can tell they do, at least in the starting areas. You start getting gifts you don't get with male characters.

But guys can be odd in general. I still remember, years ago, someone with a blood-elf character roleplaying hitting on my wife's undead character. The whole run, he was telling her how hot she was. We laughed a lot about it. She pointed out several times that her elbow bones and spinal cord were showing. Sometimes they're just going to hit on SOMEONE.

Yes, I play WoW.

Yes, I raid ICC and have downed 10/12 in ICC 10-man.

No, I will NOT sleep with you, or cyber with you.

GYAH!

I was talking raiding with one of my friends on the elliptical, and almost immediately after I hopped off, the guy who'd been on the stationary bike in front of us came over and started macking on us.

While admittedly, I appreciate that he was macking because of our interests, rather than strictly looks... dude. Seriously. 1) don't hit on women at the gym. That's NOT what we're there for. 2) if you're in doubt about hitting on a woman at the gym, please see rule #1.
