I try not to get too bad but when the munchies attack I'll have 5-10 almonds and a piece of fruit or some popcorn. Not good but usually the extra protein helps.

I'm a Dr. Oz fan, so I keep almonds on hand. About 4-5 almonds and a big glass of water, I'm good.

Jelly beans.

I know I shouldn't but I'll take about 5 then get a drink or try to distract myself with something else.

Thu Sep 24 Nutrition Question of the Day:

Do you have a go-to snack to help tide you over on occassions when you have an urge to eat but know you are not really hungry? Or do you just hold out and wait for it to pass?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Me - I chew way too much sugarless gum in the evenings. Not really sure if this has become a crutch to help me keep from over-snacking or if I'm now addicted to Nutrasweet or whatever fake sugar is in this stuff. Something for me to think about.

my dh has put a filtration system on our water lines so the water is fairly pure. So I drink it from the tap over ice or boiling hot. I don't like luke-warm water. yuck...

At home I drink it from the tap with a 1/2 a packet of Crystal Light lemonade.

At work I use Brita filtered pitcher that I keep in the fridge always mixed with Wild Strawberry Crystal Light. Without the filter, the water leaves a nasty aftertaste even with a flavor packet added.

I only drink plain water after a workout and the only time I drink anything else is an occasional Gold's diet tea when they have it in the cooler at work.

How I drink my water...
- straight up or over ice? - usually a few cubes, but not necessary
- bottled or from the tap? - tap. We have whole-house purifier/conditioner
- plain or with added flavoring) - plain as can be
- only in the form of coffee or tea? - get all my water requirements in plain water form. Also drink several cups of coffee each day; but don't count these as water.

We have an unfiltered well so we have a water cooler for drinking water. We've had it for years so I am quite spoiled by having hot or cold water on demand. I also buy bottled water for exercise class and I\it really doesn't matter to me if it is cold or room tempurature.

Looks like we were all having the same type cuisine. DH & I went out. I had a great chicken burrito with a little rice & salad. A few too many chips perhaps & that wonderful margarita that I was trying to avoid. LOL Only one though & still within my calorie range although at upper limit for sure.

Chicken Fajitas with peppers fresh from the garden, onion, grilled chicken, salsa and whole wheat tortillas. Maybe with 1/2 slice of reduced fat pepper jack cheese on each tortilla.

For religious reasons I don't drink alcohol. But I still like drinking calories whether it's cocoa, fruit drinks or soda pop. I need all the fiber I can get to fill me up. I feel like I'm always hungry and drinking empty calories is self-defeating for me.

I LOVE Margaritas!!!!! I also love beer, but only if it's on tap. My favorite is Blue Moon with Orange Juice, it's soooooooo good. Having said that, I'm with you guys, I don't want to drink my calories, I rarely drink alcohol in any form now. In fact I think it's been like 3 months. Now that I've started jogging again, I HATE the way I feel if I've had alcohol the night before. So, for NOW (only now) no alcohol.

Like you, Sheena, I don't want to drink my calories so I rarely drink alcohol. But about every 6 weeks or so, I will cut loose and drink waaay too much but I try to stick to wine or I sometimes will mix some vanilla vodka with my Crystal Light Wild Strawberry.

I'm with you on that Sheenadee. Both the chili and preferring to eat my calories than drink them. I don't drink very much but I still drink the same things. I do it so infrequently that it doesn't make too much difference. I just skip a dessert and drink more water the next day while lowering my calories.

Thu. Sep 17 Nutrition Question of the Day:

We talked about soft drinks a few days ago. Now what about hard drinks. If you have a cocktail or other alcohol beverage, have you changed what you drink since becoming more health conscious?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My answer: Yes. For a while there, a good margarita was my drink of choice. Now I stick almost completely to wine. Always did like wine & it is not horrible on calories compared to many mixed drinks. Easier for me to sip it too rather than take big gulps. LOL Regardless of drink choice, I probably average 2 or 3 nights per month having anything; I prefer to eat my calories rather than drink them regardless of form.

You guys have great suggestions.

I'm the chili queen. I love it, I make it all the time in a million different ways. I've stopped using shredded beef, I've tried bison, chicken and venison and Pork. Pork, bison and chicken work the best, venison grosses some people out if they aren't expecting it; plus, DH and I don't hunt, so the only venison we get is what friend give us. I don't love it, but it is lean and can be tasty.

