Hiked 4.4 miles today. Trail was dog friendly, but I left the two greyhounds home. They've proven that 2 miles is their max distance in the past! They'll get a short walk 'round the neighborhood this evening to make up for it!

I tend to put it off, too, Molly. Rio loves to go outside and find the one place grass won't grow to lie down. Comes in looking like a dark chocolate greyhound instead of black sometimes! Jade only gets dirty because they share a ginormous dog bed and she picks up Rio's dirt. I just take them right in the shower with me. They aren't thrilled about it, but behave and it is easy. :D

It is warm here in Ohio too! My greyt doesn't really like to go out when it is this hot. She will however, go find a sunny spot in the yard and lay down in it...go figure

Slept in late today (til 6:00 a.m. haha). However, that meant it was already getting a bit warm here in Phoenix, so we walked 20 minutes instead of our more normal Sunday walk of 30.

Hey team,

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. It is raining here in Ohio but that is better than all the snow we were having in Feb. We had the snowiest Feb on record this year.

Sorry that I am not around much. Doesn't mean that I am not thinking of all of you. Work and marathon training take up most of my time. I feel like all I do is work, sleep, eat and run. It is good though and I am not complaining.

Continue to start new posts and chats. If anyone is wanting to be a co-leader or lead the team, just let me know. I would be more than willing to let someone else who can lead the team better take over.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I got some good runs in this weekend for my upcoming marathon. I have a long way to go but getting some longer runs under my belt feels good.

I also watched the Ohio State Buckeyes defeat Michigan State today which was a huge road win. I am a happy girl.

Glad to hear it was nothing serious. I tend to get stiffness in my neck and shoulders quite a bit.

So our snow total was about 8-10 inches. They are predicting another 5-8 over the next 36 hours. Hopefully they will be wrong about this storm. I guess at least I should be happy that they got the roads pretty cleared up from our weekend storm before this next round of white stuff hits.

I bet you don't miss it! I enjoy it if I can just stay in the house and I don't have to go out and drive around in it. Right now I think we have 6+ inches.

Sorry to hear about your neck. Nothing serious I hope.

Pretty good except for a sore neck. We are just getting rain down here in GA, but I hear there is a potential of 2' of snow in my hometown in NJ. Everyone stay safe up there in the North. I don't miss it all!!!

Gosh, I can't believe it is December 1! This years seems to be flying by.

Hope everyone has a great week.

Just a friendly reminder... the holidays can make it really hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you need support, ask for it. We are all in the same boat. I think that is a good place to be for week one. Don't worry about getting off your schedule a little bit especially since it was a holiday weekend. The important thing is that you got your training in emoticon

I am getting a little freaked out knowing my marathon in only about 6 weeks away. Our 20 mile run is this weekend. Training has definitely been harder for me this summer than it was in the winter session.

One week down for training.

I got a little off for the weekend and ended up doing my mileage run on Monday instead of Saturday. I did 3.1 miles in about 47 minutes. That is right in the middle for the two 5Ks that I've done, about 50 minutes and 45 minutes.

Well training officially starts today. I'm doing my first workout when I get home from work this afternoon. Walk for 3 minutes, run for 1, repeat 8 times.

I also started a blog to try and keep me honest and on track so if you are interested in following my training you can check it out here:

Keep us posted on the half training. I am running a half this weekend but it is suppose to be really hot and humid. I am hoping since we are running so early that it won't be too bad.

You obviously are doing something right to keep maintaining the weight you are at. It is hard to say what will happen when you start training for your half. Some people gain weight and some lose. For me, running makes me very hungry so it is really easy to lose weight especially since being a carbo junkie is a good thing when you are a runner. Lucky I have no problem with that one.

I am jealous about the hiking. Would love to get out sometime and do that.

Just a quick hello.

Did some hiking this weekend but the extra weight and extra altitude made it quite a challenge. Plus we accidentally took the hard way up instead of the nice moderate trail LOL

Training for my half officially starts in a couple of weeks. In the mean time it's just tri class and the occasional evening stroll in the park.

