Probably getting back to walking daily since the knee injury. My next mountain is to get to 10,000+ steps daily!

As a newbie, I am still in the Fast Break stage. I am a little timid about striking out, but,.... Today I began my exercise program and I do believe that I can do this. I have tried several Spark People recipes and I am picking up steam. Keep them coming!

My personal mountain is figuring out what causes me to retreat into myself and use food as a crutch while avoiding trusting others. I am making some awesome treks here and my guide has me secured to her rope so i don't slip back down the mountain.

My mountain is the one that detemines portion control! I am still on the uphill side, but I figure I'm about 7/8's of the way there. I've made great progress in the last few months and am feeling very good about it! *S*

My very real hill is outside my apartment. We live in the hilly part of Mississippi and my apartment is at the bottom of a hill. Coming from the flat land in New Orleans, you cam imagine what a challenge this is. I physically attack this hill at least 3 X wkly. I think I am winning. Oh my aching back.

My steep hill is dealing with my mom who absolutely loves pasta and sweets!! I have to fix them for her and it's so hard to not go overboard around them because they have always been my downfall.

Having much in common with farmerpj, there are many new steep hills and mountains that I've endeavored to accomplish since Jan. 30, 2010. (I had a change in medication which helped me get out of my fibro-depressed-fog state that I've been in for at least 4 years.)

1. Getting out of bed each morning before 9:00am
2. Taking my vitamins every day
3. Using my pedometer every day, reaching for 5000+ steps by early afternoon
4. Packing and moving out of our house and into apartment to sell house by next month
5. Working to bring Christopher back home (in group home for behavior disorder)
6. Cooking dinner every night
7. Romance my hubby
8. Start Spark nutrition/exercise journalling
9. Go to Church each Sunday
10. Attend more sports activities of grandkids

Everyone has lots of hills to climb. One that took me a while to get over is my husband's health. We used to do lots of active things together including racquetball (a favorite) but then he was diagnosed with a very rare and progressive disc disease in his back which has made it impossible for him to run at all or even walk long distances. He's also in a lot of pain much of time time which is hard. I stopped doing a lot of active things because I couldn't do them with him anymore. The last few months though, I've really started walking and getting my 10,000 steps in. He's been very supportive and helping out with our 13 month old son in the evenings to make sure I can get my walking in. I'm still working on finding a new racquetball partner, it's been years and I'm very rusty... but I'll get there.

The mountains I've conquered have been resisting the tempting goodies that my husband keeps bring home and going for a walk everynight alone when everyone else is relaxing & watching TV.

Recently, I had to insist to someone that I did not want to try and/or share their meal. Even my dad was trying to get me to just eat it. I said NO, I just came from my WW meeting and my plan is to eat something healthy. They backed off and then started asking me questions about my healthy lifestyle. Kinda cool!

My steep hill is that I need to get more organized and make time for the things that are important. There are days when I'm so busy that it's a struggle to make time for eating healthy and fitness. If I could plan my time better, I'm sure I'll be able to fit in all the things that I need to do.

Still climbing...

My conquests include:

1. Eating better so that I now consume 4-5 fruits and veggies a day.
2. Can do 60 minutes of cardio, when six months ago 15 minutes left me winded.
3. Can now lift 8 pounds, but remember 3 pounds seemed like a cinderblock!
4. There was a time when 5 minutes of strength training left me sore for days, now 36-42 minutes three times a week leaves me feeling rejuvenated.
5. Depression had me bedridden for weeks, now I only experience one week out of the month, but can manage it with minimal disability.

So…I would classify my hill grade as 25%, although I haven’t literally climbed a hill. Still, considering where I came from and how far I have journeyed. I’m doing pretty darn good…yep, I am.

My steep hill is emotional eating and I certainly didn't conquer it this week - but I'm trying. This week it seems as though everyone I care about has had a traumatic situation arise, and I just take it on my shoulders. I have made a plan to "step" it off versus "digesting" it off.

Arthritis has been a pretty constant companion the past year or two. I've had good weeks and bad in the past, but have had more bad than I'd like the last while. It felt like I was spending all my good days on work and spent my days off recovering.

In January I started some new things and have had more good days so I'm hopeful that I'll be able to be as active as I want to be. It is a huge step forward to feel good more days.

What steep hill have you conquered recently on this path to health and fitness?

Scheduling time to get my workouts in. Now that the hubby has gone back to work, it is my responsibility to get our son off to school so couldn't go as early to work out as before, but have gotten some things squared away and have a friend that can take son to and from school so that I can continue to concentrate on getting my things done.

My steepest hill recently was dealing with Kris leaving for Afghanistan. It hit hard but not as bad as I expected. Of course the fact that I talk to her almost everyday helps. Yesterday finally got the webcam working and was able to see her, that was cool.
My next steep hill is getting rid of a lifetime of emotional baggage and so far it is going okay.

You can only take one step at a time, it is best that the step is forward, not back. But even a backward step is exercise! LOL

Just watching what I put in my mouth was a steep hill for me and then forcing myself to move after years of sitting behind a desk. I think this was the toughest, I had to force myself to do 10 minutes, now I'm up to an hour, more if I have somewhere to go.

Learning to maintain my weight and slowly lose the remaining 6 pounds of my new goal.

Besides maintaining my food plan, I have to have a healthy ratio of steps to aerobic steps. If my aerobic steps are too high, my appetite increases. It requires constant tweaking.

I'm still climbing my mountain dealing with extra people living here that don't like to following house rules and give their fair share in the daily comings and goings of a household. Hopefully I will be on the down side of my mountain soon and be able to say I didn't fall and bust my nose in the process! Here's to another day and making the best of what should and could be a better situation.

I've had to rework my meals due to a scheduling change. Breaking the routine!

What steep hill have you conquered recently on this path to health and fitness?

Monday I had to get serious again. So I am back to logging all my food. No tastes! I am focused. I hope I stay that way.

Yesterday I made a humongous goal of mine: climbing up and down the very steep (52% grade)of Camelsback hill. A very awesome experience. And, I went down the same steep grade path and didn't fall. It is symbolic of course!

What steep hill have you conquered recently on this path to health and fitness?