Tue. Sep 15 Nutrition Question of the Day:

If you take a dish to share at a friend/family function, have you changed the type dish you take now that you are perhaps paying more attention to your nutrition?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My answer: Yes. I have become the queen of fresh fruit appetizers. I have a good fruit dip that I have made for many years; but used to only make it around the holidays. Now, I often take fruit to share & make the dip for those that want a little sweetness on their fruit. I have a little dip; but eat most of my fruit plain.

In other shared dishes I've made some healthful substitutes like always use the low fat version of cream cheese in appetizers...people never even know. I use whole grain crackers to go along with it.

Now, I will still eat some less-than-healthy foods too, especially homemade appetizers which can be my downfall. But I try to always have something like the fruit option available to help me keep from overdoing too much on the bad foods.

They say moderation is the key to change but I've never been big on moderation. It's all the way or nothing for me. It must be my personality. lol No wonder I'm having a tough time losing weight, I can't make the decision to go all the way to change my eating habits. Still eating the cake, chocolate covered cashews etc. etc. etc. emoticon

Oh my, don't think I've given up on cake (or treats in general) just to reach my goal!

If someone made me a chocolate cake with peanut butter icing, I'd be the first one in line with my fork and you better not skimp on the piece! But that is the standard by which all cakes are measured in my mind, it must be homemade, chocolate, with peanut butter icing. If it doesn't meet those criteria, I'm not eating it.

I think of it as the same as someone saying I hate cooked carrots, but I'll eat them raw. It's not that you won't eat them, but you prefer it a particular way and don't want to eat them otherwise.

One other rule is, if I can walk into any corner grocery store or gas station and pick it up, it's NOT a treat and has no place in my diet.

I've never been very good at moderation so adopting these little "standards" seems to be helping me.

Think highly of yourself because the world takes you at your estimate.

I'm with Montanagal. I will not give up my chocolate cake (or cocolate anything for that matter) but I can have a cake and only eat a small slice and I've learned to ignore the rest and let the guys eat it. It has taken me a while to get to that point but if I think I CAN'T have something it makes me want it all the more.

I DO love angel food cake with strawberries and Cool Whip Free though. YUM!

Well, for my birthday last year we went to Fred's in Butte, they have this great 10# chocolate cake. The slices are huge and I LOVE it; so I ordered it, I ate a few bites, dh ate a few more. The we took the rest home and ate small portions for the next two days. Not the healthiest alternative for sure, but I didn't eat the entire piece (like I wanted to) and I REALLY enjoyed it.

It might say something about my commitment to a healthy life, however, because you two have already met your goals and I'm still 30# away. Still, chocolate cake is not something I'm willing to give up altogether. So having said that I guess it's going to take me a little longer to get to where I want to be. But, that doesn't mean I won't get there. emoticon

Last year, I skipped any cake or cake-like item altogether. It's just me & DH here so didn't want something lingering around.

This year, I'm challenging my DH to have a healthy alternative to surprise me. I think he'll do good; but, we'll see. BD not til Nov.

That was really nice of your co-workers, BRIAN36. They must be paying attention to your habits.

My co-workers brought in angel food cake, strawberries and fat-free cool whip for my birthday. I thought that was really sweet of them.

I love my sp nutrition tracker. I would be lost without it. I'm very far from my goals but feel I would be even further if it weren't for the tracker. Even my fitness tracker is essential to me. I have had some lazy days recently and my weight is showing it too.

It is well with my soul.

Thanks for your responses, everyone. I think it helps us all to know what others are doing & what has worked for them.

I forgot to give my own answer. I also use the trackers (both nutrition and fitness) daily. I've been in maintenance for a little while; but still feel the need to log my food to keep me honest. I tend to conveniently forget what I've eaten if I don't log it soon after (often during) eating. My goal is to get to the point that BRIAN36 describes & just use it to spot check; but I'm not there yet.

I don't use it as much any more cause my computer is so slow that it takes longer to log my food than it does to eat it. emoticon

I don't use the tracker on daily basis anymore. I will use it to spotcheck every few weeks just to make sure I'm not getting out of line with calories. If I've had a particularly bad weekend of eating, I will use it for about 3 or 4 days in a row, to plan my meals and counteract the damage.