Still sitting around 162, which is surprisingly fine with me. It nice to just be one weight, even if it is higher that I would like it to be. At least it seems to stay the same. I'll probably focus more on what I'm eating once I start training but its been a nice change to not be obsessing over everything I eat.

The foot is finally better and as long as I stretch like I should I think it will be fine.

I've been doing ok on food. I haven't been tracking like I should though. After DH left I threw out a lot of the junk food in the house so overall I've been eating better things this month, just sometimes I still eat too much of them. However I am able to comfortably tighten my belt a notch tighter and the scale has gone down a couple of pounds.

Get to go to Utah this weekend. I hope to do some hiking but that will depend on the weather, hopefully it won't be too hot.

Hey everyone,

we have a couple new members. hope you have had a chance to stop by and welcome them to our team.

hope everyone is having a greyt week. it's been busy here. i could really use some R&R but I don't really see that happening much.

i am trying to get back on track. i need to start tracking my food again and chatting with all my spark friends but like everyone else, i am struggling to find the time. i did log my food everyday last week (even my bad days).

only bright side is that I am getting in all of my training runs. i guess that is one plus.

Katz, hope the foot is feeling better. let me know.

Talked to my sister this weekend and she thinks my heel is just boring plantar fascitis. I've had it before but in the other foot but it was the other end that hurt. She just said to stretch my calves more and showed me what to do.

A great run/walk program is the one outlined by Jeff Galloway. Here is one link to some of his stuff. This is probably one of the most respected programs out there as he was a huge pioneer of this technique. www.jeffgalloway.com/

Went back to tri class for the first time in 2 months last night. My instructor was glad to see me back. It was a hard workout, I can tell I've been slacking. But I didn't do as bad as I thought I would, so that is a plus.

I also found out that for signing up for the RnR half marathon in Vegas I can download a free training program through active.com. I went with the walk-run one which never goes beyond equal walking/running interval for just 3 minutes or so.

I was afraid it might be too easy but I figure I can always lengthen the running intervals if I feel good as I train more. The run-walk one didn't look too bad and I felt like I was somewhere in the middle of the two. I just didn't want to get the run-walk and then get frustrated if things were above my level or I wasn't progressing like I should be.

The training program starts at the end of August so until then I'm just going to hit the park a few days a week and try to ease back in to a little more running.

Did the All-Star Charity 5K yesterday. The temps were in the lower 70s which wasn't too bad but it was really humid. I ended walking probably a bit more than half. Other than being a bit sore and muscles a little tense I feel fine, my foot as hardly bothered me.

My time yesterday was 45:28, my time for the Pig was 50:12. Of course I think I could have done the Pig a bit faster but was being cautious since it was my first 5K. Overall though, not a bad a result and I glad that my foot finally seems to be on the mend!

I tried running a little bit last night and my heel seems ok this morning. Of course I was just jogging really slowly and for less than 5 minutes. But it is an improvement.

My husband keeps telling me to get it x-rayed but I don't think that is necessary. It only hurts at very specific times and I think that if I had a stress fracture it would hurt all of the time. I'm leaning towards a possible tendon issue. I'm supposed to go visit my sister in a couple of weeks and she is a physical therapist so I'm going to ask her about it and get some stretches.

Sorry to hear that your heel has been bothering you. I hope it is nothing serious.

I am struggling running in this heat. I can't even image if the heat index were to be up at 100. I think I would be hitting the gym.

I will keep my fingers crossed that your house sells quickly so you can get out to Utah to be with your hubby. I am sure a few days alone (not counting the kitty) would be nice but I know I would probably miss the companionship after a week or so. I wish your hubby the best of luck on his new job. Keep us posted.

Wow, it has been crazy here.

The 5K is this weekend. But my heal is still bothering me a bit so I imagine I'm going to walk most of it. I might try a little running to see how it feels but I know I can't run the whole thing. :(

I've had a crazy few weeks so I'm way off track now. We had a couple of weeks where the heat index hit 100 at 9 AM and didn't go under 100 until 9 PM. That put a damper on the outdoor activities.

Also my husband moved to Utah last week. His job there started. I'm stuck in St. Louis until the house sells or I find a job out there. I figure at least it gives me sometime to focus on me and exercising and eating right. Plus I imagine I'm going to have more free time on my hands since it is just me and a cat at the house now LOL.

