One of the things I do is make a list of everything that needs to be done around the house and yard. Cleaning, organizing and also some things I like to do like walking, reading a magazne or shopping. Then when I have a really bad craving and feel a binge coming on I pick one and try to put my mind on that. It usually works and the the craving will pass while my mind is focused on the task at hand. Then I check off on the list what I did and move to something else the next time! Hey, what ever works!

Managing your feelings is working through emotions without resorting to overeating. Making yourself aware of the feelings that trigger comfort eating for you will allow you to be better able to find healthier ways to handle them.

Managing your feelings means:
Making yourself aware of the emotions that send you straight to the fridge... sadness, insecurity, anger, boredom, hurt, frustration, loneliness ... even happiness and excitement.
Understanding that when you eat for emotional reasons, your intentions are positive. You're just trying to prolong good feelings or feel better.
Finding positive ways to fulfill those positive intentions (instead of eating).

It's not unusual for people to eat when they're bored, sad, lonely, angry, etc. Most people do it once in awhile, but for some of us, emotional eating becomes a habit. When food becomes the only cure, it becomes difficult to make smart choices. When emotions take over, we set our best efforts aside. Afterward, we feel depressed about falling off the wagon... and head back to the fridge. It's a scary cycle --- a cycle we can break by making it a habit to manage our feelings in more positive ways.

Managing your feelings is a helpful habit because:
Research has found a direct connection between fewer episodes of emotional eating and weight loss success.
When you understand that you eat emotionally and start to recognize which emotions make you overeat, you have the advantage of a warning. When you feel the trigger emotion, you know what to expect and can take positive action. You can prepare to handle those emotions in healthier ways.
This helps you understand what "comfort food" really means. You eat comfort food to feel better, but do comfort foods REALLY make you feel better?

What do you do to draw yourself away from food? How do you manage your feelings?