I believe it is essential to use it daily if you are trying to lose weight or just starting out in maintenance. It was key to my weightloss. You need to use it for months to make sure that you are getting the right nutrients, learning portion sizes and control and training your body to eat within that calorie range.

Do you use the SP Nutrition Tracker daily?

If not, why is that? Don't need it to keep on track any more or just don't have the time to mess with it?

If yes, do you think it helps you stay on target?

I used to drink alot of regular Mountain Dew sometimes 6 or more cans a day. My first step to weight loss was switching to diet Mountain Dew. It wasn't until I joined Spark that I replaced soda entirely with water.

I've never been a soda drinker, so that isn't a big deal for me. My big thing is snacking. I work from home all the time and there's always something tasty in the cabinet, I just have to walk away and I really do feel good about myself when I do and it is getting easier for sure.

I've given up sodas entirely. Figured if I was going to limit my calories I'd rather eat them than drink them. I don't even miss them any more although that has taken over a year.

Fri. Sep 11 Nutrition Question of the Day:

Since beginning your SP journey, have you changed your habits regarding soft drinks? For example, did you switch from regular to diet sodas?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My answer: This was a huge change for me. Previously, I drank 5-10 Diet Cokes per day. Although they weren't adding direct calories, I knew this wasn't exactly healthy. I have replaced all that pop with water now & probably average a single can of pop a week.

I'm with Jaycee. My dh doesn't like when I cook with whole grains but refuses to cook for himself. He gets bent out of shape if I don't buy his precious wagon wheels or aged cheddar cheese (NOT lite because it doesn't taste the same) I'm at my wits end. The grocery budget only goes so far.

Haa! I live with 3 men and they don't want to eat what I eat, but when I buy them food they eat mine. I've decided I'm not buying junk food any more. If they want it they can buy it.

I've tried switching to whole grain pasta and dh says he hates it. I bought whole grain wheat flour and mixed 1/2 with regular flour and he hates it.
They complain when I cook and they complain when I don't.

What's a poor woman to do?

Thu. Sep 10 Nutrition Question of the Day:

If you have additional people in your household, do they generally eat the same foods as you? Or do they have a very different way of eating?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My answer: Overall, my DH and I eat very differently. Our sandwiches tend to be similar: lots of good chicken or turkey breast in our lunches. But all other meals are pretty different. There are a few dinners where we eat the same & he just has more of it & I often prepare an additional side for him that I won't eat. We are generally on pretty different schedules though & so aren't always eating together these days. Hopefully, that will change some soon.

I go through periods where it's different; but overall I'd say I average more frozen, closely followed by fresh, then canned in last place. There are times when I have much more fresh (especially when our tomatoes are ready).

It's probably a toss-up between fresh and frozen. I don't use a lot of canned veggies except diced tomatoes and I only use those when I've run out of home-canned.

I always eat breakfast and lunch at home (unless there's something going on that I have to be out, which is rare) DH and I eat dinner out way too often. I usually get a grilled chicken caesar salad with dressing on the side. That's pretty safe and I like it.

I work from home some days & in the office others.

When my friends are in office too, we always go out to eat. There are a couple regular places we go. One is a local chili place; my meal there isn't exactly the healthiest but I have altered the size ordered & remove most of the cheese so that I still end up with a well-balanced day. In the 'old days' I ate there 2 days a week; now it's once or twice a month. The other usual spot is a great Mexican restaurant. I get a pretty healthy (and great tasting) chicken burrito & skip the tortilla chip side.

If I eat alone, I either pack something or buy the healthy choice meal in our cafeteria. I always pack some fruit or yogurt to have at work for a snack.

I pack every day. I work in a hospital that has both a snack bar and a cafeteria. The snack is exepensive and pretty much a nutrition bomb. The cafeteria has a healthy choice menu item every day and a salad bar. But the healthy choice item is usually less than appealing. Sometimes I will get a salad to add to whatever I pack if I'm short on veggies.

Mon: DH & I went out to dinner. Between the margarita, extra tortilla chips & practically licking every bit of burrito off my plate, I overdid it by a few hundred calories today. I guess that's not exactly special holiday fare; but, I ate it on a holiday. Could have been worse; but soon as this margarita wears off, I plan on some exercise to work at least a little of the excess off.

It sounds like you all had nice days. That's great!