Signed up to do another 5K this weekend. I'm going to do the MLB All Star Charity 5K in a few weeks. Curious to see how my time will compare with the Pig.

My most recent thing is I did something to one of my heels. It feels ok when I wear shoes but feels bruised when I'm barefoot just walking around the house. That seems to be going away though. I think I just got a little over excited and tried to do too much too soon.

There was a coupon for the run for $20 off the registration for the new course announcement so I decided to go for it. I've already booked rooms too so there is no going back now! LOL

Congratulations. I am so excited for you emoticon

As far as injury. Expect a lot of aches and discomforts but listen to your body. If anything is painful, pay attention. I often have achy knees on and off or an ankle that is stiff and sore, etc. One clue is if the minor aches are effecting your stride. If you have a aliment that is making it impossible for you to run in your normal stride, you should listen!

Running slower may help. Incorporating walk breaks (like the J. Galloway program recommends) may also help. For your first half marathon, you should not be focused on time. You will complete it in four hours. Training is hard. Consider continuing with 1-2 days a week of cross training. Make sure that if you do a long run, take a rest day afterwards.

Make sure to keep us posted.

Signed up to do the Rock N Roll Las Vegas half marathon. There is a four hour time limit so I think I'll be safe. LOL

Lately though I feel like everytime I try to run a bit I hurt myself, my knee is achy or my foot feels bruised. Very frustrating. So I've been walking only the last couple of weeks and I'm going to start from scratch running next week.

I think part of the problem is that I've been trying to run faster and my joints just aren't ready for that. So I think slowing things down again will help. Or at least that is what I'm hoping....

Hey everyone. I hope you are having a greyt week. I have officially started back in my marathon training. I am either going to do the NYC marathon if I get in (it is by lottery) or the Columbus marathon in my home town.

I am going to use a different approach this time. Last time I got really burned out with all the running. I did very little cross training and hardly any strength training. ALL I did was run. I am going to do some speed work this time, strength training at least once a week (hopefully twice) and allow myself some time to cross train. These are all things you are suppose to do anyway. I realize it might mean not running as many actual miles but I think I will benefit from doing some other activities. I guess only time will tell.

The benefits to a run/walk program are numerous. It just might be what your foot needs.

I am sorry about the "crazy" work schedule. I can certainly sympathize. Mine has been crazy since March. It is just now slowing down. Thank goodness. I think I should have a reprieve for about 6 weeks before it gets busy again. It does make this "healthy lifestyle" VERY difficult. I have been struggling myself and am looking for a way to try to get back on track.

I hope you find some sanity to your life soon emoticon

Wow, another crazy week at work. I really didn't do anything in the way of exercise last week. I did make it to my tri class this week (an hour spinning and then some weights). I'm hoping the craziness is over and I can find a routine again.

The only upside to taking a week off is that my foot feels fine now. Now that it doesn't hurt anymore I want to try to start working on my running again. I'm thinking about doing intervals, jog 5 min, walk 1 or 2 minutes. I think this will help me work on my speed and also keep me from hurting myself.

Finished the Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon today in 2:04:22 which is a PR for me! I was super excited as I have not been consistently running since my first full marathon last month and I had no idea how the legs would hold up.

The weather was good. It was cool with temps between 47-54 degrees and winds of 15-19 mph for the entire race. However the sun was shining so it actually turned out to be a beautiful day.

That sounds like it would be a fun little run!

I had a terrible week at work last week. I got completely off track with exercise and eating. This week will be a bit crazy too but at least I know to expect it LOL

I'll be getting back to logging calories and doing boot camp today.

I did the Cinco De Mayo 4 miler last night. It was fun. They severed up some great tequila drinks, chips and salsa as our post race treats (if you were over 21!).

