I agree the body needs carbohydrates, but I find that any shop or restaurant seems to have more than 90% of it's produce containing a very high amount of carbs and our body has become accustomed to this way of eating, as I have been too may I add. and to cut out a majority of sugars is what suits me and makes me feel good and energetic while having the added bonus of losing weight.
I would never agree with anyone cutting out carbs, as to cut out an entire food group would, I agree, leave the body lacking many vitamins and minerals, but i do believe that being conscious of the amount of carbohydrates is important in any eating plan .

I think there are hidden sugars in the foods that people are eating, people think they are eating wisely when they may not be.. Typically, Low Fat labeled foods could contain a lot of Sugar, take a low fat yogurt for instance, a pot could possibly contain up to three spoons of sugar. this is unfair to the person who is trying so hard to retrain their eating habits.
I try to look at the sugar content of foods as well as fat, protein etc.....
I would hate people to be fooled by clever labeling. I feel that a lot of the food cravings and binging while trying to change your eating habits are because of sugars (carbs) added by manufacturers to add taste to compensate for the reduction in fat.. This is just my own point of view. I don't wish it to deter anyone in the way they are losing weight, whatever works for you go girl (or fella of coarse).

Excellent points regarding vitamins and fiber Scott.
As a Diabetic, I have to watch my carb intake very carefully, and it is essential that I take a good multi-vitamin with minerals, Calcium, and make sure that I eat plenty of foods that contain fiber. Watch out for the fat in meats and cheeses though!

Just a bit of a caution for the low carb folks....Our bodies need carbohydrate for food energy and to help us work and think. Here are a couple of points to consider

* Foods with carbohydrate have important vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, vitamin C, folic acid, potassium, and magnesium. Cutting out carbohydrates puts you at risk for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. - You might want to consider taking a vitamin supplement if you are on a low carb diet.

* Carbohydrate-containing foods are important sources of fibre in the diet. Fibre has many health benefits including blood sugar control, reduced cholesterol, and bowel health.

* Not all low carb diets are created equal. Some low carb diets encourage lean meats and healthier fats, while others permit bacon, butter and other foods high in saturated fats.

I believe that education is KEY for any diet. We all have the best of intentions, but sometimes we can actually do more harm than good unintentionally. I encourage everyone to educate themselves. SP puts a wealth of valuable information at our finger tips so with a small time investment we can become informed dieters.

Good luck everyone!!

Scott

Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks :) I've often seen users referring to weight in stones but wasn't sure how it converted to lbs.

That's great about the blouse! :) I too have a few different clothes that I try on as I'm losing. It's a great way to tell how your body is changing even if your weight doesn't seem to be.

not sure if this is what you want but there are 14 lbs in every stone. I put a blouse on last week and couldn't close the buttons as there was an inch of a gap. surprise surprise today i was able to close the buttons. I'm going to keep this blouse as a gauge to see how i'm doing, going to try it on every week to see hopefully how loose it gets. Have you any tips that are working for you.

I'm not really following a low carb diet through planning. It seems that the choices I've been making just happen to be lower in carbs. I was pretty surprised because I used to eat a lot of them. My dad was recently diagnosed with diabetes and part of his treatment is to follow a low-carb diet so I bought low-carb for dummies book. Maybe I should actually read it though. lol

How do stones compare to lbs?

Hi Team, just wondering is anyone else on this team cutting down on carbs as a way to lose weight. I find that when i tried counting calories I was constantly hungry but with lowering the amount of carbs this wasnt a problem. Also I love cheddar cheese and meat.. yum cannot stay away from these.