Nothing out of line today. Yesterday I was at the Canfield Fair so my senses were reeling from all the fair food fare. Found a grilled chicken breast, coleslaw, applesauce and roll for $4.75. Big splurge was cinnamon roasted almonds which I shared. Passed on fries, elephant ears, and strawberry shortcake that others had. None were very tempting. I passed them up saying I wanted the almonds and waited till it was just about time to leave before I got them.

I love to roast hot dogs (I know gag), and eat s'mores; it's an end of summer thing. I bought turkey dogs, we'll see how that goes over. I'm going to eat and enjoy on this last big summer HooRah! Then tomorrow, I'll do extra exercise and get back at it.

Sun/Mon. Sep 6/7 Nutrition Question of the Day:

It is a holiday weekend. Did you have any special occassion foods? Anything that makes it any more difficult to stick to your nutrition plan?

My Sunday answer... so far, so good; but we aren't doing any partying today. We did go out for breakfast & I splurged by having a pancake with real maple syrup; but, stayed in good calorie range anyway. Will see what tomorrow brings.

I usually tell myself during the week that I can eat whatever I want after my long run on Saturday because I burn no less than 1200 calories on top of my BMR of 1475. But generally once I've ran for 10 miles, there isn't any food that seems worth it.

Think highly of yourself because the world takes you at your estimate.

I couldn't be that good at Cracker Barrel!

I let myself have whatever I've been craving all week for dinner Saturday night.

Sat. Sep 5 Nutrition Question of the Day:

Do you have a special treat that you save for the weekends?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My answer is yes, I go out to breakfast usually once each weekend with my hubby. He loves eating breakfast out & sometimes goes by himself during the week. I go with him on Sat. or Sun., almost always to Cracker Barrel. I get one egg, one turkey sausage, whole wheat toast...not too bad compared to all the other menu options.

Snack? Of course I snack, although not as much anymore. I have to have something in the afternoon to tide me over till dinner. I gave up evening snacking to take my meds at bedtime. They have to be taken on an empty stomach 3-4 hours after eating. My favorite snack when I can't live without something sweet is a few jelly beans.

Oh, yes! Morning snack, afternoon snack, and depending on how early dinner was or how late my workout is, I'll have an evening snack. I eat about every 2-3 hours.

My rules for snacking are they shouldn't be more than 200 calories, they must be healthy, and the evening snack has to be more protein than carbs.

Friday Sep 4 Nutrition Question of the Day:

Do you eat snack(s) each day?

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My answer is: Most definitely! I allocate a good number of calories to snacks (afternoon & evening) every day. Could not make it through my day without them.

Good for you Brian36 that you didn't eat that bagel or pie.

Good for me that this question didn't come up last week when I made fudge. emoticon

The worst thing I ate today was Jelly Belly jelly beans. They are my weakness when I want something sweet.

The day isn't over yet, but so far it was the dried kiwi slices. I think they were the worst only because I think they had a light sugar coating.

I did however pass up Panera bagels this morning and pie tonight.

Ohhhh, I do so love homemade cookies...which is why I have given up baking them.

For my Thursday it was pretzel crisps.

Uuuummmm...No, pretty sure Cool Whip has no nutritional value whatsoever. LOL But it did satisfy my raging sweet tooth, though. A couple years ago, that would have been 2 packages of Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls and a bowl of ice cream, just to hold me till dinner.

If I'm going to throw moderation out the window, at least I can lessen the damage.

I'm guessing the healthiest thing I ate today would NOT be the two, three, four huge spoonfuls of Cool Whip Free I had when I got home from work. I'd have to say the Bruschetta Veggie chicken patty on whole wheat Arnold Sandwich thin I had with lunch would overall have to be the best. I got my carbs, protein and only a little fat along with veggie and fiber all in one fell swoop.

Rather than a weekly nutrition challenge to start September, I thought I would do a Nutrition Question of the Day type challenge for a while. This will run at least the first week of September, maybe longer. It all depends on how quickly I run out of questions & whether or not anyone participates. So here we go...

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wednesday, Sep 2 Nutrition QOTD:

What is the healthiest single item you ate today?
(Could reply with healthiest thing you plan to eat if it is still too early in the day for you.)

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

p.s. I must confess that I am doing this same challenge in another team that I lead. But, I don't think there are many if any members that cross over between the two teams so hoping no one finds this repetitive....just could not think up 2 different challenges today. :-)