This is the first 4 miler and the first shorter distance that I have done in about 6 months. Since I was training for my first marathon, I have been training for endurance and have not done any speed work. I am definitely slower than I used to be when all I ran were 5K's but I was still pleased with my finishing time of 37:25. The course was almost completely small rolling hills (I usually avoid hills at all cost) and it was really windy here in Ohio yesterday with gusts up to 30 mph. I have definitely decided as I get ready to start training for my second marathon that I am going to start incorporating speed work back into my workouts and HILLS....Ugh

You rock girl. Personally I have always run any new race distance slowly than necessary because I am always worried about not be able to finish. The next 5K you will already KNOW that you can do it and you will kill it! You should be so proud of yourself for finishing but you can add to that because you were able to run the whole thing which you didn't think you could do.

Kudos! emoticon

Did my 5K this weekend. I was pretty slow 52:47 but I did jog all of it. Just very slowly LOL

Actually that is the farthest I've ever gone without walking. Ever.

I think I could have gone faster but I was worried about getting too tired. I was still feeling fine when I got to the finish. My feet hurt today still but I did a lot of walking around this weekend in addition to the run.

Also my husband did his first half and with little to no training finished in 2:20. He has run in the past but doesn't run regularly now. I think he did 2 runs in the last month.

I really liked the event and wouldn't mind doing it again. I'd never been to Cincinnati and I really liked it. I loved all of the art deco architecture downtown.

I think my problem the other day was that I ran home from work,. had some water and a cheese stick and then went running with almost no down time.

I don't know what will be available for breakfast at our hotel but I'm going to bring some granola bars as a back up.

Make sure to let us know how you do. Good luck to you. You will do great.

As far as eating before a race, I do recommended it but it should not be RIGHT before. Usually one hour before is a good rule of thumb. Also they say try to stay away from caffeine, dairy and fiber before a run as they can cause havoc with the stomach. I often eat a half a bagel with either peanut butter or Nutella and/or granola bars (it just depends on how long the race is). They also say a fruit smoothie is good although I have never tried that.

I've got my 5K this weekend. I probably won't be able to run the whole thing but I'm hoping to limit my walking to about 5 minutes.

Went for a run around the neighborhood last week and did 1.3 miles non-stop. Then I started regretting eating right before and decided to head home. I was getting tired but I think I could have made it to the 2 mile mark if I hadn't started to feel bad.

I've had a crazy few weeks and I've been slacking on my training. But I'm hoping to get back on track this week.

Congratulations Molly! You are officially a Marathoner! I'm so proud of you. I don't care what your time was, that is a LONG way to go. A lot of people I have talked to had to walk for a while on their first marathon, so extra kudos to you for running the entire time. I can't imagine going for 26.2 miles... HIGH FIVE! emoticon

I did my first marathon today so obviously I PR'd as well. I was not really happy with my time as it was a lot slow than what I have trained at but I finished in 5:16:41. It was a hard course, only one big hill but it was run on the Kokosing Gap Trail. It is a new marathon (3rd year) and they capped the field at 300 for the Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon relay. There were only 62 of us that did the full marathon. It was an awful lonely course with little spectator support which I knew was going to be the case when I signed up. What I didn't realize is how much I would need support.

My plan was to start out slow and see how I felt at the half. If I felt good then I was going to pick up the pace. Although I felt good at the half (probably because I was going so slow), my feet were just starting to hurt so I decided to continue the slower pace. Thank goodness. I had not one extra ounce of energy at the end so I will take the slow time because it allowed me to finish. I ran the whole thing expect for when I stopped at the aid stations.

I figure I have the rest of my life to work on a new PR. Right now I am just relishing in the fact that I finished

I'm eating better (less junk food and wrong foods), drinking more water, exercising, and STARTED eliminating my night time food raids. Maybe now I can BEGIN losing weight??? hehe! Why can't all months be short like February? Although when I gave up fast food for that month, it seemed like the longest month of my life.

The weather was good. It was suppose to be partly to mostly cloudy. It ended up being mostly sunny and a little warmer than forecasted and because of this, I was a little overdressed and I had not bothered to bring my sunglasses or visor but who cares...the rain held off emoticon

As far as how the run went. I think it had the opposite effect that it should have. It did not make me feel prepared. Instead I came home and cried to Jim about how I had no idea how I would find the strength (both mental and physical) to run those last 4.2 miles. One of my teammates tried to remind me that I was coming off of my highest mileage week and that would automatically make my legs tired. He said it would be different race day because I will have dramatically cut down on my weekly mileage for the two weeks prior. I hope he is right.

I meant to ask, how did your 22 mile run go? Did the weather stay good for you?

Ugh! I missed my vitamins yesterday. I had made that my March goal and was doing such a good job remembering to take them everyday. I only had 2 days to go and I would have been able to say that I meet my goal and now....nothing!

Give yourself permission to walk if you need to. You will be amazed how much pressure that takes off of you. Without the pressure, you will be be amazed at how hard you are able to push yourself. Besides there is NOTHING wrong with walking. My tip for if you have to walk is to walk at a brisk enough pace that you keep your heart rate up. Don't let your heart rate drop too much. If you keep your heart rate up, there are actually advantages to walking...it helps release lactic acid build up which will improve your running once you resume.

Also don't underestimate the adrenaline rush you will get from being around others racers. It helps to push you on. Remember the most important thing is to just keep moving (unless you feel your have injured yourself).

Hope your trip out of town was good and we are glad you are back!

It is so good to hear about all of you runners, there might be hope for me yet LOL

Crazy last couple of weeks. We were getting our hosue ready to sell and then had to go out of town for a few days at the last minute. I've only been to the gym three times in the last 2 weeks. This week I'm getting back on track though.

I'm starting have doubts if I can do my 5K without walking though. It is only 5 weeks away and I can barely run a mile without stopping. I guess I'll just keep training and do what I can come race day. Regardless I'll be running more of it than I would have a couple of months ago :-)

I have a 22 mile run tomorrow. This will be my longest run. I start tapering after Saturday.

I watch that documentary about a month ago. It is fantastic. Although I must say it was a little terrifying knowing that is going to be me. I can't believe a year ago, I had not even started running yet. And don't worry you will be at 4 miles before you know it. Think where you were not so long ago.

I also want to see the documentary Running the Sahara but it is not available on Netflix yet. If you haven't heard of it, you can read about it on line. Pretty amazing.

Do you have your 20 mile run tomorrow? EEK! Of course, anything over 4 miles seems forever to me... I can still imagine myself running 4 miles lol. Have you seen the movie Spirit of the Marathon? I just watched it (from Netflix) and it was SO awesome! It made me want to go out and train for a marathon... very inspiring!

I think having your group is a good thing. I wish you all the luck for your run tomorrow (and I'll hope that the weather stays good for you!).

No time for your dog to poop when you keep em' running...at least so far that has been the theme. But like I said, I have only run with her for a mile or so.

Congrats on the distance. You are officially a 5Ker. Better get your racin' shoes on. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you run. There is nothing like the feeling on race day. That is really the only reason that I run. I am not necessarily sure that I actually enjoy the day in and day out act of running but I love to race. I guess I can't do the latter without the daily grind.

Wish me luck on my run tomorrow. I am a little freaked out. Especially since they are calling for T-storms in the morning. If I bail on my group run however that would mean I would be stuck putting in all those miles by myself on Sunday and I am not sure mentally I could handle that. I know I need to prepare myself as the marathon that I am entering is VERY small and most likely I will be running with no one else around me. But for now, I WANT and NEED my group.

HAHA! I cannot take my houndie running with me. He is lazy, even by greyhound standards. I take him on 1.5-2 mile walks and by the last half a mile I have to drag him home.. and that's just walking! One day I'll push it and end up having to carry him home, and I don't think I can carry 80 pounds of dead weight by myself! I'd like to run with a dog, but having to carry poop bags and mind the leash and everything seems like it would be too big of a hassle, especially right now when I'm trying to train myself to run a decent distance without stopping or walking.

Speaking of running a decent distance, I ran my longest distance yet, 3.15 miles! Now I finally feel like a runner because I'm actually able to run a "real" distance! It was SO awesome! I'm so glad I got into it! It's amazing to just throw on your shoes and hit the road.

Thanks, I am feeling better. I have been able to run all week without any headaches. I am pretty sure I had a migraine over the weekend even though I have never had one before (at least that is what people at work are telling me).

It is rainy here today and I am bummed because it doesn't look like I will be able to do my run outside today unless I can somehow squeeze it in between storms. I keep checking the radar. Congrats on your run. Slow is not a bad thing...that helps build endurance. Are you taking your greyhound running with you? I have only run with Sitka a few times and it was never very far. I actually think she would be a greyt running partner. Maybe I will have to work on that!

Glad you checked in with us! Keep it up. You are making fantastic progress.

Molly, I hope you're feeling better!

I'm checking in today, partly because I haven't in a while, partly because I need to check in somewhere because the cat and dog don't really care!

I'm off the next two days so I hope I can get some decent running in. I went out this morning and did another 2.5 mile run, which was really hard, but I finished. It's a good feeling knowing that I can do something that quite a few people can't, even though I'm slow. No worries! It's chilly today, so I don't think I'll go to the dog park, but I think I have overworked my greyhound! Last week I just about ran him into the ground by taking him out so much! emoticon

Well I ended up with the worst headache of my life last night. Thought I was going to have to have my hubby take me to the ER for pain meds. Finally subsided sometime in the middle of the night. I have had a "headache hangover" all day today. I decided to skip my group run today because I was very tight through the neck and shoulders and it felt like my headache could start again at any minute.

Headache never came so overall I was having a pretty good day however while doing my second to last set of push ups this evening, I got that same headache again. It stopped me dead in my tracks. It is not as severe but it definitely is not something I want to deal with for any long period of time. I hope I will be able to sleep it off. I need to try and get outside and run some tomorrow to make up some of the miles I missed today. This coming week is suppose to be my toughest week of training so all this could not be happening at a worse time.

Keep you fingers crossed for me.

EVERYONE at my work is sick. My marathon is 4 weeks from Sunday. I have one more hard week coming up which starts on Monday and ends with a 22 mile run on Saturday. As I sit here typing this, I have a terrible headache, I am congested and my left ear is feeling very full. I hope this is all in my head. There could not be a worse time for me to get sick than right now. This would completely throw off my training.

Ugh.........................

Greyt job on everyone's runs this weekend. Mine also went well. I did my first 20 miler and finished in 3:35. I have one more big run of 22 miles in two weeks and then my marathon in 5 weeks. All of my other runs will be shorter at 8-12 miles.

There is a difference in running outside verse the treadmill. I like the treadmill for when I am starting to get tired because it keeps you on pace and doesn't let you wimp out (unless you manually decrease your speed) but I like the feel of the open road and I tend to run faster when I am outside.

As far as the time for your race...I always wear my own stop watch when I run so that I can start/stop it when I cross the starting and finishing lines. I hate relying on the official clock at the finish because it is always higher than what I really ran because I typically start closer to the back of the pack. It can kind of mess with your head especially if you thought you did really well and then you see a time that is not so hot. When I did my first half marathon by the time I got to the start line, the race had been started for almost 6 1/2 minutes. You did a great job and should be proud of yourself. It is always nice to beat the time you set in your head that you wanted to finish in.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Good job on your run!

I just finished my first outside run. It was chilly (around 40F), but I did it! I actually ran faster than I was going on the treadmill, so I feel really good about my time. I'll sneak a couple walks with the dog in today since it's going to be beautiful out! Hope everyone has a greyt day!

The run went well on Saturday. It was really crowded, not sure how many people but the highest number I saw was in the 11K range.

My official finishing time for the 5 miles was 1:26, however they started the clock when the competitive runners started and then delayed everyone else. We ran past the finish right after we started and it was already at 20 minutes and we hadn't even gone a mile.

Still I figured 1:30 would be the worst case scenario for me and I did better than that so I'm happy with my result. I did a combo of jogging and walking and probably managed to jog about half of it.

Well good luck this weekend. I hope you feel better and that your ankle stays healthy. I often get a "tweaky" feeling in my ankle but like you it seems to clear when running. Not sure what is up with that.

Make sure to let us know how everything goes for you.

Yeah, this is my third one this winter. Normally I might get 2 or 3 colds in a whole year so this is a bit odd for me.

It hasn't quite been a week since this one started so I think I'm still in the worst of it. Thankfully the other people I share my cubes with aren't here much so I don't have to worry too much about contaminating my co-workers LOL
